Report: Fallon To Replace O'Brien On 'Late Night'

Jimmy Fallon has been tapped to replace Conan O'Brien on NBC's Late Night when O'Brien takes over hosting duties on The Tonight Show from Jay Leno next year, Fox.com entertainment columnist Roger Friedman reported today (Thursday), saying it was "a done deal." Friedman, who cited no sources, said that NBC plans to make a formal announcement around May 11th when it presents its fall schedule to advertisers.

I think our Fallon would make a better host.

Media execs always have to go with brand name over experience. He'll do just as well as Van Halen did after stern. There's so many other candidates that could pull this off better. Carson Daily would fare better.

I think Sarah Silverman would've been a great choice. She's smart... pretty... sharp... and, it's about friggin' time a women owned a slot in Late Night.
And... there's the added drama of her being Kimmels GF.

Amy Sedaris is a great choice.

Tina Fey would've been a great host too but, she's obviously going on to bigger & better things.

Premiers at 12:35 tonight people. I'll give the guy a chance. No one could have thought Conan would be as good as he was when he got the gig (except Lorne).

He's had an interesting career. Never a superstar on SNL but did do WU. Taxi and Fever Pitch both stunk but he'll always have a place in my heart because of a role in Almost Famous and a cameo in Band of Brothers.

Be watching.

I'm following a Twitter feed on the show, and the reaction si brutal. Some good ones:

"Is Jimmy Fallon hiring writers who were too crappy to write crappy skits for SNL?"

"Seriously, who thought it was a good idea to give Jimmy Fallon an interview show? The man was the worst part of SNL, and his movies sucked."

"Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" has a gross orange glow. Also, a distinct stench of UNFUNNY.

ell, Fez predicted this show will not last long, and I think Fez was correct. This show is HORRIBLE! Fallon is not good with comedy that lasts longer than 5 minutes. His delivery of jokes in his monologue was terrible. He kept pausing, hoping for huge laughs (which there were none). The jokes were pretty much the same as Leno's (who is also not funny anymore). Then he did a skit called "Lick It For A Ten", where items were brought out (a lot like the old Let's Make A Deal) and he had people lick them. The first guy licked a lawn mower and for doing it he got 10 bucks. Wouldn't a better prize be the lawn mower? The a girl licked a office printer/copier and the last guy licked a goldfish bowl. It would have been funnier if he was made to lick the goldfish and not the bowl! His interview with Deniro was the worst! Jimmy didn't know what to ask and every question basically reflected back to him (like Tyra does). Deniro looked so uncomfortable. It looked like he wanted to leave. The "Space Train" skit looked like a SNL skit that was too stupid for SNL. The interview with Timberlake was also a nightmare. But this time, Jimmy wasn't the only asshole out there. Justin was a total douche as well. They talked about their Bee Gees skit on SNL, then JT went into mocking Michael McDonald (HOW CURRENT! NOT!) Finally, Van Morrison played some music. Odd, he could have had JT do music, but instead they go with Van Morrison.
In closing, I think the show is doomed without a lot of retooling, like maybe Conan back! Will he make it? I don't think so. Time will tell.

KnoxHarrington
03-03-2009, 06:25 AM
To me, the problem with the show last night was that it seemed to confirm everything people thought a Fallon show would be: he was uncomfortable, he did laugh at his own jokes (or really looked like he was working at trying not to laugh at his own jokes), and he couldn't do anything with a guest he hadn't worked with before. Which was what all the detractors of his hiring said he'd do.

Yeah, I get the thing about how he has to be given some time, but I don't think it was just first night jitters. I don't think that he fits this format.

KingModem
03-03-2009, 06:38 AM
Jimmy looked exceptionally nervous. But then again, anytime I have seen him on television he has always been very unprofessional.

Luckily him laughing during the cowbell skit on SNL was well-received.

For some reason I feel like Lorne Mikes must be Jimmy's uncle or something, or else he wouldnt get these breaks.

Exactly. I really haven't like Fallon at all, but this is a totally new thing for him. In hindsight, Conan had some bright moments in his first couple of months that make it seem a LOT better than it was, but his first few weeks were BRUTAL to watch for the most part.

Hey Buddays.
I went to a taping of Jimmy's show and I had a great time.

I've been to at least 50 tapings of Conan's show and I gotta say, Jimmy's show is a much better experience.
The whole thing is done on-the-cheap. It feels "slapped together" (which of course, it isn't)

For some reason... the crowd is much more energetic and interactive with each other... and with the host. Jimmy mingles during the station breaks and when he's not, you can see that he's truly diggin' The Roots.
Maybe it's a bad thing but, it almost feels like the audience doesn't take him seriously. It's as if we're watching a skit. I can't explain it any other way other than to say, the whole thing feels like a joke.
It's a lot of fun.

I don't like Jimmy Fallon and have never liked anything he's ever done. I couldn't stand his cutesy, cracking himself up bit in the middle of sketches on SNL, didn't think he was anything special on Weekend Update and his craptacular movies speak for themselves. From what I've seen from his first week I've gotten douche chills.

That being said - I've been a huge fan of David Letterman ever since he had a daytime/morning show. I grew up on Late Night with David Letterman and when he left I was very skeptical of Conan taking over. I don't know if anyone fully remembers how brutal Conan's first year was. I recall him looking FAR more uncomfortable than Fallon even looks. I would never in a million years believe, back then, that Conan would have ever lasted more than his initial contract much less go on to the Tonight Show. And I would've kicked you in the nuts if you ever told me that I'd wind up finding him funnier than Letterman.

With that in mind - even though I can't stand him - I'm holding off passing a verdict on Fallon just yet.

Yeah, I'm willing to see if he can grow into it like Conan did, but like you said, the guy has done NOTHING that hasn't made me cringe or at least think he's a horriby unfunny, floppy-haired douche. Conan at least had the cred of having written some of the best Simpsons episodes and some really great SNL sketches. Fallon has a track record of really unremarkable mediocrity or worse.

It would be cool if Fallon could turn into a really funny and capable host, but I'll believe it when I see it.

At least the Roots are on TV.

Like I said, its hard to argue humor. Especially with someone who saw half an episode and is painfully hip.

And intelligent and handsome.

I hated the mere idea of the show before I actually sat down and saw it. Then went back and watched the whole series. Last week it referenced 'The Wire' and this week 'The Big Lebowski'. It's writing is very smart and they use call back and references that typical sitcoms would never have the intelligence to use.

They have bad moments like the Britney thing but they had to try to get ratings up. I tried to watch Bing Bang Theory and it was terrible. Tried to watch 2 and a half men and thought it was one of the worst things ever on TV. But this show was an exception. 2nd best sitcom on TV right now.

I thought I'd never watch a 3 camera show again and I hate all of them except for this.

I've seen at least a dozen episodes. I keep hearing how good it is so I keep trying to get into it and it keeps failing. Maybe I've lucked into seeig the dozen shitty episodes.

I just don't see what's so different about it. To me it's interchangable with the parade of Friends clones that came out over the years. Jonathan Silverman is sitting at home pissed that the Single Guy is all but forgotten while the exact same show is now prased as being one of the better sitcoms out there. On top of that, besides Segal and Doogie Howser, I can't stand the rest of the cast. I am not just busting out the hyperbole when I say that they're some of stiffest, most awkward sitcom actors I've ever seen with absolutely APPALLING timing, especially the main dude and the stroked-out retard from Buffy.

Cool pop culture references do not a quality show make. I've seen enough partial episodes of shit like Reba and Two and a Half Men thanks to them being the "scheduled programs already in progress" after a Cubs game on WGN to realize that even the worst sitcoms will drop "hip" pop culture references.

hammersavage
03-16-2009, 10:14 PM
We see it differently. I heard (and said) the same exact things before I saw it. Then I watched it. I had friends who said the same thing, I've turned many around. The timing thing makes no sense. The acting is debatable I guess.

Enough derailing, back to Jimmy Fallon. Now we all can agree that guy sucks ass.

Did anyone see it last Friday when Tracy Morgan was on? Jimmy was going to ask him why he bashed him in a Penthouse interview. So he did... but Tracy Morgan walked all over him and never answered his question. Then Jimmy apologized to Tracy and gave him a lion fish as a peace offering.... but for what? Tracy never admitted to anything and Jimmy just gushed love upon him.

It was really cringy.

Also delightfully cringe-worthy was watching Jimmy and the dude from Endgaget (or whatever) talking about the new Palm phone. The two whitest men alive were getting really excited about it... and eventually attempted to high-five each other. It did not go well.

I'm loving the progress I've seen thus far. First night was obviously a train wreck, but it's been better than any reality tv watching a guy develop in a spot that you can only train yourself for by going out and doing it. I like fallon, i like his guests and interviews, and i love the roots. i think he's really gonna come into his own once the writing finds its stride.
