So I'm getting DirecTV installed at my new place next Monday with the HD DVR Plus and now I"m hearing I might need a phone line to use it. Does anybody know if it's absolutely necessary? Cause I just use my cell.

they needed the phone line to save mor ethan 1 show at once

maybe you wont need it, if you save only 1 show at a time

I'm not sure about the HD receivers, but I have an older DVR of theirs that runs TIVO. It appears that I receive some of my software updates through the phone line and that particular receiver sends them information as well.

And yet, my other DVR from them is the DirecTV brand (which is no where near as good) and I seem to recieve updates from them without the phone line.

I get my PPV from them by ordering it online - so no need for the phone line for that one.

I'd give them a call and ask specifically what the phone line does for you. You may be able to live without it.

If not, can you run a long line over to your neighbor's house?

no, it'll display your caller id on your TV when the phone rings. Other than that it's just for their own stats and preventing piracy. Receiver software updates come from the satellite not the phone line.

Here's another thing that sucks on the DirecTV brand of DVR. They now have a policy that 24 hours after recording a PPV movie or event it will automatically be erased from the hard drive.

I've always liked DirecTV, but I'm becoming more and more frustrated with their brand of DVR.

I'd replace it with a TIVO unit, but I'd hate to have to pay the monthly fee for TIVO on top of what I pay for the older DVR unit that has TIVO in it for FREE!

:furious:

It's not the phone line that lets you save more than one show, it's the second "cable" line they run from the receiving unit outside your house.

they stopped allowing me to order PPVs using the remote b/c they weren't able to connect via phone line to my receiver. i just order the PPVs online.

Well, yeah turns out I don't need a phone line unless I want to order PPV's over the remote. I can live without that option.

But what I didn't know is that they have an On Demand thats in a beta testing. You can hook your box up to your router and download shows onto your list where your recording are. That's pretty neat.

DirecTV is great, as long as you enjoy being locked into a minimum 2-year contract.

I have Dish network wich is the same shit just a different company and I don't have to have one. We just use cell phones and it works just fine. So the answer is no sir. It won't be necessary to waste that cash.
