so, ronnie treated dave with disdain today for not having been to florida before. i have to admit, i never have either. just never had any appeal for me. is ron right? is it crazy for an adult to have never been there before?
also, if you did go there, where did you come from?

that does sound a bit crazy to me, because a lot of people just call florida "new york south". i've been many many many times. doesn't even matter that i have some family down there because i've been down there many times without even going to see them.
& ron was right. disneyland is crap compared to disney world.

I've said it many times - there is no place in the world better than Ft. Desoto. Its a small series of 5 Islands in Tampa Bay. Once again, the beach was voted Best In America. (2005,2008)

This is the sunset I will look at every Saturday night from now until the snook stop biting this season.
Its a state park which means no industry, no houses, no hotels---just natural beauty.

first time when i was 8. grandparents took me and my 9 year old brother. the beach club in ft lauderdale. i learned to swim that year and dived off the hi-dive the last day of vacation. also and not sure how i figured this one out but i put on a mask and clung to the edge of the deep end and would watch the girls dive in and their bottoms would come down. saw alot of white hineys and pubic hair. eventually got chased away

Born and raised in flordia.
Greatest place on Earf.
I went to a Jets-Dolphins game in Miami a few years back with a bunch of buddies. There's just something incredibly wrong with watching a football game in late November and sweating your ass off. I believe it was 86 degrees at kickoff.
The fans seemed far more interested in tanning than watching the game. Instead of stale beer and hot dogs, all you smelled was suntan lotion.
Weird people, those Floridians.

I'm pretty convinced that any New Yorker or Canadian, who has ever been to Florida, has spent at least one night in my town. This time of year, about 80% of the cars in the motel parking lots around here, have NY or Canadian tags.
Oh, and yes. I've been to Florida.

Florida is just a basic vacation spot when you grow up in the NY/NJ area....
Disney, Epcot, MGM.... those are practically required in the parenting handbook!
And if you are lucky you have been to Daytona (in the 90's) or Key West (in the 00's) on spring break!
ALSO.... soooooo many cruises depart from Miami and Fort Lauderdale....

Well, we vacationed to Disney World every other year from the time I was 3 until I hit 13. At 13 I spent a summer outside of Tampa in my Uncle's palacial home on the channels that lead to the gulf. At 23 I moved to Orlando and lived there for 7 years. I then moved to Daytona Beach and lived there for 5 years. I then moved to Ft. Lauderdale to attend school where I lived for three years.
Orlando has great attractions and night spots. The Disney experience is really cool and they keep the grounds there first class. The food is great as well. Night spots are pretty cool and there's always something to do. The rest of Orlando is shit. Just like many Florida towns, the city engineers suck ass. The traffic is a nightmare on both city streets, suburbs and the expressways.
Aside from Daytona, Tampa has really nice beaches and is kept a little better than Orlando. A little more wide open. Also, people don't seem to be as collectively dumb in Tampa but I've never resided there.
Daytona is by far my favorite place in Florida. The beaches are great and again, always something to do...day or night. When it isn't vacation season, it's like any small town except the beach is a lot emptier and it's like you have it all to yourself at times.
The event weekends can be a little tiresome as year round there's always a bike week...boomin' car stereo weekend, classic car weekend or the worst of them all...black college reunion (BCR) Most of the locals get a weekend of supplies and stay indoors as they don't want to experience BCR. There is fucking in the streets, cars stopped at any given point in the street or on the bridges as the "alumni" get out of their cars to piss, dance or just sit there listening to "music" and most businesses, not hospitality or drink related, close for the weekend because of the theft and vandalism. Some even board up due to the damages that are often incurred.
Ft. Lauderdale has a great harbor but the beaches suck imo. They build all the way up to the sand in most parts and the shores are full of shells, rocks etc. There also seems to be a massive drop off from sand to shoreline. The strip on the shore is pretty cool as far as bars, restaurants and such but the city itself, and the surrounding areas makes you crazy. By far the worst congestion and stupidity you will ever witness. Ft. Lauderdale drivers have the intelligence of fire hydrants. never have I witnessed such stupidity on the roads and again, the way the city is set up doesn't help either. It's like they gave the boundaries to the residents of Lamb's Farm and told them to "build" a city.
I've been to Jacksonville a bunch of times and it's a shithole from end to end. There are literally two spots for decent night life and they are about 45 minutes apart. people who went to the Super Bowl there can attest to this. The streets are garbage.
The best part of Florida is obviously the weather. Though it gets extremely hot in the summer, the rest of the year is like a mild to moderate spring. I'd rather have three months of intense heat than six or so months of cold and crappy weather. If the weather wasn't the way it was, I don't think too many people would crow about it the way they do. The people who are from there are, aside from Daytona and Miami due to diversity, are no different than any other redneck state. Daytona has the surfers/stoner population which balances it nicely. Miami has the whole Latin thing thanks to Castro.
The people that come from the North make it more bearable for me. There are tons of people from New York, Chicago and Boston which I fit in with a lot better than most of the locals.
The landscape is very beautiful in the outlying areas and though I've never been to The Keys, I hear it's like any tropical island getaway.
I hope that was detailed enough.

Surprisingly, I've actually been to FL.
I took the Greyhound bus from Port Authority to Panama City over Thanksgiving weekend back in 1999 for my best friend's wedding/daughter's christening.
(This is not advisable, recommended or something that even remotely resembles a good idea. Between the "Greyhound bus" part and the "Thanksgiving weekend" part, there's a middle-of-the-night layover in North Carolina that can't end well. Oh, and a day and a half on a bus is .... disgusting.)
I spent the first night (Thanksgiving) at my friend's apartment in Tallahassee and the next night(s) at her dad's house in Panama City. (They're on the panhandle; some folks tell me that the panhandle isn't really Florida. It's closer to being Alabama.)
While it wasn't completely awful, it was a little weird being able to wear a summer dress in November. Up until a couple of years ago, I still had a photo of me out on the deck of the reception site overlooking the sunset and the Gulf. It was pretty.
But I'd never been before that bus trip. It just wasn't feasible.

Went to school in Tampa for two years and my long-lasting memory of that is when I first flew down to start school and walked out of the doors at the airport into a wall of humidity. That and the huge cockroaches (until I got to Texas and found they had even larger ones). At the time, the west coast of Florida was really quiet as opposed to the east coast with Lauderdale, Daytona Beach, etc.
Have been back many times for games or conventions. But when I retire it's Southern California for me!

Well, Dave is from New Jersey. And he was born in California. Do we know if his family was in California for a long time before they moved? My dad was from Jersey and my mom was from Philly and we went to beach in Wildwood, even though there were better beaches just as close to where I grew up in MD. People tend to go where they knew, if they knew California then it almost makes sense that they would go to Dinseyland instead.

I'm from and currently live in Arkansas and Florida is a big vacation destination for people here. It's only a 10 hour drive to the panhandle and it's a preety nice place. The beaches are bright white, the water is beautiful and you can rent a house for a decent price. I've been to Pensacola, Destin and Seaside in the northern side. Then I've been to Orlando two or three times, Tampa and Clearwater. I'd reccomend it to anyone. I've never been to the Atlantic side but I can vouge for the gulf coast.
