Yesterday we went to get some fatsmash food. I'm used to buying pine nuts and some booze, so a 50 dollar bag of groceries does not catch me off guard anymore.. However, this time I was shocked. I did not have anything too crazy. It was some fruit and vegatables. The bill for a couple of meals is just insane.
Here is the list:
3lbs grapes
Cantelope
small seedless watermelon the size of a cantelope
rice vinegar
soy sauce
2 packs tofu
5 apples
Two 4 packs of bottled tea
cucumber
two carrots
small bag of shredded coleslaw
couple sprigs of mint
fat free plain yogurt
tobasco sauce
head of broad leafed lettuce
small bit of ginger
lime juice
Total:
$93.75!!
Holy crap.. All our stuff fit in three plastic bags. While we were checking out, the cashier asked if we really wanted grapes. She said we had 14 dollars worth. I quickly looked at the apples, and they were 7 dollars too.. That's about $1.25 per goddamn apple!
I get it, yeah some fruit gets expensive, but this is also Ca. we have fruit within a few miles. These prices are above and beyond.
My question is, are retailers just jumping on the gouging bandwagon? Sure prices should go up a bit, but this is insane. Are we that seriously fucked? Should I start hording cans now?
I seriously don't know how a family of four can do it without eating shit for every meal. How can you not take your kids to a 4 dollar fast food meal when eating healty costs so much. My hat is off to anyone who feeds their family good food these days.

Wow, don't know where you buy your grapes but $14 for three pounds is crazy.
I have a family of four and our weekly grocery bill is in the $125-140 range. We get most of our fruits and veggies from the neighborhood fruitstand which is cheaper than buynig them at the grocery store.

Yeah, I bought them at stupid Vons. Nothing special.. I think your right. It's time to support the local farmers market.

My wife and I spend at least $200 every other week on groceries, and it's just the two of us.
And that doesn't really even include all the cat food and cleaning things.

If you think its expensive in California, you should come up to the barren frozen wasteland that is northern Canada.
When I first moved here from out east I didn't buy potatoes for about 3 months because I couldn't bear paying $5.99 for a 5 lb bag, especially when NS is right next to PEI and we could buy 20 lb for $1.99...highway robbery I tell ya.
Apparently further north in Nunavut they pay about $15 for a gallon of milk, so I guess it could be worse.

i dont know if they're gouging but the cost of gas for the truckers delivering the groceries and stuff prob has something to do with it

i know lots of prices at the trader joes i work at, the rest i guessed at should be within a dollar:
3lbs grapes 4.99
Cantelope 3.49
small seedless watermelon 2.99
rice vinegar 1.99
soy sauce 2.49
2 packs tofu 1.99
5 apples 2.49
Two 4 packs of bottled tea 8.99
cucumber 2.29
two carrots .89
small bag of shredded coleslaw 2.49
couple sprigs of mint 1.69
fat free plain yogurt 99
tobasco sauce 2.49
head of broad leafed lettuce 3.99
chunk of ginger 1.99
lime juice .99
total: about 48 bucks, plus tax. margin of error: probably 5 or 6 bucks
i dunno the sizes of some products you bought, so that might have something to do with it. but you live in california where theres more trader joes than any other state, you might wanna try em out. that being said, our prices have gone up a lot over the last year, the entire industry is hurting and it isnt gonna stop anytime soon.

You should try buying from a farmer's market. Anybody not buying their veggies from a farmer's market is crazy! It cuts my grocery bill down significantly.

All you people who live in civilization have no idea how lucky you are to have access to stuff like farmers markets and fresh produce. All we have here is Safeway so not much to choose from.

We spend like $500-600 on groceries a month for 2 people, it blows. I think we may have exceeded that this month too.

HAHAHA, yeah there is a TJ's right up the freeway.. as we paid, my wife goes 'Damn, we should have gone to TJ's'. It would have been at least 30% cheaper, we love it there and we are stupid for not going the extra 5 miles.

It's not even the cat food that is so expensive (even though it is), its the fucking litter. My stupid two little eating and shitting machines go through so much of it.

We're pretty much in the same range. I'm afraid to see what the grocery bills will be like when our son gets older (especially if he has his dad's appetite).
We live right across the street from a farm, but, since it has a petting zoo and is pretty much a tourist trap, the owners charge more for their produce than the local supermarkets do.

We buy a lot of store brands to save money. when it comes to stuff like Cheerios or Chex, there is no difference. We also use online circulars to make our list before we go into the store. Also buy things in bulk and keep them frozen.
My biggest problem is that I constantly buy instead of make lunch, which I really have to start working on.

Yeah, I need a big freezer to get some of those bulk buys.
Ugh, I am doing the numbers and it's driving me crazy.
I just asked the lil lady, she sposes' she spends 75 a week on food groceries.
I figure I spend 45 on items to fill the gaps per week.
We also spend 105 a week on Starbucks.
I figure we each buy lunches at work for 120 a week.
We also eat out 3 nights a week for 150 a week.
Our wine beer and booze consumption has to be around 50 a week.
Jesus.. 545 a week give or take.
