View Full Version : Which Version of RonFez.net Would You Prefer?
Would you ideally like this place to be a safe-for-work and show friendly site where there's no profanity, off color remarks, nudity, etc? Or would you like it to be a free for all where anything goes?
Or maybe we should bring back The Steel Cage. That was a forum we had here back in the day where people could really tear into each other without fear of being banned.

I have to go with the SFW version we have now. I do most of my posting whilst at work. If we went with a site where there was nudity, etc., there's more chance of this place getting blocked, and then I really wouldn't be around anywhere near as much (that is, if I want to stay married and raise my girls).

I started to respond to your similar post in the "Fuck Danny" thread, but scrapped it.
Your choice of one or the other sounds good in theory, but it really is entirely too black and white. There are two 202-related boards out there that kind of not-so-neatly fit into your board extremes. I won't name names, but I think most people will know who I'm talking about. On one site you're not allowed to say anything critical about the shows (unless it's about Dave), and if you do, you risk banning and deletion of your posts. On the other side, there is an "anything goes" board, where almost nothing gets gets edited, deleted, and real bannings (not three day ESD-clause violation bannings) almost never happen. I'm not being critical of either board, because their policies work for them. I kind of wrenched the two examples into your hypothetical, because profanity and SFW elements really aren't applicable.
Anyway, my point is that we don't fit into either extreme, and we never have. This board has been around for over 7 years, and has flourished, and it seems kind of unnecessary to pigeon-hole it into one of those two extremes, especially since I think it would take away from the general character of the board.

So, in other words, it's entirely up to the mod or mods that happen to be logged in as to whether or not what someone has posted is permissible?
Sounds kinda vague.

I'm on the fence.
On one hand, I'd like to have it SFW. I post on here with my kids around and I like to know that I'm not going to click on something and have them exposed to something they should not.
On the other hand, I am addicted to sex. Not in a joking kind of way... I want sex, I want to see sex, I want to have everything associated with sex all day, every day... So I'd like to be able to click on a thread every now and again that has something vulgar posted. Just to feed my pathetic self.
If we could manage a site that was show friendly, kind, warm and not threatening with a singular area for perverts... I'd sign up and make my very own board name.

It's not a "problem" in the sense that it will change our lives, but it's a problem in that this is no longer a fan site, but a moderator site. Whether you're allowed to speak your mind becomes totally dependent on which mod agrees or disagrees with your point of view.

I'll just say, as a member of "another board", the reason I like this place is because of the atmosphere it has had since the first day I've checked it out.
It's different than the other board, and I like it because it's different than the other board. When I want no-holds-barred type shit, nudity, Dave bashing, etc, etc, I go there. And I go there because sometimes I'm in the mood for that.
I come hear when I want a little bit more SFW, friendy-type(I'm not saying the other board isn't friendly, because they are[to everyone but Dave and Earl], and anyone saying otherwise is talking horseshit), but I like how this place is a bit more light hearted, in everything from the type of humor that the posters partake in, to the subject matter of certain similar threads.
And sometimes I am in the mood for both, and I'm logged into both simultaneously.
"Heavens t' Betsy, dis man's craaaazzzzy!!!!":innocent:
And in summation, I am voting for "friendly".
And might I add that I think I would most certainly be getting an "F-" for my grammer in this steaming pile of shite.:smoke:

It doesn't happen that often. Most of the threads that disapper are of the spam variety.
And sometimes threads that should "disappear" don't.
There have been instances where people have signed up for the sole purpose of posting something hateful against another member. They attack them personally, viciously, and savagely. They are immediately banned, which of course should be the case, but their posts are left there.
What's the point?

Not Safe For Work, used to refer to documents that would probably get you fired if you were looking at them on worktime. Usually R rated or higher.
In short NSFW means viewing content that puts you at risk for being fired.
It's generally understood that NSFW refers to nudity/pornography not simply profanity. IT security typically logs visits to known explicit sites not the specific language of the site. It would take too many resources to do that effectively.
In the past some have posted that profanity is considered NSFW at their workplace. If that is true it can be assumed that viewing non-work related sites is unsafe and it certainly can be assumed that listening to a man insert foreign objects into his rectal cavity as grounds for dismissal as well.
Profanity should not be censored with the exception of thread titles because google's magical space algorithm weighs thread titles higher than the body of the post. We don't need to rank high on the list of SCAT results every time ESD is on O&A.
The language and content of a fan board should reflect the the same rules that the show does. RF.net has mirrored that effectively since I've been here.
When in doubt simply ask yourself what would Ron think and that's the line.

I guess I am ignorant to the subject. Things haven't changed, that I can tell, since I joined, but I am fairly new.
If I knew what it was like years ago, I would have more to add.
I think that I fully understand what is appropriate and what is not. I do not have any malice about my personality.
I do feel that there are many things that I would like to post, but don't with fear that I am going to get shit from a mod. This is what I thought the board was about. If you think that you are going to offend, then don't post. The only problem is that I don't think that I will offend people, but a mod/admin will tell me otherwise.
Steel Cage would be cool.

Be productive and contribute intelligence and wit to the discussions, don't try too hard to be funny or impressive, just act naturally. Remember, nobody likes a character.

This truly is an alien moral dilemma.
For years I only dotnetted on my home computer and I was pretty much an anything goes kind of poster. Back then I was all about free speech and the PAC. Now that I'm I grown up and I come here on a computer that might even be monitored (my real world character is a dotgov), I'm a little more careful and have to stay out of onion booty threads just in case.

No. My problem is that it's impossible to know who is and isn't "a character."
I'm not just talking about board characters, either.
The way some people present themselves on the internet is more often than not the polar opposite of what they're like in real life. This is especially true of the classic "internet tough guy."
I'd venture to say that 90% of the people on the internet (not just this board) say things online that they would never say to someone face to face.

Well, here's the thing.
Messageboards are very very different than real life. People know who I am, and if they have an issue with me, they are more than welcome to bring it up to me in public. The only person who stepped to me in public was Moe, and for that, I respect, even though, at the time, I was stopping from openly chuckling in his face.

You and I have spoken before, but here's the difference: On this board, I have to see your posts. I could choose to ignore them, and for the most part, I do. You and I have nothing in common besides the fact that we enjoy hockey and football and Ron and Fez. RonfEz.net, and the messageboards, are high school. They ALWAYS have been. It's up to the poster if they want to bring high school to real life. I choose not to. I hang out, I drink my beer, I talk with people I know, I leave.
You see me how you WANT to see me. (Sincerely, the breakfast club) The reason why I post the way I do is because it allows me to keep people at an arm's distance. If you consider me acidic, fine. It allows me to weed out the people who can hang and the people who can't. if they want to see me as an asshole and give me no chance for real life redemption, so be it. I DON'T want to be everyone's friend and I never professed I wanted to.

This poll was started in response to a squabble between two Administrators of this site on how this board should be run. It began in this thread (http://www.ronfez.net/forums/showthread.php?t=68815&page=2).
I think everyone here is discussing the issue in a rational manner. No one is "complaining" or has expressed any desire to leave and start their own messageboard.

Steel Cage would be cool.
When there was a Steel Cage forum, was there a mod for it?
Yes there was.
If memory serves me correctly, the Steel Cage forum was the brainchild of The Heckler (Blowhard) and moderated by a mysterious administrator known only as 'Maximus.'

Most people are not at all what they seem to be on the internet.
I guess I'm old school; what you see is what you get. For all intents and purposes, "Gvac" = Greg.
This is not the case for the majority.
I guess a lot of people aren't comfortable with who they are in "real life" so they create a persona on the internet that makes them feel better about themselves. Kind of a superhero alter ego.

G, I am not trying to start shit but hear me out,,,
Why is it that every thread I read is something negative about the site posted by you? Do you actually participate in the site other than telling us how bad this place is now? It seems like every other thread is about you. It is happening too much and it really isn't that interesting anymore. I constantly feel like every thread you have started in the past 6 months is about how much you hate this place. Or how much you love the place but hate the people. Or how much you love the people but hate the staff. Etc.
I did read thru the Fuck Danny thread and I agree the admin was out of line, but it is an isolated incident. Yes, you did have a thread title changed, and you were flamed countless times by staff. But that kind of stuff goes with the site. I honestly don't hear other members complain like you do about the most trivial shit. If someone has a squabble with the site they either suck it up and deal or they leave.
In the past I have busted on you and you have busted on me (probably for you being old and me being young) but here is some serious constructive criticism. The threads that dont involve you seem to be business as usual, but lately it feels like whenever gvac is involved the fun gets sucked away.

Many are here as casual fans, others are crazed and want attention, while some like to debate certain topics and stick to certain forums. I think part of the problem is the old guard here want things to be the way things were in 2002 but thats not how things will be anymore, and hoping to change the way things are around here to match those ideals is unfair to those that have evolved along with the board. the sad fact is that Aggie, crippler, McNabb Should die and a lot of people from those days arent walking through the door to make it that way. I think most people would say that the evolution from a radio show board to more of a social board is a good thing and we shouldnt have to go back to the old ways because the old guard want it that way now
