So... It came out. It's almost 67MB, which is no big deal for me. It took me about a half hour to download and install. However, a friend of mine has dial-up.:wallbash: Several years ago, Microsoft offered a free CD with Service Pack 2 on it. This would be perfect for her, but I can't find anything on Microsoft's site that says whether they will do the same thing for "3". Has anyone heard if they are going to do this again?

How about you download it for her and burn it onto a cd?

67 MB shouldn't be a big deal for anyone, unless they're living in the mid 90's.

How long has it been since you used dial up? Not only is that big for dial up, but Windows updates download very slow. Even with a high speed connection, it took me at least 10 minutes. Oh, and I can't burn a CD for her. Her husband doesn't want me around. That's another story altogether.

There's a guy at work who still uses dial-up and he has FIOS available where he lives.
It's not that he doesn't go on-line, he's just a cheap fuck. I'll never understand people.

I tried to download it today and it crashed my computer. When I restarted, Windows wouldn't start. After trying several times to get Windows to start, I finally gave up and had to do a PC recovery. I lost everything. Luckily I backed up a couple of days ago but I have to re-install all the programs I use for work and now I'm having trouble getting some of those to work.
My life totally sucks right now, I need some of this stuff to work or I have a miserably time doing my job.

I had no problem at all on two comps, but my father is having the same problem as you are (but he didn't lose anything). When he installs it, the comp won't reboot. Let me know if you find out the problem, so I can tell him.

Well you probably won't get much info from me. I tried again after I did the PC recovery and it did it again. I won't be trying to d/l SP3 again anytime soon.

This is one of the reasons that I blew off the upgrade.
I'll wait a few months so I can absorb all the feedback.

BTW, Nevnut... It's too late to help you now, but did you try Safe Mode? When my father's wouldn't reboot, I told him to try Safe Mode, and do system restore. That did the trick without having to do a recovery.

Yep, I tried Safe Mode and it locked up and did nothing. Believe me I tried all options before I did a PC recovery.

That is exactly my problem. I'm just now getting back to something "pre-install" after a couple of days recovering from my "crash".
Luckily my office is my home, so I've spent hours the last couple days trying to get my machine back to where it was before I tried to download SP3. I'm a surveyor so I have a lot of programs on my computer that I use for work, programs to download data collectors and Autocad.
My life has sucked the last 2 and a half days, there's only so much time I can spend in the office vs. working in the field with as busy as we are getting.
Thanks for nothing Microsoft.

I guess I got lucky. Both of my comps have AMD processors.

Continuous Reboots Plague Windows XP SP3 Users
05.09.08
by Chloe Albanesius (chloe_albanesius@ziffdavis.com)
What are you doing this weekend? How about watching your PC continually reboot? That's what some aggravated Windows XP (http://www.pcmag.com/topic/0,2944,t=Microsoft%20Windows%20XP,00.asp) users have been doing Friday after installing the XP service pack 3 (SP3).
The problem appears to primarily affect AMD-based computers, though there are also some cases in which Intel-based machines will also run into trouble, Jesper Johansson, a former program manager for security policy at Microsoft (http://www.pcmag.com/topic/0,2944,t=Microsoft%20Corporation,00.asp) who now runs a Windows-related blog, wrote in a recent post (http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jesper/archive/2008/05/08/does-your-amd-based-computer-boot-after-installing-xp-sp3.aspx).
Microsoft (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2302371,00.asp#) was scheduled to release the XP SP3 download on April 29 (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2288724,00.asp), but a "compatibility issue" delayed it until May 7 (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2704,2297848,00.asp). Mention of the reboot problem first popped up on the Microsoft forums on April 23, prompting some to speculate that the poster's problem was due to an outdated version of SP3, but users who installed the final version soon reported the same issue.
"At this point, I want to clarify that the endless rebooting is not at all related to SP3 per se," Johansson wrote. "The problem is that with some configurations, SP3 causes the computer to crash during boot, and Windows XP, by default, is set up to automatically reboot when it crashes. That is why you end up in the endless rebooting scenario."
Johansson offers a detailed work around on his blog.
"Microsoft is aware of these issues and we are investigating them further," according to a spokeswoman. "We will keep customers informed with our progress. Any customer who experiences a problem with Windows XP SP3 installation should contact Microsoft Customer Support (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2302371,00.asp#) Services."
Service Pack 3 adds several networking and security improvements, and compatibility with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2302371,00.asp#) security credential providers. It also incorporates features previously available individually as separate updates, such as Microsoft Windows Imaging Component (WIC), Microsoft Management Console (MMC) 3.0, and Wi-Fi Protected Access 2.
Meanwhile, Microsoft reported this week that users who install XP SP3 will not be able to downgrade from Internet Explorer 7 to IE6.

It turns out, the problem is with software that comes installed on HP computers (and I think Compaq), too. The computers contain a mirror for systems that have Intel chips, but the comps actually have AMD chips.

For a fix from HP. My father tried it, and it worked perfectly.
