now that spring is here, ive been checking the weather all day everyday waiting for the first big thunderstorm. i dont know what it is but i am obsessed. my house blew over in a tornado in 2002 and i was terrified of all bad weather for a while but now i love thunderstorms and dark clouds in the sky. i always keep my blinds closed at home but when it rains i open all the blinds and open the front door and sit and watch. anyone else have a strange obsession with thunderstorms? or maybe just kinda like the rain?

Love 'em. Especially down the shore, watching lightning hit the water. But I'll take them in the Northeast, where we are relatively tornado-free. However, I would like to chase a tornado once.

Great thread..I thought I was alone again???..Sometimes when I watch the radar I get mad when they miss us...I have seen 3 tornadoes in my lifetime..I hope I never see another...Just like the black sky building to the west then I run for my favorite radar site....

I was in a wicked thunderstorm in Dallas 2 weeks ago. It could have been the leading edge of a microburst or an actual tornado, actually. It was about 3 in the morning when the rain started coming down in sheets, then the wind picked up. It was biblical. I got up and moved into the hall away from the windows and it turns out that the house across the street had all it's windows blown in on the one side.

It trashed my brother's fence (I was staying at his house). It also took shingles off the roof, and completely lifted one of those blue wheeled recyclable bins from between two cars and took off with it. He has no idea where it went.

Driving to the airport there were tree branches everywhere, and I saw a billboard that came right off it's base.

Whew.

Yeah, but thunder only happens when it's raining.

Lightning [and the accompanying thunder] can and do come out of clear skies. Someone was killed on a beach near here a few months ago; the closest cloud was miles away but that didnt stop enough potential to build up for a bolt that killed a guy playing on a sunny beach.

I record storms if theyre good; such is my fascination. Last night it started rumbling so the Zoom H2 goes on the front porch to see if I can get some nice thunder, and some good lightning strikes, like hearing the ionization build up just before the bolt.

I'm terrified of thunderstorms, but that's probably because my mom instilled the fear in me. If I took a bath or shower during the storm, she'd freak that I'd get electrocuted. If I was talking on the phone, she'd swear lightning would come through the receiver and kill me. If I stood near a window during the storm, lightning would seek me out as a target.

Thanks, Mom! :bye:

Cool! We're supposed to get thunderstorms tonight. I love watching them from my balcony. Plus, they'll wash away this damned pollen.

The best thunderstorms I saw were during the rainy season (winter) in Saudi Arabia. With all that open desert, the lightening was that much brighter and really lit up the sky and the thunder just seemed to echo forever.

We had one of those thunder explosions yesterday, that sound like a bomb going off. My whole house shook, and I was sure that lightning must have hit right outside my window. I texted a friend who lives about 7 miles away, and it sounded the same to her. Imagine what that must have sounded like, at the exact spot it hit!

When I used to go stay with my ex in-laws in WV, I'd sit in my car during a storm (wasn't allowed to smoke in the house) and sit back to watch the lightning. They lived on top of a big hill that was surrounded by mountains. During some storms, the lightning was striking about once every other second in all directions. What an awesome show, at night!!! Especially when stoned.:smoke:

2 men enter. One man leaves.

Oh, thunder storms. I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. I used to love watching violent thunder storms ravage Detroit even more than Detroit ravaged itself. Counting the seconds to figure out which friend might have died horrifically or had received secret powers. Seen trees split in half by lightening just meters away from me. Ditto for Boston.

Unfortunately atmospheric conditions over Portland, Oregon make thunder extremely rare (maybe twice a year...or maybe silent but deadly). My thunder has literally been stolen. Waah.

We had a small thunderstorm last night here. About 4am in the NJ area.
It was pretty cool but some what mild.

Last year we had several storms that were so strong they struck the trees that are in our backyard. The entire house rattled with the thunderclap. One storm hit at like 3 in the morning. It was so loud it woke both me and Crippler up. Took us a while to fall back to sleep.

I think that was the same storm that created a tornado in Brooklyn last year.

And THAT'S something you do hear about very often.

even living in North Dakota, (unrecognized land of tornado destruction) that storm this week was amazing. It looked like my enclosed porch was doing 65 mph on it's own. I couldn't see OUT my windows!
It was the first time that I've experienced the tingly feeling and have the hair on my head feel like it's "standing up" and I thought...time to go to the basement.

I live on the south shore of Long Island. When we were kids my parents had a big house with a great wrap-around porch. When the summer thunderstorms would come we'd sit out on the porch and watch them. I love a great thunderstorm, especially in the summer. Those storms are usually so intense, yet so quick.

A look at weather radar shows East Coast/ NYC Metro area about to get hit with a nice line of nastiness; heading to a city near you soon.

Anyone? Skies opening up?

End of the world-type storm raging in North Jersey right now. Fantastic lightning display for about 20 minutes now. House rattling thunder, heavy rain, firetruck sireens, dogs and cats living together...

Great storm last night in Brooklyn though it lasted about 30 minutes. There were a couple of lightning strikes within a few blocks.

I am originally from Spokane, WA and I remember thunderstorms being much more dramatic and lasting longer in eastern Washington State. Maybe it was just because I was a kid and they seemed like stronger storms. Recently I went to visit a friend in Madison, WI and we had the strongest thunderstorm I have ever been in. He said storms there are usually that strong. I have lived in Washington, DC and Brooklyn for seven years and I find the storms generally fast moving and not as dramatic as you would get in the inland part of the West or the northern midwest.

I was one of the many people who lost power last night. Came back on in the middle of the night. Played boardgames in candlelight while watching lighting through the windows. I'm tired. Stayed up too late because we lost track of time due to no working clocks that were in eyesight, then waking up at almost 2am and needing to get out of bed to turn our ACs back on, turn off the tv, shutting windows, etc.

Yeah nice storm last night, although it sounds like it lost some of the intensity (the hail, etc) you Bergen county / Western Jersey folk are talking about by the time it reached Hudson County / NYC ( the mountains beat those storms up quite a bit). As Furtherman was saying it really was sick seeing it come over the hills in JC. It looked and sounded like a storm you would see in a movie.

Apparently the storms came right up thru Toronto and as a result my flight home was canceled. I am sitting in a hotel room in Winnipeg, only 1/3 of the way thru my trip home drinking a bottle of wine.
My flight was supposed to leave Winnipeg at 3 pm but at 2:30 the flight was listed as delayed then about 15 min later it was canceled due to severe weather. Sux to be here alone, but at least I got stranded in a city I am familiar with so I knew exactly where to go to shop, instead of getting as far as Toronto and getting stuck.

Weather has always fascinated/frightened me. Living on the fringe of Tornado Alley, I have seen more tornadoes than I could possibly count. The town I live in has never been hit but we have had some very close calls. Last year, a storm produced softball sized hail that destroyed the roof of my house. There was a tornado in the cloud as well but I couldn't see it because the storm hit us after dark. I could hear it, though, and this one made a different sound that wasn't like the others I have heard in the past. It wasn't a rumbling. It was more of a high pitched swirling sound. Probably a little fella.

Especially the different types of storm cells...I would say I'm also in to watching locomotives coming in to town in the morning and taking pic's of different types of diesel smoke:wink: ...But that is a lie:lol: But I really do love watching and studying the weather....Hayseed Juggy

Have you ever seen "ball lightning"? There is probably some scientific name that I'm missing...I saw it once as a teenager and it solidified a friendship because we were the only two witnesses. Afterwards it seems like the lightning here is capable of different sky colors than on the east coast, and the horizontal lightning we get during warnings is alien to me. I'm not sure if it's just that I never paid attention when I lived on the east coast, or if the electrical aspect can be different regionally.

I think Ball lightning is unexplained by scientist... I have never seen it but I do know it is a real phenomenon that does exist ....I'm not a very good speller so bear with me I mix up my toes and my fingers sometimes.......

We had a ten minute wall of wind hit my area today. The whole county looks like a disaster. Huge trees down everywhere.

I was in a cab going into the midtown tunnel on saturday and the light flashes behind the city made it look like a war zone. Then it poured for five minutes and stopped.

the storm hit by me around 3 pm yesterday and came out of nowhere. it was so swift and severe, that im convinced it had to be a tornado at some point. there were trees torn out of the ground and plywood shot into cars. im in the north bronx, btw.
