Hello,
I am going to be visiting Philly next week for a few days. I know people on the board are from Philly. Just wanted to know a few things:
Best place for a cheese steak
Best place to go for a nice dinner
What area we should stay out of
Want to go see the Link..how is that area? Will be driving unless my car dies before then.
Any advise or tips as to were to go let me know.
We are staying at a hotel on walnut street and going to see a show at a place on Avenue of the Arts, not sure, my wife booked everything.
Thanks

Best place for a cheese steak
It's a little out of the way from Center City (about a half hour drive), but Dalessando's (http://philadelphia.citysearch.com/profile/8973883/philadelphia_pa/dalessando_s_steak_and_hoagies.html) is the best. However, since you're downtown, you might also try Jim's Steaks (http://philadelphia.citysearch.com/profile/8991032/philadelphia_pa/jim_s_steaks.html) on South Street. Also very good.
Best place to go for a nice dinner
I ate at Fogo de Chão (http://www.zagat.com/verticals/PropertyDetails.aspx?VID=8&R=112882)just a couple weeks ago and have been raving about it ever since. Brazilian BBQ.
Also in the area is McGillin's Ale House (http://philadelphia.citysearch.com/profile/8959684), Philadelphia's oldest bar, which I'd recommend for a pint.
What area we should stay out of
If you're downtown, you'll be fine. There are some shady neighborhoods west and north of Center City, but there is nothing there you would be going to see on such a short trip anyway.
Lincoln Field is easy to get to from downtown - just follow Broad Street south all the way down, however there is nothing down there. You can do a drive by of the stadium, but there is only some small neighborhoods and industrial parks surrounding it.
For a freaky time, I'd recommend the Mutter Museum. (http://www.collphyphil.org/mutter.asp)

I went to Mutter on Saturday, and all i can say is AWESOME. it was a very cool trip. it takes about 1.5 hours while you are in there, and it is 12 bucks to get it, which i thought was pretty cheap. it is def a must see. and right around the corner from Mutters is an art gallery with some nice stuff for cheap

When I went to Drexel we went to the Mutter for a class trip, actually this was all we did for this one class was go on trips throughout Philly but this was the first place we went to. It was AWESOME! I never ever would have went there myself otherwise! You have to check it out, its a must see!
Also, not sure if you have kids or not, but the Please Touch Museum is a cool place as well.

If you find yourself near Cuba Libre for dinner, do it. Amazing Cuban food.
The best cheesesteak in Philly debate will rage on and on. Might as well ask for the best pizza in New York. I'm a Tony Luke's fan myself, but I'm always drunk when I get there, so take that with a grain of salt.
And the only area I truly didn't feel safe was the neighborhoods surrounding Temple. I'm not sure the name of the area, but I didn't like it. It was so bad it made me switch to University of Delaware.
