Hello,
While watching the Rangers beat the Devils Friday night, I was wondering, what is the hardest specialty position in sports? I feel that these positions not everyone can do. Yes their is training, but these positions are sore of like a natural ability. Not everyone can be one.

Goalie for Hockey: Have to keep balance on the ice, able to see the puck from far away while 10 bodies are all around and in front of you, have to deal with the puck flying at you at high speeds

Goalie for Soccer: Non stop 45 mins. Protect a very large area around and above you. Catch or stop a hard rubber ball coming at you.

Baseball pitcher: Ability to throw different pitches, throw at very high speeds, aim said pitch into a very small area, have a person with a bat hitting the ball back in your direction only 60 feet away.

Quarterback: Have a line of men coming at you each weighting about 300 lbs, ability to throw the ball to a perfect spot, ability to throw a ball 30, 60 or more yards to a moving target, throwing a odd shaped ball and at a decent speed, remembering different routes and dozens of plays.

Just was thinking...

I'd actually say being a catcher has to be equally as hard. You have to worry about calling a proper game, while at the same time appeasing your pitcher (otherwise you'll take the blame for his failure)...meanwhile, you're sitting in a crouch that wreaks havoc on your knees over the years; worrying about any baserunner taking off, trying to remember scouting reports.

...oh yeah, and if you hit a shade under .240, the entire fanbase in your city will be calling for your job, because no one actually appreciates the role you play.

Being that none of us play pro sports, id say all of the positions are ones we cant do, except maybe Center for the Knicks. I could do better then the current one if I didnt even get on the court

id say qb b/c you have to remember all the plays, make reads, avoid sacks

goalie in both soccer and hockey have to protect their goal and see through other players

but a qb has to see everyone on the field as well and make split second decisions

I know nothing..and I mean nothing of basketball. So I could not even try to add them to my idea. I watch basketball and I feel they are all doing the same thing. I can't get into it.

A quarterback has to be able to see the depth of the field, be able to see if a WR is double or single covered. All the while 5 to 6 guys are rushing at him while another 5 or 6 guys try to protect him. To throw the ball in a somewhat perfect arch to match up with the WR. To me it is mind bogging.

A goalie for hockey is pretty amazing. Knowing that a little rubber puck is going to come flying at you. These 250 lbs. men are going at great speeds and might run right into you. Also cleats are pain full. Have a cleat step on your hand or arm..OUCH. But a razor shape skate that could cut deep, that is down right scary.

I guess I have to say goalie for Hockey. To swivel around and be able to block the puck, deflect it away as well as watch for rebounds is pretty amazing. I love football(can't wait for the season already), but I think I have greater respect for a hockey goalie.

For basketball, it would be point guard. They're the ones who, usually, get the offense going and dish off. Really great point guards are few and far between.

uuum specialty position doesnt mean to you what it means to me

its gotta be pinch hitter

you ride the bench for sometimes weeks at a time
waiting to get the right match up
and then you gotta go in cold, sometimes with little to no warning
and have a major ammount of pressure on you to get your chops
tough

defensive back

you are the last line of defense. in most cases you are up against an opponent who is bigger than you, tight end, running backs, offensive lineman. receivers are usually equal build, sometimes smaller, sometimes bigger.

there is no goalie behind them if the offensive player gets by

Have to disagree. To me a pinch hitter has the great life. Don't play the field, get up to bat once in a blue moon and make a good salary. Yes he has to come out cold, but no harder then anyone else at bat.

the only problem is there is no position pinch hitter. They ask you to pinch hit occasionally but you actually play a position as a backup

Goalie for Hockey

Goalie for Soccer

Baseball pitcher

Quarterback

Given the four original choices boobieman set forth, I'd have to say being a pitcher in baseball is the most difficult. I have respect for all of them, but it probably requires the most nerves, concentration, skill, and athletic ability.

As incredibly difficult as it is to be a hockey goalie, I bet you could suit up anybody on the team and although he'd surrender a lot of goals, a few pucks are bound to just hit him and therefore he's done the job. You can't send any position player to the mound and expect him to be the least bit effective.

I agree with Pitcher..knowing that you only have so many seasons before you probably fuck up your arm for life, if you are lucky enough to escape injury earlier, has got to be a major mind fuck.

what makes a "specialty position"? pitcher doesn't seem like a specialty position like goalie, for whatever reason.

Thats not true every team in the AL has one. Except they call it a DH.

Lacrosse is definetly goalie, because not only do you have to stop a plastic ball being whipped at you at speeds over 80mph but you are also the one making defensive calls

Football is QB on offense (with a nod to the center who makes the line calls) and MLB on defense as they make the calls for the defense in IDing the formation, strong side and what coverage to go in all within the first 7 seconds the team gets to teh line

Baseball is probably in my opinion all that way, hitters have it tough as do the pitchers
