I haven't really seen a big Summer Movie since the last Star Wars episode, but I saw the trailer for Journey To The Center Of The Earth 3D last month (when I took my daughter to the Hannah Montana 3d movie) and the 3d effect was pretty amazing. I think I'll actually check this out.

I've always been a huge Robert Downey Jr. fan so I'll definitely check out Iron Man. I'm a little concerned that it's being released so early in the season. Isn't that usually a sign that the studio doesn't feel that the movie can compete head-to-head with the other summer releases and it wants to get a jump on the grosses while there is no serious competition?

The Indiana Jones movie intrigues me as well.

This may be the best summer season in quite a while.

I want to see WALL*E and can't wait for it to be released.

We saw some preview clips at ComicCon this past Saturday and it looks really good. (Unlike the last Disney/Pixar collaborations that have come out lately. *sigh*)

I am also very excited about Prince Caspian ... it looks faboo.

Since Matty is a fan of both, I will probably be taken to Speed Racer and Iron Man. I'm not sure how I feel about either movie, as I'm not familiar with the characters, but am actually looking forward to Iron Man because of Robert Downey, Jr. He's amazing when he's sober!

It's getting amazing reviews. 100% from the Top Critics on Rottentomatoes.

I'm also reading that it's an good science fiction movie along with the lovin' Robots.

Here's how I would rank them so far in order of preference...

1. Speed Racer
2. The Dark Knight
3. Iron Man
4. Hellboy 2
5. Wanted
6. the Zohan

Didn't Like:

Indy
Hulk

Love Guru
Hancock
X-Files
Stepbrothers

Didn't See:

Narnia
Sex & the City
Kung Fu Panda
Wall-E
Get Smart
Journey
Mamma Mia

I'm looking forward to Tropic Thunder more than Pineapple Express though because for me nothing from the Judd Apatow canon except for Walk Hard has ever really lived up to the hype.

Choke August 1

I did see this at comic-con this year, they screened the whole movie. Its going to be a great film, or at least the cut i saw was.

Side note: They handed out plastic anal beads to everyone who saw this film....great little gift...too bad the beads were narrow and not pleasing for my anus...

(i give this movie three , out of four, beads up my ass)

I was kind of excited to see Choke despite hating the book. Sam Rockwell is the man and the trailer was quality, but the movie has some major warning signs, namely piss-poor test screenings, last minute reshoots and pushed back release dates.

i would agree with you.
luckily this screening had nothing to do with comic con, save for they both took place in the same city during the same 4 day span.
i am a SD local, and get to go to all kinds of screenings thanks to my local paper.

the fanboys at comic-con can be fucking overwhelming...and from what i understand..people waited overnight this year to get a sneak preview of a heroes episode followed by a 20 min q&a...

id rather sit at home and catch it in september...like everyone else.

and while there was a Q&A with the director afterwards....just about everyone there left during the credits to go catch another screening..

These are the ones I'm holding out hope for. I was really excited for Terminator until I heard that it got bowdlerized so a bunch of texting tweens can ruin my showing of it. On paper Basterds looks like it has the inside track to be the best so I'm just hoping its lousy trailer is a total misrepresentation of its actual quality.

So far the season is off to a crummy start with Wolverine, which was the type of viewing experience that many consider to be the absolute worst - the kind that's not good, but not awful either so it's just sort of...there.

its so obvious to me that Terminator 4 is going to be bad...the type of movie it is, to be good its gotta be rated R. no question about it. I think its going to get panned, maybe some will say "its pretty good" but the movie will end up being a "nothing" movie just like Terminator 3, which a lot of people forgot even came out

I thought Wolverine was borderline dreadful so if TS really is worse I'll be stunned and horrified. McG might be getting a little ahead of himself with his bold proclamation that he wants to bypass what he feels is an antiquated movie system and fund/distribute/pocket the profits of all of the future releases that fall under his umbrella.

I know there's a lot of hate for Terminator 3 but on a level of pure action spectacle I thought it was very satisfying. And I just got a kick out of seeing Arnold back into his most iconic role. It helped that I went in with the intention of hating it so my expectations were nonexistent. The last TS trailer really got me jazzed up for it and now it looks like I set myself up for disappointment.

How about that review from the Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2009/may/20/cannes-film-festival-tarantino-inglourious-basterds)!

Quentin Tarantino's cod-WW2 shlocker about a Jewish-American revenge squad intent on killing Nazis in German-occupied France is awful. It is achtung-achtung-ach-mein-Gott atrocious. It isn't funny; it isn't exciting; it isn't a realistic war movie, yet neither is it an entertaining genre spoof or a clever counterfactual wartime yarn. It isn't emotionally involving or deliciously ironic or a brilliant tissue of trash-pop references. Nothing like that. Brad Pitt gives the worst performance of his life, with a permanent smirk as if he's had the left side of his jaw injected with cement, and which he must uncomfortably maintain for long scenes on camera without dialogue.

My point still remains that harry has no taste in movies, if he says its good then I will hate it, if he says its bad or a plot that he cant follow then I will love it because it takes more than a 5 year old to understand the film.

Rule of thumb, if harry says its he cant understand the plot then its a good plot and if says its a great movie then it means its a crap film with 'splosions.

Also, considering how unenthusiastic I was when I went in, it was almost a pleasant surprise that I didn't find Terminator Salvation horrible. The third act was a total mess but before that I thought it often did more than a decent job of servicing. The action set pieces start off really imaginative and then just get progressively lazy. I'd say it was one notch above Wolverine and one notch below Star Trek on the quality scale.

Thats the point, he thinks every film they send him to is good, that is why they keep sending him to films, the only other film he didnt like was the love guru, which is on equally shitty comedy footing as that flintstones film.

Lately people have said that as his sight has grown and gets more hits, he makes greater demands, all you have to do is a quick search to find out the guy bases most of his reviews on how much shit he gets or how nice the hotel room is they put him up in for the trip.

Doesnt matter the film will do a shitload of business and will most likely win the weekend with the thursday opening, but kids do drag their parents to see quite a few shit films.

What's the word on Ponyo? http://www.apple.com/trailers/disney/ponyo/trailer_large.html It's got some big names for voices and it looks like it is drawn although with a japanese/Asian style.

The summer is over.

Mercifully. Unless G.I. Joe rides in a white horse to wrap things up on a goofy high note.

I can't recall a sorrier summer slate during my ten year and change of adulthood. There might be something to the idea that the writer's strike affected the releases since by all accounts a title such as Transformers 2 had its rough pencil-penned first draft rushed into production without the benefit of on-set polish by any of the scribes.

The wierd thing is people seem to champion and impune the aggregator in the same breath. They say Oh look how big this opened even though it's tracking like 10% positive on RT. Meanwhile everyone runs out the first week so they can see a movie and enjoy without everyones instrusive bullshit opinions.

I would assume it's because everyone who was going to see it went out to see it.

But sounds very similar to that movie about the speech impediment with the king.

i was really hoping this movie would help bring classical mythology in to the modern age and out of the dusty corners of nerddom. it was fun to see kids excited about the golden fleece and the winged "shoes" of hermes, as i was when i was smaller. i loved explaining it to the ones that asked. the awfulness of this movie squashed all of that. i got a lot of, "that was wack. you made it sound so much better  "
