only advice on the route is drop down to i-70 in lincoln nebraska, unless you wish to visit Chicago or Cleveland, I70 is much smoother going.

1. Bunny Ranch
2. Great Salt Lake
3. Matthew Shepard Memorial Fence in Laramie Wy
4. There are some interesting spots along the old Oregon Trail in Nebraska, you can actually see the trail where the wagons cut into the ground.

i went to AAA travel center and planned whole trip back in 1996. best time ever. had hotels set up every 500 miles or so. all the tour books highlighted with cool spots.

well i think all the way from nevada to Iowa are 75mph states, so you should be able to do 750 miles or so in a day.

One pointer is to make it an adventure by eating and staying at places that you dont recognize, no chains...unless you are black or flamboyantly gay, you will have no problems walking into any restaurant.

If possible, catch the Badlands. Also if possible, check out the Garden of the Gods outside of Colorado Springs.

What a great idea for you and your buddy. Go on that road trip and have a great time!

Sure you're good looking, but what does that have to do with going north?

Nice catch.

I can get you to Texas and back but that's it. As far as I'm concerned once you get out of CFS range it's not even worth seeing.

I did a cross country / homeless thing for a while after college. Definitely see the black hills / badlands. Bring lots of music and pot. There is not a lot to look at in the middle of the country, but it is beautiful. I'd say take your time. Take a few weeks if you can. I found that you can only drive for about four hours before it gets boring, and the entire day is lost on the road.

Have fun

If you have some time on your hands I suggest San Fran to Denver, up to Montana and over through South Dakota. That was the trip I had planned when I was moving out to NY but we ended up shipping everything instead.

So bottom line...can I live my dreams through you?

yes you can but we might add a trip to vagas and the canyon in there just because we might not get another chance to take a trip like this

I've taken at least 10 trips out West with my summers off. Plan on at least one thing going wrong and meeting at least one unforgetable character

I'm driving out to Oregon to see Yonder Mountain String Band in July at the Northwest String Summit

From SF heading directly east, you could take 50, go through Tahoe/Reno and then "The loneliest road in America" across Nevada, where you can decide to go south to Vegas or North towards Yellowstone/Black Hills when you get to Utah

Get through Utah as soon as possible. Mormons live there.

i gotta stress the AAA factor, and pay for the AAAplus because they have a nice fringe called "trip interruption" where you are covered for hotel and food (or rental car) while car is repaired. getting towed off an interstate is very exspensive without AAA.

grand canyon (stay in williams, AZ. it is so close) is amazing and the pot suggestion can't hurt there.

badlands were beautiful, but not much else around. i was way into the "painted desert and petrified forest which is fairly close to canyon. (and free with canyon reciept within 7 days)

stay out of texas and oklahoma because those states were like a different country to me. i couldn't understand a word they spoke and all the cops want to search your shit. i was asked if i listen to jungle music while they went through our luggage  fuck those people.

Butte Montana is an interesting day trip. Nice restaurants and a decent couple of tours.
Wall Drug, so touristy..you have to stop
Badlands awesome!!!
Mt Rushmore.
Yellowstone..you can see wolves about that time of year on a tour.
RV Hall of Fame
Just a few I drove from NJ to Mt along 80/90...get fireworks in Mt
Just watch out for the reststop on the Wyoming/Montana boarder..It is run by Native americans who will rob your car while you are getting some food.
The Northern route is good scenery..lots of antelope, some elk and moose. If you are lucky, you might see a heard of big horn Sheep that route too.

Cleveland
Louisville
Memphis
New Orleans
Dallas
Amarillo
Flagstaff
Las Vegas
Los Angeles

Best time of my life. America is the shit.

Did it in '94 in August alone and again in '95 with 2 friends.

I had more fun alone. Got into adventures and whatnot.

Peed in a 2 liter
Met up with hippies beating drums and being all peace-like in a rest stop in Texas.
Gave a ride to a guy travelling with Dead heads in Arizona for like 130 miles - he slept the whole way.
I'll never forget listening to a band called "Lucy's Fur Coat" (short for Lucifer :devil2:) on a small station in Ohio and thinking -there's a little known band whose song I dig.
Got caught up with a military convoy in Arizona carrying and gaurding a very large missle (that was something I don't see often)
Saw the Grand Canyon (awesome)
Went through Indian Reservations.
Did little Diners in the midwest... being served by people who looked like they've been as far as the corner store in their whole 45 years.
Saw 4 corners, which is really only impressive on a map - and for ESD for other reasons... although I may have done the same thing for the same reasons come to think of it.
I'll never forget driving in pitch blackness to the Hot Rocks albums - Gimmer Shelter in the dead of night in the middle of nowhere.
Smoked a lot!:smoke:
One tip: get giant old man sunglasses for when you're in the heartland at sundown travelling west. The sun is blinding.
Saw amber waves of grain.

America is awesome and bizarre - love it.

Bring gallon jugs of water, you can crash in rest stops if you're just trying to get to the coast quickly. Check the spare tires, update your cell tower coverage regularly, listen to R/F noon to three, road hazard kit, first aid kit, do a basic tune up before you leave... if you have a good mechanic - ask to have the car "checked over" before you leave. They'll do all the basics and point out anything that might leave you stranded:help:.

I've long since settled down... holy shit my life consists of very routine travel now with occasional vacations...

Talk with everyone and HAVE FUN!!!!

in 2002, my chick and I did the following stops

New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Akron (football HOF), Columbus, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Fargo, Billings, Boise, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego (sister lives there), Phoenix, Flagstaff, Las Vegas, Salt lake City, Denver, Kansas City, st Louis, Memphis, Nashville, Charlotte, Richmond, York, Home - Took us 2 months...best vacation of our lives

we saw baseball games in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Minneapolis (that trash bag roof is insane), seattle, san diego, st louis

i had a good old fashion CB, and I could kill hours while she slept just talking shit with truckers, they know all the good places to eat on the road, get away from the shit food at the exits and wonder a bit, those are the best places to eat

nothing like an american car ride

The Badlands in South Dakota are awesome. Try to plan at least a day to hike around. If you can avoid the real hot months it would be worth it. We took a small hike in the badlands and "we'd like to die". Another great place in South Dakota is Custer State Park. They have buffalo there, which I guess is not a big deal if you have seen them before, but if you haven't seen a buffalo herd close (but don't be a dumbass and get too close) then you are truly missing out.

The Rocky Mountains are also really cool.
