While everyone is right for the reasons that horses have to be shot for a broken leg, it is not true that they sleep standing up. Cows sleep standing up, and all the more reason to eat them. That's why cow tipping is so popular. Tipping over yummy, delicious cows.

But horses do lay down to sleep. Som emay nap standing up, but not that often. This is the view in my backyard every morning a couple of hours after feeding time.
