I've read Iron man, and I think Robert Downy Jr. played a perfect Tony Stark.

I think that Sheepy thinks that some fans are excited by the ending or that Downey nailed Stark just because it's the "thing" that the net is telling them to do.

I think that just the hint of an Avengers movie is exciting some people. They are going to need a good script for it, though.
And Robert Downey Jr. did a great job, but Eli is right that some people are just parroting what they have heard. Not to detract from his performance though, because RDJ played the character extremely well.

Even though a Sam Jackson style Nick Fury is straight out of the Ultimates, the entire Marvel Ultimates universe is essentially what movie studios do to Comic Book movies anyway - tweak the origin stories of the Big Name Superheroes.
In other words, SLJ being Nick Fury in a 616 Iron Man movie makes sense in a completely twisted way.

Iron Man was a complete mash-up of original and Ultimate story lines, which I assume any other new Marvel movies will be - at least as it applies to Avengers related characters.
Look a the new Hulk movie - the Abomination is strange mix of the original Emil Blonsky character and the look of the Ultimate Abomination.

He always has looked like Tony Stark and yes i realize hes way to old now but he still would have been a kick ass ladies man ala Tony Stark, and the suit is CGI so its not like it would be tough to have had him
and Clint Eastwood would have been a kick ass wolverine back in the day

I saw it on Saturday with a friend who enjoys comic book movies, but she probably hasn't read a comic book since she stopped reading Archie. However, she wasn't overly looking forward to the movie since she doesn't like Robert Downey Jr.
After the tag after the credits she turned to me and said 'Woah'. What she got excited about was the fact that it was Sam Jackson in a 30 second cameo which gave it more weight and the promise of a bunch of different heroes coming together in a later movie. However, she did mention she'd like to see Iron Man, Hulk and Spiderman together, so the average movie goer might be disappointed if Spidey isn't in the Avengers movie like I've been hearing.
She also said that the movie made her do a 180 on RDJ and that Stark was a great character, though she obviously couldn't comment on how close it was to the comic.

Sweet holy fuckable fuckface fuck-a-doodle-fuck, stop saying "616." Nobody actually uses that shit except for the nerdiest of nerds who ever nerded (aka people who get boners over the Handbooks of the Marvel Universe and the hopeless staff hacks that have to write them these days). There's the Marvel Universe...and the Ultimate Universe. It's not complicated. We don't need stupid numbers cluttering things up a la DC.

If you saw the Fantastic Four movie, the origin was ripped directly out of Ultimate FF. Different experiment, but otherwise it was a more plausible origin in the modern day than a rocket into space being bombarded by rays.

No, AoA was supposed to be "today" if Xavier had been killed when he was younger. It was basically saying, "if he had died, this is what you'd be seeing right now instead of the usual Marvel Universe." AoA was technically existing instead of the original universe.

no rumor, marvel issued the relase dates for iron man 2, thor, and the two avenger movies right after iron man's first weekend
Marvel plans to launch its 2010 film slate with the release of the sequel, Iron Man 2, on April 30, 2010, followed by the launch of Thor on June 4, 2010.
Additionally, Marvel is planting its feature film stakes for summer 2011 with an Avengers-themed summer – a two-picture project which will debut on May 6, 2011 with The First Avenger: Captain America (working title), followed by The Avengers in July 2011.

So, here's a question for Sheepy or anybody else who is well-read as far as comics go.
I've never really gotten into comics - not that I wasn't interested, it was mostly just a combination of not much leisure time and wasn't sure where I should start. So most of what I knew of Iron Man was based on what I read in my college roommate's bathroom stash of Twisted Toyfare Theater! I can mostly identify the members of various super groups, so I'm not entirely ignorant, and I know the basics of their personalities. But I'm lacking on the story end of things and I don't even know the first thing about where to get comics, or if compilation books exist, or anything like that.
I really liked Iron Man and after I saw the movie on Sunday, was thinking about trying to pick up some stuff about him (and I'd be open to the rest of the Avengers as well). So what would your recommendations be as far as what I should start with, and what do you think might be the best way to get my hands on it?
Thanks in advance for the advice!

If you want to start with Iron Man, they're releasing alot of Iron Man trades this month, but I'd recommend these three:
Devil In a Bottle
Armor Wars
War Machine (the 80s one, not the Chuck Austen one - trade came out last week)

You can pick up some trade paperbacks on Amazon. Some suggestions although there's not much out there (compared to say Superman, Batman or Spiderman trades):
Iron Man: Extremis
Ultimate Iron Man (a parallel universe Iron Man)
Iron Man: Many Armors of Iron man.

I'm not the biggest Shell-head fan but I can recommend the following trades representing newer material:
Iron Man Vol. 1: Extremis
Iron Man Vol. 2: Execute Program
Iron Man: Hypervelocity
and these for some history:
Iron Man: Demon in a Bottle
Iron Man: Armor Wars

If you're willing to part with $50 and don't mind reading comics on the computer, there's a DVD-Rom collection with just about every issue of Iron Man published until the end of 2006.
http://www.amazon.com/Invincible-Iron-Man-Complete-Collection/dp/B000VW2RZ8
They also have versions for Spider-man, the X-Men, The Avengers, The Hulk, Captain America and a couple others. However, the company that made those has lost the rights to manufacture these discs, so you might have to search around or find a second hand copy.

Original Team: Thor, Hulk, Ant/Giant Man, Wasp, Iron Man, and Captain America (counting him as an original, although he was added a couple issues in and Hulk was gone)
Ultimate Team: Thor, Giant Man, Wasp, Iron Man, Captain America, Nick Fury leading, and Banner/Hulk in a scientist/nemesis/hero role.

When I was a kid I thought those Marvel Superheroes cartoons ROCKED! I think they aired on channel 9 here in NY (WOR) and there was nothing else like it on TV. Cartoons created by cutting pictures out of comic books and moving them slightly over and over again.
The theme songs are fantastic! "Doc Bruce Banner, belted by gamma rays, turns into the Hulk. Ain't he un-glamourous?" "Tony Stark, makes you feel, he's a cool exec with a heart of steel" "When Captain America throws his mighty shield, all those who chose to oppose his shield must yield". Brilliant!
