Holy God, Mudhoney is still around? Why don't I know this, Piece of Cake was one of the best albums I've ever heard, very underrated rock.
"Suck you dry" makes me wish I had an instant pit button.

Yep, and the new one is pretty good. I won't call it a classic, or anything silly like that, but if you like Mudhoney you should enjoy it.
I was just as shocked two weeks ago when I discovered Firewater had a new one.

I've been keeping tabs on the Firewater, Todd A took off to the middle and far east for a few years. He recorded a lot of local musicians and used the tracks for the new songs in this CD.
I don't usually fawn over bands like this but Firewater is really something special.

That's cool - I've also been a fan since their first album but hadn't really followed what they were currently up to until I saw the new one listed on a new release list.

On the way home from work I put the mp3 player on shuffle. Among the artists I'll hear are:
Clash, Squeeze, The Cure, Neil Diamond (pre-1976), Let's Active, Johnny Cash, Delbert McClinton, Warren Zevon, Hungry For What, John Denver, Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, The Smiths, Billy Bragg, Housemartins, Blues Brothers, Death Cab For Cutie, Oasis, Flogging Molly, Big Audio Dynamite, Dubliners, Pogues, Metallica, Enter The Haggis, Public Image Limited, Sleeves, Howard Jones, Yael Naim, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, U2, Van Morrison, Beatles, Slade, Dwight Yokum, Joe Strummer (all incarnations) & Emerson, Lake and Palmer...
Needless to say, I can't stick to one genre of music.

Never heard of the Beta Band before they played Dry the Rain on the show the other day. Downloaded their best of album, and have been listening to that lately. I was looking for a more psychadelic sound, I think they have it, but it wasn't showcased very well on their "best of" album of course.

Everybody loves Fish Heads ... I actually first heard it as the finale of someone's Masters' conducting recital at Westminister Choir College (it's now called the College of Music of Rider University or something like that) ... I thought it was great.
And it stuck in my head for weeks. (Damn you Billy Mumy!)
Anyway, to contribute to the discussion ... I have been switching between regular radio and my copies of Turbo Ocho http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51WBYn-SW7L._SL500_AA240_.jpg and Americano http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41K6BW0YK1L._SL500_AA240_.jpg by Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers (http://www.azpeacemakers.com/). It's so upbeat, even Newark traffic backup can't get me down for long.
Oh, and on Saturday, I was playing my Mozart for Your Mind CD.

The first Teenage Cool Kids albums, Queer Salutations
A little fuzzy, a little surfy, a little garagey, sometimes the singer sounds like Joe Jack Talcum. Really good, and it came out in Texas 3 or 4 years ago, and if it were more fuzzy it could be Wavves, if it were flatter it could be Vivian Girls. You could tweak this into a lot of bands that are hitting right now. I think it's funny how people get this concept of hipness and innovation when you can always look back and find something like this, which didn't happen in the hot contemporary scene, and isn't lauded as a watershed for where music is now. It was just good and in a bubble. Kiss my ass, Brooklyn.

I am all about the new Oh Sees record 'Warm Slime' and am desperately searching NYC for a copy of the White Mystery s/t LP. It's an exceptional record that no one is stocking!
Also feeling, the new MGMT (the Kinks are a good band, guys), the Dum Dum Girls 'I Will Be', Madlib's '420 Chalice All-Stars', and, Charles Albright's 'I'm Happy I'm a Genius'.

I've had this album for over a year but never listened to it much. But I heard it again on shuffle and all the sudden became addicted to it. A lot of my favorite albums are like that. Anyway, it's an oscillation between skate punk and stoner metal built on a skeleton of hardcore. Technical, groove-oriented, crushing, earnest.
The Roots new CD, How I Got Over, came out today. The first half is kind of low key and jazzy, but they have NEVER been as good as they are in the last half of this album. They have not produced 2 songs as good as How I Got Over and The Fire. I saw them perform earlier this year and they did The Fire and for a first for The Roots I think the album version is better. John Legend adds so much.

Screaming Females.
When I was looking at twitters for clues why R&F were off the other day I saw GVACs twitter asking about new, good punk bands. Thats a really tricky question because time is kindof arbitrary when promotion is primarily through word of mouth, and what is punk now anyway? The lines are super blurry and its always been a subversive style. I suspect he meant punk bands that were straight ahead, in the old style. Screaming Females are a good band for that. They're melodic but rough kindof like the buzzcocks. And while I cant say that Marissa Paternoster sounds like this person or that person, she does have a very classic voice. I would have no trouble believing she wasn't contemporary.

Arcade Fire, over and over again. I never listened to them, heard their new single, so I checked out their newest album. It's fantastic, but Funeral is amazing.
I do find it weird that the 2nd to last song on both albums is the best song on both.
Ok, I need some help with this one. I HATED Funeral (and believe me I realize I'm in the minority with this one), it was whiny and it dragged on seemingly forever. But I desperately want to give these guys another shot. I downloaded Suburbs (the single) and I kind of like it. Is it worth buying the whole album? I honestly don't want to get burned again, and if I do I swear I'll make it my mission that these hipsters never put out another album again.

They did, but also lately there has been some questionable things going on to really pad total album sales, like selling digital versions of the album before the street date and online deals where you can download the record really cheaply in the first week. The quantity of albums sold goes up, but them having the number one record in the country isn't the same feat it used to be.

The new 36 crazyfists is pretty good. Even though it's straight up metalcore, it's still better than most of whats out there. I'm kinda disappointed with the new Miss May I. It's pretty generic. I just downloaded Bush's sixteen stone and I'm pretty excited to get into that. I've heard nothing but amazing things about that album.

Doesn't hipster mean popular?
Nope - a hipster prefers music no one but the few who are hip enough to live near enough to the scene to hear. If you heard the band anywhere but in a dank subterranean bar, chances are it isn't hip.
If you're wearing clothes you didn't make out of some older, dirty clothes OR if those clothes aren't in some way ironic (D.A.R.E. shirts, old man golf pants, Class of '73 sweaters), good chance you're not a hipster.
Beards are essential, a bad mustache is better - if you twist the ends with wax, you score the maximum points possible in the facial hair.
Arcade Fire:
Buys very fashionable outfits - no points.
Wears no facial hair between all of them - no points.
Can be heard on the radio, and on movie soundtracks - no points.
Shirts buttoned to neck, as opposed to an open, stretched oout v-neck tee shirt - zero points.
No obvious references to the 70's or 80's in their attire - zero points.
Record available in formats other then Vinyl - zero points.
Not even close to hipsterism.
I hope this helps.

Just an absolutely fantastic guitar player and blues musician. And the guy grew up in Sweden, no less!

Ok, just loaded up the CD changer in my car to prepare for these guys:
Here Come the Mummies (http://www.herecomethemummies.com)
(You can download 8 free songs on their website, btw...)
Terrific funk band, out of Nashville of all places, that puts on a great stage show. Rumor has it the players are all contracted, major-label musicians who have to protect their identities- thus, the Mummies getup.
I'll be seeing them Saturday in NYC at Irving Plaza, but they'll be in Falls Church on Thursday, Boston on Friday, and Mohegan Sun on Sunday.

Also, in response to "Here Come the Mummies"... I wonder were you aware of the other Mummies band? The Mummies.

Yes, I had heard of The Mummies, but I don't think I knew they did the costume gimmick as well. Awesome!

Before his breakthrough, Vandross was part of a singing quintet in the late ’70s, consisting former Shades of Jade members Anthony Hinton and Diane Sumler, Theresa V. Reed, and Christine Wiltshire, also called Luther, signed to Cotillion Records. Although the singles “It’s Good for the Soul”, “Funky Music (Is a Part of Me)”, and “The Second Time Around” were relatively successful, their two albums, the self-titled Luther (1976) and This Close to You (1977), didn’t sell enough to make the charts. Vandross bought back the rights to these albums after the record label dropped the group, preventing their later re-release.

You can stream Jolie Holland's new album until it comes out next week. I like it, her dynamic with her band is better on this one. She seems to have settled into the folky rock area when her first two records were a really ecclectic mish mash. Good songwriting though.
Albums are too damn short these days.
