Last winter I tore my hamstring.

It's been over a year now and I sometimes still have trouble with it. On a normal day I have no problems with it. But it will get sore the day after I do something out of the ordinary. For instance, yesterday I did a lot more walking than normal including going up and down a lot of stairs. So it's pretty sore today. This will also happen if I play basketball or something. Is there anything I can do about this, such as a specific exercise or stretching routine? I do stretch if I'm going to play sports but should I be stretching it everyday?

Holy shit!
I just pulled my hamstring bad playing softball last night. I was thinking about posting a thread for treatment advice. I tried to stretch it a little last night. Now I have a cold pack on it.
I'm 28 and have had few injuries despite growing up playing football, soccer and baseball, but in the last 2 weeks, I got a kick in the achilles and a pulled hammy. Bad luck or I'm getting old. Fuckin atrocious fields that we play on and idiot hacker soccer players.

I'm no doctor or physical therapist, but if your hamstring is for the most part okay on a daily basis, you could probably benefit from stretching daily or massage therapy every once in a while.

you can try resistance exercises to help strengthen and lengthen your hammies.
lie on your back and flex your hip and extend your knee (if somebody is around to help out, even better). find your end point of the stretch (the first point where you feel you cant go any further) and back off slightly. slightly flex your knee (preferably rest it on somebody's shoulder while your hip is still flexted, and with 10-20% of your strenth, try to flex your knee further for a count of 8. continue breathing, on your next inhale, extend your knee and continue to stretch your hip to its new endpoint. repeat 3-4 times.
scheduling a medical or sports massage following a basketball game will help it also. keep icing it...if it's not acute, alternate heat and ice.

I pulled my hammy and my brother is a pt. The best stretch he gave me was to lay on the floor and put one leg on the door frame and one on the floor. Start out at about a 45 degree angle and work you way up to a 90+. Of course there's the touch your toes and cross your feet over eachother and touch your toes.

I feel like I have a continuous cramp in my shin. It never seems to go away and I wish I could make it stop. I think people call them shin splints. I have felt it for years.

Massage, massage, massage! That's a muscle that's really hard to stretch and massage might help to loosen it up.

Thanks for everyone's advice. I started a stretching routine this morning (including the one that Jennitalia suggested) that I'm going to do everyday for a while to see if it helps. If it doesn't then I will go see a physical therapist.
