View Full Version : Board Name, or Real Name?
Freitag

Snacks brought this up in another thread, and I think it's good thread fodder, so...
Do you prefer both on the board and in real life to be refered to as your board name or your real first name?
I have a habit of referring to people I know "in real life" by their real first name on the board. To me, it's more polite, more personal, and less awkward. In contrast, people whose first names I know but I don't know them in real life I DON'T refer to by their first name. (Examples would be Hippo, HBox, etc. I think with Hippo it's also because there's another Jeff on the board.)
In real life, I call EVERYONE by their real first name and I refuse to call them by their board name. The only two people I remember calling by their board names in real life are Stugots (who I shortened to "Stu", which sounds like a real name anyway) and Pixie, and that's mainly because we are just acquaintances.
So what's your opinion?

the reason i signed on to ronfez was i met some members at my cousins poker game. everyone i met called each other by their board name. when talking to my cousin or justice if they mention someone from the board i never know when they are talking about unless they use their board name.

I hear this!
I've been in crews, boards, guilds and I have about 8 different names that could get yelled out at any one time. I guess some of it is to accomplish is a level of anonimity. Some are endeering, some are dorogitory, some are me, trying to be cool..
Frankly I have a tough time remembering names, so I just call eveyone I like, 'brother', and I call everyone I don't 'hey you'.
p.s. no spells checks on this one.. sorry

It depends on the situation and person.
I know that some of the girls refer to me as both Maria and Ninny but that later is most often in the presence of someone else who may not know me as well and thus is familiar with me under the board name. I don't know why i would be in public and address someone with a board name if i know their real name and am talking to them on a personal level.
I think the most obnoxious and rude encounter I've had with this is when i went to the VIP club thing. I was standing outside with Gonzostyle and my boyfriend. A member walked up to me and exclaimed "Hey i don't know who you are!" to which i replied "...and i don't know who you are" and turned my back.
I just felt like, why would that be your introduction to someone you don't know? It seemed really self important.

Also, I hadn't given you permission to call me by my "real name" here on the board and I really felt that decision belonged to me and not to you.
Plus, I think that I am a lot meaner here than I am in real life, so it's really frustrating to have been "outed" without consultation.

Ninny/Maria brings up a good point. Whenever I meet someone in real life, I always add the standard caveat - "Hey, what's your real name? I don't like calling people by their board names?" It's awkward yes, but also honest. And once that initial awkwardness is out of the way, I don't feel awkward anymore.
I go between calling Effme by either EffMe or Lisa. It's part of the way my head works, because I already KNOW a Lisa from the board (Lisa Croft) so she's Lisa "in my head".

I really hope you're being sarcastic here and I'm missing it.
1) Your real name is the basis of your screen name. Am I missing something? A
2) Also, your brother outed you before we even KNEW each other,
3) and with the amount of "real world" stuff about our relationship you've put out there, I think I get a pass for the sin of calling the woman I dated/lived with/MARRIED by her real name.
Friday

I have been 'Friday' for so long now that I am used to answering to it. So unless I am out with mixed friends or with people who I know on a more personal level, it's usually what I am called.
I usually introduce myself with my real name first.... but the moment of recognition is always when I say "Friday".

04-24-2008, 08:44 AM
My board name is first inital + last name. I have friends that call me that anyway. Most of the time its auble, very rarely is it jeff (thats reserved for professional/dating situations primarily).
My initials are S.A. and the "in" part doesn't mean anything. Maybe it did when I registered, but I forget. I've thought of changing my board name to "essay" since it still sounds like my initials, but then all my sigs would be obsolete.

04-24-2008, 08:57 AM
I introduce myself as my board name, followed immediately by my real name. I'll answer to my board name, but I think it's stupid to be called it. Only reason I still sign up with this name anywhere is because it's become a habit since I've been using it for 10 years. On my two main message boards, my best internet "friends" call me "Nick" or "Marsico".
It just seems silly to me to want to be called by your board name by people in public. If you meet a random stranger, you don't introduce yourself by some silly message board name, so why would you do it with a person you've actually corresponded with before?

(1) This is true, but most people didn't think about it until I 'splained it.' In the "how did you come up with your board name?" thread.
(2) That was different; it was mostly by request. (http://www.ronfez.net/forums/showpost.php?p=297084&postcount=32) (He IM'd me first. But nobody continued to refer to my me by my first name after that ... it was mostly the board name until you started with it.) And we had just met.
(3) This applies to past deeds, not present ones.
You just didn't get what I was trying to express. I was pissed at you for it; we talked it out and came to an understanding ... therefore, I am no longer pissed at you for it.

I've never met anyone from any board.
Although, my name on FBA is "My Real Name Is DJ" (even though its D.J.). But that came about because IRL, I get, "Is your name really D.J.?" all the time.
Maybe I should just change my name here to "D.J." and hopefully people will confuse me with A.J.
I was embarassed as shit when I went to the show. I friggin squirmed when I had to say my name to Sheepy, HTG, and Fleaman. Ugh I stink... I try to introduce myself as Anthony.

As much as I hate my board name -- especially after the guy I named my cyberself after killed his family -- I (almost) always refer to everyone by their board name when on the board. This is mainly because I know how confusing it is when reading a post & not getting the joke, or even being able to follow the flow of the conversation, because you can't connect the comment to the real name & then to the board name. Usually you can figure it out, but it's not always readily obvious.
In the case of the very few events I've attended, I do always try to get the real name to go with the board name, just because it feels silly calling some board members by their board name.

Everyonce in awhile I have to catch myself and NOT call someone by their board name. Like Hosp called me couple weeks ago and I answered the phone "Hey Hosp whats up" and he got so mad I didn't refer to him as his real name.
I always seem to call Alkey Alkey and not Pat though.

my board name is also my real name. i introduce myself with my full name at events, because it feels silly to me if people think i use a board name (even though many folk outside of here call me sailor as well).
and i can't believe papabear missed that easy biggie line.

I haven't spent more than an hour (at one time) listening to Rap since sometime around 1988.

Sorry this is not a reply but someone at ron and fez please read this!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have someone working there who's initials are R.K. Don't ask me why but I work with this asshole at night and I'm trying to get him good. This sounds weird but when he either hears this or it happens (preferably) he will run or flip out. Introduce him to Collin Quinn and actually make him interact with him. I know no one else will get this but his reaction will be golden and don't tell the asshole. anyone who want to post this is stupid I don't care you will never see me on this again, but please trust me. R.K. IS AN ASS!!!!!!!!!
LOL.

actually, unless i know who they are, i normally think people's real names are their board names, and that they look like the person in their avatar or sig.
example: a.j.
as far as i'm concerned, he's that dood with the dead black eyes.
i prefer to call people by their real names.

My board name is my wrestling name, and I answer to it all of the time.
I also answer to: Sec, Section, and 8

Leaguer. I said "leaguer".
I've only met and introduced myself to a few people at Unmasked tapings. Hearing someone (usually me) say 'Gritty' seems sillier than seeing it on a screen. I'll usually say "I'm Tom. Gritty from ronfez.net" and however I'm addressed from that point on is fine with me.

She introduced herself to me as "EffMe". I just felt really weird saying to her, "It's very nice to meet you EffMe."
Haha no worries! Sorry for making you feel weird.
If I was out in the street and I heard "EffMe" I would turn my head. It's instilled in my brain now.

She said "Effme" and I started taking off my pants. THAT was awkward.
Yeah sorry 'bout that. I have to stop being so demanding.

Oh no....not at all! I really didn't feel weird. I just thought it would sound odd if I said it like that. That's why I went for the simpler "it's nice to meet you".
But next time -- I'll remember "EffMe" is OK with you!

All I know is, if I meet Jughead at some event - unlikely since he lives in the Hoosier state - I'm calling him Jughead. Right to his face.
Jughead.

At least your first reaction wasn't to look down and exclaim "Oh! I get it now!"
(Sorry about that, EffMe)

My name is Ryan. My board name is not too far off of that. Nobody knows me so my name is irrelevant.
Irrelevants are bigger than Rhinos, so I'd stick with that.
Plus, you'll look better in pajamas.
