Similar to what they are doing with Captain America now. Bucky, his old sidekick, is the current Captain America. Marvel is pretty adamant right now about not bringing him back anytime soon.

I think this method is a great idea. These superheroes don't last forever, and shouldn't.

The Joker stuff was legitimately scary. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised considering Morrison wrote "Arkham Asylum," but, DAMN.

Jeezuz Christ, Sheepy - you scared the shit out of me... I thought our beloved Adam West was dead ~ BE MORE BAT-CAREFUL!

Joker's outfit looked like the white version of Pinhead's clothes.

It was at least reminiscent of it.

From what I've read, Morrison's run has been all leading up to Batman RIP (ie hints, etc from the get go), and was HUGELY influenced by Batman '60's stories.

This story arc concludes this week. Will Bruce Wayne die? Will he survive and retire? Or will he survive and keep acting as Batman?

From everything I've read about upcoming issues, the answer to the last question appears to be a definite "NO."

Temporary at best

Temporary at best

Most "status quo" changes on the major characters are only temporary. Even Azrael was Batman 10-15 years ago.

Yeah, I don't give a crap if the changes last or not, because they never do. I just enjoy the ride of a Morrison-scripted story and then drop the character when he's gone.

I will sit down when its all out and read it again but as of right now I haven't liked it and I really don't like how anything big and monumentious in the DCU takes forever to come out

Yeah, I'll buy the HC when it comes out in a month or two.

i thought it was temporary, and a lead up to that "whatever happened to bruce wayne" arc that coming out afterwards.

not sure how i feel about cocophony yet either, hit torrents last week.

"Whatever Happened To The Caped Crusader" isn't really an arc. It's a two issue story similar to the story "Whatever Happened To The Man of Tomorrow." If you remember that story, it was about how Superman's "final days." WHTTCC is coming out right after this Batman RIP.

After that story is "The Battle For The Cowl," and DC has been hinting that there are a number of people seeking to become Batman.

But Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow really was the final Superman story. After that came the John Byrne reboot that restarted Superman from scratch and lead into current continuity.

I'm not sure exactly which of my points the above corrects. It was the final Silver Age Superman story, and everything else you say is correct. My point, although maybe not clear, is that Batman RIP really isn't a lead-up to WHTTCC. Rather, WHTTCC is more of an epilogue to the Batman RIP story, and that the arc that follows Batman RIP appears to be The Battle for The Cowl.

Also, I was hinting that maybe WHTTCC will be similar to the "Man of Tomorrow." That story was about Lois Lane telling a reporter about the last days of Superman, but the story showed that Superman wasn't dead, just stripped of his powers and that their infant son had powers.

It will all be ret-conned a few years from now anyway, thats why Im not one that gets upset when the precious continuity gets out of whack

If only there were more fans with that attitude. Remember the shitstorm around the One More Day arc in Amazing Spider-Man? You'd think that Joe Quesada had raped Stan Lee at the San Diego Comic Con.

Some of that was nerds too wrapped up in continuity...but most of it was people pissed as just how shitty a story it was for something so momentous. A literal deal with the devil? That's almost the exact definition of a deus ex machina. I have no problem with not being beholden to continuity, but that was sloppy and stupid, even for comics.

Well, I read Batman RIP, and it's clear that Batman's fate is:

Still unknown -- he could be dead or not. All we know is that he went after the leader of Black Glove by jumping on the guy's helicopter and the chopper blew up.

Then the epilogue says Bats has been gone for six months, and then they have the set-up for the prologue which showed a Batman and Robin saying Batman and Robin will never die.

no body was shown he is not dead, either he went on some sort of spirtual quest or he we underground in order to clear up the shit the Blackglove was going to release about his family and freinds

Maybe Rip Hunter took him back in time ;)
