View Full Version : Tom Cruise's New Movie: Total Bomb?

All indications are that Tom Cruises' long-awaited (by someone, I guess) project "Valkyrie", about a plot to assassinate Hitler, is a real piece of shit. It's been shelved yet again, and won't appear before 2009 at the earliest. Of all the news about the movie, though, this one amuses me most:
The quality of Cruise’s German accent was widely commented on. The film has also had to have reshoots after footage was damaged in labs.
This movie was supposed to be Cruise's debut as a Hollywood mogul, since it was going to be one of the first movies put out by United Artists since he took it over. That's kind of in trouble too now.
I don't think I've ever seen such a major star melt down like this. But it couldn't happen to a bigger douche.

I was just talking about this movie yesterday.
I'm pissed that it's both getting terrible feedback and shelved because i wanted to see it pretty badly.

It is a great subject for a movie, and it sounds like it could really be a great film. But everything I've heard says that the big problem with the movie is Tom Cruise's shitty performance, and since this was to be the movie that would show he's a "great actor", not just a celebrity, that's not going anywhere.
In short, to save this movie, you'd need to recast Cruise's character. And that's not going to happen.

What was his last movie that was actually watchable?
I kind of liked Vanilla Sky...do we have to go THAT far back?

Eh, Minority Report was kind of fun.
I was just browsing his IMDB.
He really hasn't done a ton of movies this decade, and especially in recent years...I guess he's been too busy....ummmmm.....'promoting?'

these are his films of the past 10 years (i dont count the Austin Powers cameo). I'd say i geniunely liked 4 of the 8 of them. 50% probably isnt that bad. I think his best work of all time was "Born on the Fourth of July" and that was 20 years ago though
# War of the Worlds (2005) .
# Collateral (2004)
# The Last Samurai (2003)
# Minority Report (2002)
# Vanilla Sky (2001)
# Mission: Impossible II (2000)
# Magnolia (1999)
# Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

I am all for word play but i find some humor in the fact that the title of this film is "Valkyrie" and the myth is that the Valkyries were all women.

I really like Minority Report.
Collateral is one of the best noir films in decades. If it had cut out the bullshit between Jada Pinkett and Jamie Fox and the awful use of Audioslave songs, it would be one of my favorite films.

These above are the 4 i liked. I never got into the Mission:Impossible films..just not enough substance for me I guess.
Btw, I think "The Last Samauri" doesnt get enough attention for being as bad of a movie as it truly is. Remember when Tom Cruise is laying on the ground yelling "Sakai! Sakai!" in the worst portrayal of alcoholism in a film ive ever seen

I thought Collateral was just all right. I never saw Minority Report. I love Magnolia, but upon rewatching recently, it occurred to me that for all of the kudos Cruise got for his acting in that movie, just about everyone else in the cast was better than him. His crying scene was a little embarassing if you ask me. I hated Eyes Wide Shut when I saw it in the theater, but I think the pacing of the dialogue just made me nuts, so I may have to go back and re-evaluate at some point.

Eyes Wide Shut is fucking fantastic. Anytime I met someone who says they're a fan of Kubrick but that they hate that film, I want to just scream "LIAR" at them until they cry.
And I'll defend Collateral to the death. It's far from perfect, but there's some pretty amazing stuff in that film.

I think Collateral is a solid, all around movie. When I worked at a video store, I would throw it on all day because it was easy to take.
I do agree, I have never seen a Tom Cruise film and said "Only Tom Cruise" could've pulled that off. And I probably havent seen a film where I didn't think that an actor couldve been even better than him. But he does know how to read a script, and he does know how to choose a director...and I guess that works for him.
I do not think Tom Cruise can make a good movie out of a shitty script..and i think thats what makes a great actor. When I leave a movie saying "that movie wouldve sucked but that actor was great in it", then that guy is a good actor

Oh, come on and be fair. Who else could have pulled off Woody in the tour de force "Losin' It"?

It's probably the epitome of "white guy saves the day" syndrome.

I like the movie, but damn, why's whitey gotta be stepping on everything?

I think you miss the point that he had deep emotional connections and respect for the so called "savages" that he was employed to basically destroy.
I dont think that they tried to make him master their fighting style, he gets his ass beat down like ten times and once by little kids no less. He just picke dup on certain things as he was with them for a pretty long period of time.
He didn't enter into the situation to try and tame their savagery, he was sent there to train their own government army in ways of American military. He really didn't give a fuck about them until he was captured and forced to.

Yes, I know, and like I said, I like the movie, so I don't think is some kind of crippling flaw...just amusing that there's no possible way this movie and epic story was made without an American main character somehow being insterted into it. It's just typical.
But the scene I posted is pretty retarded. As much as I enjoy the film, him suddenly being a ninja is ridiculous.
