View Full Version : Lord Of The Rings - Five Years Later - Still hold up?
I've rewatched some parts of these flicks over the past few days.
Still good movies, but now that it's easier to divorce yourself from the hysteria that surrounded these films when they came out, I feel comfortable saying they're solid movies, but not 'all-time great' like people were praising them originally.

About a month or so ago I watched all three in a row and was totally lost in them. They absolutely hold up.... even better with each watching because I pick up new things and some scenes feel like I'm watching for the first time, only because of the extreme length of the trilogy.

I only watch the extended versions now.
And they hold up very well. Has it really been 5 years?

Dunno, but I barely made it through the the first one after it came out. Then again, I have no love for that fantasy stuff.

i haaaaaaaaaaaate fantasy movies (except for star trek) and i refused to see LOTR when they came out. Yech.
This year, having heard a few close friends talk about loving them, i decided to bite the bullet, and i really really loved them...despite hating the hype.
I thought they were beautiful, well done, well acted movies, with great sound and a good story. So my answer is yes, i guess.

I won tickets last week from WJFK (Big O and Dukes show) after being part of one of their segments.
The tickets are to see the first installment of LOTR at Wolf Trap on HD screens. They will have an orchestra and choir performing the sound track live.
It'll be interesting to see how it all blends.
I'll report back on whether or not I think the movie itself holds up.

Although my expectations were pretty low, I have to admit that Lord of the Rings is definitely the best trilogy ever made and the only trilogy that gets better and better after each movie. Other epic trilogies (Godfather, Star Wars, Matrix) pale in comparison based on the fact that they fade away after the first or second movie. In LOTR, the first installment was solid, the second was great and the third was phenomenol. It will stand up forever. The only thing that will sour the series is a poorly executed Hobbit movie, which is still slated for release in 2010.
I hope they release the trilogy in High Def. I'm anxiously waiting for the Blu-Ray release.

You damn right they hold up after several years!!!!!!!!!!!!
Right now, I'm anxiously waiting to see if New Line Cinema will bring the extended versions (The only versions I watch!) into Blu-Ray.

I have no love for that fantasy stuff.
This, coming from the guy who thinks some magical "dancing woman" convinced him it was OK to move from the Northern Virginia/Maryland area to Manhattan, because he can pretty much work from anywhere. Geeze... Talk about "fantasy stuff"!!!

It's this Wednesday and Thursday. You can go to www.wolftrap.org (http://www.wolftrap.org) and look at their calendar.
Last I checked they had seats under the pavillion thingy and lawn seats as well.
At 3 hours starting at 8:30 it's a late night, but should be fun.
