View Full Version : Bagels: Toasted Or Not?
As someone who grew up with Lender's Bagels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lender's_Bagels), I never ate them toasted -- and never saw them eaten toasted. Now it seems like everyone (down here anyway) toasts their bagels.
Since the majority of folks are from the NY/NJ area, what is the proper bagel ettiquette? Or, what is your personal preference?

I like them either untoasted or lightly toasted with butter or cream cheese. I don't think there is a standard way to eat them.

Fresh bagels - no way.
Frozen or a few days old - yes
I remember going into a bagel place (I think in Northern Va.) where they had a sign stating that they do not toast bagels.

good bagel places will not toast fresh bagels because they tend to just burn.

I prefer untoasted. I feel that by cutting a bagel in half, and toasting it that you lose the doughy and chewie portion of the bagel, and it dries it out.

It really depends on my mood and the situation.
I generally eat Bagels un-toasted because it is faster - grab a bagel on the way out of the door and eat it on the way to work.
However, I also enjoy a nicely toasted bagel every now and then - especially if I eat it with cream cheese or "regular" cheese.
You ate frozen bagels untoasted?
They weren't frozen. They were made fresh in one of the several Lender's Bakeries/Restaurants that used to be all around the greater New Haven area.

Toasting a day old bagel is perfectly acceptable.
Only a savage would even think of toasting a fresh one or purchasing Lender's.
Some of you truly disgust me.

It depends
Panera Cinnamon crunch would just burn the cinnamon in the toaster so those are untoasted, same with Chocolate Chip
Panera French Toast, Blueberry or others toast away

Size has a lot to do with it. I prefer untoasted for hand-sized normal bagel size. Mini-bagels I prefer to be toasted. Specially bagel bites.

I'd never buy a frozen bagel. That would be like buying pot roast without vegetables!
Still, Lender's frozen bagels are better than the dinner rolls they call "bagels" down here.

toasting a fresh bagel seems pointless. its like how great steak places wont give you A1, enjoy the simple greatness of it.
but few places, and almost none in the city, actually have fresh bagels so then ill get that som'bitch toasted to shit.

I think the difference is what is being put on it.
I would never ever ever toast a fresh bagel and put cream cheese on it. I can't even think of anything more nauseating than the smell, texture and taste of that.
But if im going to use butter than the odds of my toasting a bagel are higher because that just tastes yummy.

it depends on the bagel. Frozen bagel i assumed everyone toasted. hard to eat without doing so, or without alot of patience.

Here in the boondocks there is no such thing as a FRESH bagel. If I travel someplace that has fresh bagels, I'll have it untoasted with some type of cream cheese or as a sandwich.
The places that I frequent near home or work get their bagels delivered overnight. I don't consider them fresh so toasting them is the only way I will get them. The toppings I have on them rotates between butter, cream cheese, and peanut butter.

I agree, it's a case-by-case type of thing. Bagels can be enjoyable in either form depending on the circumstances. Not that I can claim any authority on the subject. I'm from the fucking Midwest and all we have is the stuff the grocery store baked that day.
Although. I do still enjoy those, both toasted and untoasted.
I can't wait to come to NY this August! My boyfriend asked, what do you want to do in New York? And I told him I wanted to go to Yonah Schimmel's and try a knish. I don't think food adventuring was what he had in mind.

There is a bagel place by me called "HOT BAGELS" and no matter when you go, the bagels are not even remotely warm, and it pisses me off. I love a nice hot from the oven bagel. I have eaten and enjoyed them either way, but a plain bagel toasted with butter is really nice. I also love baileys.

I have tried to eat a bagel that was untoasted, but it is so chewey it is like bubble gum. Toasted is the only way to go, with cream cheese. It should be illegal to serve them untaosted.
