We are doing some remodeling and I was thinking about enhancing our home security during the project. We have a dog, shotgun, and standard locks. I was thinking about adding exterior cameras over the doors and perhaps a secure door to the bedroom.

What levels do you guys go to with home security?

I wear my gun on my hip, and keep it close by at night, and I live in a "good" neighborhood.

I've often thought I'd like a camera at the front door, for those "Unbreakable" moments.

I recently saw on the news someone in an apartment building (probably the landlord) installed cameras on the fire escape and they actually had quality pictures of an intruder. I thought that was fantastic.

I really dont think you can go "too far", as long as you stay within your budget.

2 dogs, a small arsenal, and tactical training. All of which were not aquired in the interest of home defense, but offer that as a bonus.

I have a legal question. Is it legal to build a security chamber where a intruder steps on a tile or stone that triggers the walls to slowly and dramatically close in with spikes that come out of them and some of the spikes have skulls that the spikes go through the eye socket?

Is that legal?

As long as it doesnt also punch him in the balls, I see no problem with it.

I'm all over it then. I'm adding a master bedroom to my house. I'm going to put a steel door on it, and add cameras to the outside of my place. Not that my area is that bad, but I figure why be the weak one on the street.

It's crazy that a 12 year old could kick in just about anyones front door.

Now my only other problem is getting my lady proficient on the Remington 870. She is scared to handle guns.. :wallbash:

Full alarm system---a baseball bat and 2 pistols ready at all time---and a Maltese that will chew your foot off.

Dog (fluffy will tear your ass up, son), soon a dog with a class 32 (training to a 64), and a 2 foot machete. My fiancee' is drilling me to get a gun, but i'm terrified of the damn things. Eventually it's going to happen, but i'd rather chase a intruder around with my insulin sharpes while screaming "AIDSSSSSS!".

TheMojoPin

I'd suggest you leave immediatly, or else I'll release the dogs. Or the bees. Or the dogs with bees in their mouths, and when they bark they shoot bees at you.

I'm corner property. If it was up to me, I would dig a moat. Right now, baseball bat and a machete. Alarm system with central monitoring within a year. (after a few renovations)

I have been scared ever since seeing all the "bump key" videos on youtube. It is as if all locks on doors are obsolete, truly!
When I am home, I use wedges and door jammers to deter home invasions, but when you are out, there is nothing you can really do. I keep a baseball bat and other long reach weapons next to my bed and a side by side shotgun nearby with some scattered ammo.
Check out bump key on youtube and youll see what I mean, maybe one of you will invent a way to deter it!

I work at home. Every couple of months, I get gentlemen from out of the area, with 'official' looking laminants and clip boards looking for donations. They always seem stunned when someone answers the door.

Deadbolts, floodlights, and a lovable dog that knows the difference between a visitor and someone who doesn't belong here. He scared someone away just last week. I also keep a club within reach when I'm in bed. Though I can sleep through a riot, the sound of my doorknob turning will wake me up.

No alarm system? That's step 1. Step 2 is deadbolts and secure doors for the access points (metal doors, better door frames that can't be kicked in as easily). Lock down entry into the house before you spend time worrying about secure doors and cameras.

Nice Bob, I'll add these to the project.
