These kids as Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac.
I hate nearly EVERY Biography movie made. Actually, just the ones made nowadays. Walk the Line was horrendous, and I didn't make it through Ray. The last one I recall that I liked was the Hurricane with Denzel. Has the formula changed? I really like the way bio movies were skewered in Walk Hard. It seems all they do nowadays is get some current celebrity to play some old celebrity for kitsch. They're rarely ever good. I have a TERRIBLE feeling about the B.I.G. movie. I don't know. Anyone have any faith in an upcoming bio movie?

i have no interest in any music bio pic ... i loved the motorcycle diaries, and i'm really excited in the two upcoming che movies by soderbergh:
The Argentine: On November 26, 1956, Fidel Castro sails to Cuba with eighty rebels. One of those rebels is Ernesto “Che” Guevara, an Argentine doctor who shares a common goal with Fidel Castro - to overthrow the corrupt dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. Che proves indispensable as a fighter, and quickly grasps the art of guerrilla warfare. As he throws himself into the struggle, Che is embraced by his comrades and the Cuban people. This film tracks Che’s rise in the Cuban Revolution, from doctor to commander to revolutionary hero.
Guerrilla: After the Cuban Revolution, Che is at the height of his fame and power. Then he disappears, re-emerging incognito in Bolivia, where he organizes a small group of Cuban comrades and Bolivian recruits to start the great Latin American Revolution. The story of the Bolivian campaign is a tale of tenacity, sacrifice, idealism, and of guerrilla warfare that ultimately fails, bringing Che to his death. Through this story, we come to understand how Che remains a symbol of idealism and heroism that lives in the hearts of people around the world.

The Che movies sound badass due to the involvement of Benicio and Soderbergh. The Bush movie I'm willing to give a shot to because it's Oliver Stone...it'll probably be complete BS historically/politically, but it could still be an amazing movie a la JFK and Nixon. Both of those are basically fiction, but they're two of the best films I've ever seen.
I'm not sure why you're comparing general biopics to music biopics. Music biopics tend to be boring because they all basically follow the same patterns and forumlas. Biopics about historical and political figures tend to be much more unique and varied and epic in the lives and events you're following. Music biopics are pretty much all "they came from nothing, had it all, almost lost everything to drugs and booze, found salvation in love."

American Splendor was a great bio picture. A good mix of acting and actual events. I'm not a comic book guy so I had no idea what to expect going in, but I ended up loving it.

Guess it's hard to sell the ones where after they almost lose everything to drugs and booze, they OD or die in a car crash as a result of drugs and booze.

Wait, wait, dying in the tub is a happy ending? Unless you just hate Jim Morrison and you were making a funny joke. In which case, I get it! I get your funny joke! But if you weren't kidding then I don't understand.
Unrelated note: I too liked Capote.

Quick sidebar: Have you read any of the David Baldacci books that feature a former CIA operative who left the agency and now uses the name Oliver Stone while protesting outside the White House and keeps a log on the activities of politicos?

No sir. But that's because the book snob of me hates all things Baldacci.

I think I might go see that NOTORIOUS movie this weekend. It looks like shit, but I've been watching Notorious BIG stuff all week, and am kind of in the mood now.
It may be worth a couple laughs.

I have weird relationship with biopics.
Every time I leave the theater after a biopic, I say "that's it... never again... I'm done with these."
Then... I hear about another one that's in the works and I get all excited. "Oooh, The James Brown story?? I'm THERE!"
I'd love to see a movie about Jaco Pastorious.
and also Marvin Gaye.

I have little doubt the movie will be horrible, but anything that gets Biggie played on TV is OK by me.

I hope the BIGGIE movie is a cut above.
I've been avoiding the commercials and stuff because I wanna go in cold but, I am HOPING that it's a "real" movie.
Sometimes.... biopics can feel a little made-for-tv but, with BIG there's a chance that it will deliver some grit.
I want the Motley Crue movie to be an NC17 rated festival of sex and drugs. None of this Marky Mark bullshit. I want it to be evil.

I watched the last 15mins of the Edie Sedgwick biopic Factory Girl because I was hoping to catch Sienna Miller naked (success). The movie actually didnt seem too awful though. Was that a good biopic?

Yeah, big time let down. It looks amazing, but like pretty much everything by Corbijn it seems really empty and soulless.
