Hello,
Wondering if anyone out here has or experienced using a portable air conditioner. I don't have a wall sleeve. Don't want to stick another unit through a window and deal with the hassle I had last year. What's a good brand, what's a good price, and which one is quiet? Also where you got it?

Any info anyone could provide would be great.

Thanks

A friend of mine and his wife were living in a small apartment with the shiitiest little windows you could NOT mount an A/C or even a venting line in. When they looked into free standing A/C units they were kinda shocked to learn a good one will run you well over 600 dollars.

I would say to do Amazon and read some reviews if they sell them. If not, maybe Consumer Reports? It's a good question. I've heard people want them but sticker shock usually keeps them in fans and their underwear for the summer so I have no feedback to offer you.

I will try amazon and a few other places. Not much out there. What I have seen so far is a high price. Guess I have to hope for some sales.

Never heard of some of these brands. Just have to keep looking.

Thanks

Just get a kiddie pool and fill it with ice.

Spend the summer in that...it's like a slice of heaven.

Last summer a girl I was seeing got the Sunbeam 10,000 BTU unit amd we returned it 2 days later. It cooled her bedroom off, but the water pan would fill up every hour, requiring dumping. It was a pain in the ass, some of the water would always spill when emptying.
If you get one think of going to Circuit City or Best Buy, they don't give any hassle if you want to return it.

I thought of that, but I don't think my apartment is big enough. And then all those pesky kids in the neighborhood would want to come by and jump in. And they never help with the clean up or help me refill the pool...those little bastards....

We've been looking into DirectBuy. We have an appointment with them next Sunday. They show you how to buy directly from the manufacturer. Here's a link:

My father got this one at Best Buy. (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8625589&type=product&id=1193452148147) He likes it a lot and it seemed to work really well when I was there. They also have a 12,000 btu one for $70 more.

Saw that one this morning while I was searching. So you father said it is good. Any problems with the water? Also how do you vent it out the window, any more info you can give me would be great.

Thanks

I have a basement apartment and the windows are too small for a regular ac, so I have been using the portable kind. Works great! The one I have is from Amana, and I saw one a few days ago in BJ's for less than I paid last year in PC Richards.
Its great also because it ejects the rooms moisture through the exhaust sleeve. I had an old one before this and it had this water tub I had to keep emptying out and it was heavy and a pain in the ass. It also would shut off if it got too full. These new kinds you can have running for days, no problem.

Direct Buy is a scam.
There was a news story about it about a month ago.
Be careful.

Here's a little something to read (http://www.infomercialscams.com/scams/direct_buy_scams)

Cheapo air conditioning: 2 big floor/window fans (the square ones), 4 bags of block Ice, 2 midsize Tupperware bins..
Put 2 blocks of Ice in each bin..put the fan behind and blowing towards the bin..turn fans on high. Done.
Empty out water in am. repeat as needed..also..keep blinds closed during day, open windows at night for air exchange(open at top and bottom for the best results.) (PS. Keep the fan a bit elevated above the ice..Electricity + Water = a whole new set of problems)
