I shy away from Gyms because of the Mirrors.
I do not like seeing myself, and I wonder if more people feel this way and avoid gyms for this reason as well.
I understand that weight lifters use the mirrors for form, but I am talking about a whole wall of mirrors whose only purpose seems to be for vanity or to make the room appear larger.
Do you avoid gyms?
Would you be more likely to go if there was less mirrors?

I used to be that way because I didn't want to see how pathetic, sweaty and red I got during aerobics classes.
Now, although it bothers me if I think about it, it bothers me less and less.
Plus, my gym only has mirrors in the classroom and the freeweights area, so I get to avoid them.
Maybe you just need to find the right gym instead of avoiding them altogether.

I hate the idea of working out with people around, mirrors or no mirrors. I prefer to do my grunting in the privacy of my own home.

Ewww.
Gross.
Just gross.
(BTW, don't forget that this forum is in the "That's Life!" section and these kinds of comments push the envelope towards "unacceptable" ... be careful.)

Like Liz said, my gym only has mirrors in the free weights areas and the huge work out room that's for boxing/classes.
However if you don't like looking at people this is what sucks. The upstairs cardio room (the largest area) is a complete open square where everyone can look around and see everyone else doing whatever. When you look down you can see the entire free weight area below you.
I would think that seeing your progress in the mirrors would be motivation to keep going. I wear headphones and watching the TVs so i dont pay attention to others.

I haven't been to a gym in years. I got what I need at home, which doesn't include mirrors. I'm not into aerobics, stationary devices, or weight machines, though.
No more weighting for douche bags to finish curls in the power rack. No more fitness "experts" asking me not to drop my deadlifts, "Excuse me ,you're disturbing the other people and you'll hurt your back."
I lift when and what I want while listening to good loud music.
Theres a great weightlifting gym down the road. The owner is a competitive olympic lifter who sold me a squat rack. If I get back into the power lifts I'll probably go back there, just because it does get boring lifting by yourself sometimes.
I've been using kettlebells almost exclusively for a while now. They are expensive to get started with, but they take up almost no room, and you don't need any other equipment. If you got the cash, and want to train at home you might want to take a look at them.

Apparently I just won a years membership to a gym in the town where I work. To bad, I don't remember ever signing up for it and the fact that I'm almost 9 months pregnant and won't be going to the gym for a little while..
