View Full Version : What Do You Believe?

Poison Ivy

Well since I whored myself out this morning and posted over 10 times to hit 99 I figured I'd use post 100 and my transition into Pinellis Park Pervert to start some kind of discussion so.....

Fate...Do you believe there is one true soulmate out there for everyone?

[obsure movie reference] Do you really think there is only one perfect mate? And if there is, then how can you be certain to find them? And if you do find them are they really the one for you or do you only think they are? Then what happens if the person you're supposed to be with never appears or she does but you're too distracted to notice? Or let's say God puts two people on Earth and they are lucky enough to find one another but one of them gets hit by lightning. Well then what? Is that it? Or perchance you meet someone new and marry all over again? Is that the lady you're supposed to be with or was it the first? And if so when the two of them are walking side by side were they both the one for you and you just happened to meet the first one first, or was the second one supposed to be first? And is everything just chance or are some things meant to be?[/obsure movie reference]

I don't believe in the meant to be theories and the there everyone has another half out there somewhere. I feel that there is potential for any couple to be great as long as the timing is right. Any two people could be perfect for one another but if the timing is bad it will never work out for them.
So what are your thoughts?

Can't place the movie you quote, but it sounds like something a John Cusack character might say.

No, I don't believe in soulmates, in the most literal sense, but I have found that fate does sometimes come into play.

Some might be tempted to write it off as simply being in the right place at the right time, and maybe they're right more times than not, but every once in a while you meet someone and WHAM... it's as if right then, right there, you two own that moment.

There you are, living your lives, each traveling down your own road, and suddenly you intersect, and, for however fleeting the moment may be, you get that feeling that this was almost meant to happen.

I think it's our choice whose soul we eventualy decide to mate with, but perhaps this is God's way of playing matchmaker, setting us up on blind date after blind date until one clicks.... or maybe I've just seen "When Harry Met Sally" one too many times ;-)

The movie was "Ever After" I believe.

Anyway, the only thing I DO know, is that I DON'T know. I would like to believe in fate, or a soulmate. That would be incredibly romantic. But who's to say that mate would not only just happen to live fairly close to you so you could find them, but what if they weren't even from this era? What if your mate was born in the 1600's? What if they do live during this time, but she's a whore in Bangladesh or a jizz mopper in a peep show palace? Who the hell knows? I know that I don't. But I wish it were like that. It would be nice.

I don't believe in soulmates because of the 50% chance of divorce when someone gets married these days. If you're lucky enough to meet a person that'll be everything you've wanted, then you're lucky, period.

Soulmates may exist, rarely if ever, but they aren't handing them out like oranges at a blood drive.

Find a person who said they "found their soulmate" 15-20 years ago, and I'll bet they've changed their mind.

I believe that everyone has a soulmate, but only those who are more fortunate get to find theirs. By more fortunate I mean in life, not financially or anything.

IT'S TIME TO PLAY THE GAME-AHHH!

i believe in a princess.
and she lives far far away.
like not even in the united states.
she's got gold hair, a gold heart and she loves john lennon.
she use to sing songs by the beatles on the beach. the problem was, everybody kept trying to rescue the princess.
and its hard to compete with a bunch of kings and queens when your just a joker.
i was lucky enuff to find my soul mate and spend the summer with her.

the end

we get it...things are magical. - ron

Well, Poison Ivy, as you know I don't believe that there are souls, so "soulmate" seems to me to be a misnomer.

I also find the idea of "fate" to be quite disturbing. It's a concept that allows people to rationalize ill-fortune and missed opportunities on destiny. It encourages feelings of inertia rather than competence. We are responsible for our own destiny.

In any event, regarding the intent of your question, I agree that any two people have potential to be a great couple and that you can be happy with different people.

However, it's a potential and the potential is not always explored or expressed. For example a person who dates, falls in love and marries will (hopefully) no longer be interested in pursuing a relationship of this type with someone else.

If however, these same people had never met, they could each have married others, and have been very happy together.

You've heard the expression that opposites attract. For some people this is the case (as in my wife and I). Other people tend to find happiness with people who are very similar to them.

And Chet, I met my wife about 18 years ago. I love her more than ever.
