Mike (or anyone else familiar with Earth science):
Is this video possibly true? Is the idea here that the Earth was physically smaller once than it is now? What would happen to gravity on a smaller Earth? Would a different gravity result in a recordable fossil record?

I watched 80% of top video. I must be missing where he states the earth was physically bigger. Does he say this, and what is his evidence for a bigger earth, besides his tectonic theory?

maybe the solar system is like a big clothes dryer and we're losing earth like we lose lint from clothing... i mean we're spinning all the time and being heated by the sun...

ahhh, i just made that up

Yes, it seems he says that it is physically getting bigger.. But I am doubting it could be anywhere near the degree he seems to imply.

I know over the years, I've certainly put on a little more weight.

what i don't get is, if this all happened up to 2 billion years ago, how did he film it?

It was orginally cave drawings, but after the folks at Lucas Arts got ahold of it . . . Credit should be given to Ted Turner though who paid for the colorization.

Is this a joke?

He clearly used a Betacam

I'm guessing the guy is a young earth creationist; only coz his aim seems to be dismissing plate tectonics.

Oh, no offense to SR71, but its a long video; I was skipping forward a bit each time the man reassured us what he was saying was fact and easy to understand [a signal it will be dead wrong and conjecture]: Guy says modern theory of plate tectonics and Pangaea are dead wrong, because subduction [one plate being pushed under another as they collide] cant happen on the large scale that tectonic theory claims.

All I remember from all of this is being able to make Ron laugh saying 'hot...liquid... magma...' whenever this shit is brought up.

This post even bores me!

mike the teacher should have his own forum similiar to ask the oracle, but for smart people so i can read things and pass other peoples thoughts off as my own in real life.

Holy crap, all day I am imagining how this thread would play out and I am disappointed. So, is it bullshit or bad science or not? I am struggling with where all the extra mass could come from to make the earth bigger...

I think its all the crude oil that is developing and ballooning things up. We'd better put a tap in that puppy and break out a Hummer for everyone so we can get rid of it all before the darn thing just pops!

Now THAT would be ironic, wouldn't it !

This video blew my fkn mind......maybe i'm a rube, but i'm SOLD!

makes perfect sense....even as a child, i thought there was something fishy about those earthquake-prone tectonic plates.

If true, would that mean the laws of gravity - in fact, everything we know to be "scientific truisms/fact" today- operated differently? (i.e. b/c the earth was smaller 200 million yrs ago, E did not =mc2, but perhaps E=mc3.....). If so, what affect would that have on, well, everything? If.....if......

if my aunt had balls.......

i thought i had an answer as to where the xtra mass came from....something like the dense core of the earth, slowly expanding due to temperature loss/gain or rotation acceleration/decelaration?.......but as i thought about it, my brain began to hurt.

Where did the water come from? Chemical reaction to the newly introduced mass?

So should we consider tapping Mars like a keg, to get that water thing happening?

cant...wrap...mind...around......

Its madness!

i always thought it was like this, sure lava and shit is creating new 'earth'. so the bottom of the ocean is new because thats mostly where these rifts are spewing lava. but the earth doesnt get bigger because wind and water is eroding the older 'earth' away.

Thats right.

The bottom is 'new' where ever there is seafloor spreading, if you draw a line halfway between europe and the usa down south to south america and africa, youre drawing a line where seafloor speading is producing new crust. Happens in Pacific too.

There are other scenarios; uplifting, two plates can collide instead of spread; the china and tibet plates colliding = in Himilayas. One plate can go under the other [subduction].

This is all the stuff the guy in the video says is dead wrong. Why, I dont know.

=

There have been theories of past earths that were radically different and changed by events in the solar system, most famously Velikovsky's 'Collision of Worlds' which is a wonderful example of a famous best selling book written by an authoritative knowledgable person, that turned out to be 100% dead wrong.

when you pull all that coal and oil out of the ground and burn it you would think that can reduce the size of the earth

plus there might be an ocean at the center of the earth with giant lizards... what if that ocean dissipates and all the giant lizards die?

also, his movie shows the water spilling out from inside the earth, pushing the continents apart. really, as the earths temps cooled, the condensation in the air did as well and formed rain. this water seeks out the lowest possible surface, thus the water filled in the great valleys of the earth, creating oceans, lakes, and whatnot. the rising sea levels created the continents, not by moving them away from each other, but simply by separating them by huge bodies of water.

knowing this, we can then move on to ice ages and how the changing sea levels created and destroyed land bridges, helping and hindering the migrations of different species, including our own.
