It's next weekend. Who's going?
I'd go Friday, but the Neil Gaiman reading and auction starts at 6, and I don't even get off work until then, so I'll be there Saturday only.

I'm going on Sunday. There are a couple of video game panels my son wants to see. Looks like Saturday's going to be a busy day. Looks like a lot of good stuff.

I will be at the con all three days. I write a wrestling themed comic book called Headlocked from AAM/Markosia, that's received a bunch of really good reviews. (www.myspace.com/mike_kingston)
I'm sharing a small press table with some other creators (booth 2450) and that's where I'll be spending the majority of my time.
However, I'm also going to be a guest signer at the Comic Collector Live booth (booth 2504) on Saturday from 12-2PM.
I'll also be popping into the Markosia (my publisher's) booth at various times as well (booth 1756)
So if you're at the con, stop by and check out my book or just come and say hi!

I might do that. With the pope in town and the con itself, my usual parking spots will probably be taken, so the idea of taking the boat is appealing. Plus I can probably get some shots of the city heading in.
How do I buy tickets? I can't seem to buy one ticket online. (For the ferry, not the con)

You can't buy single-trip tickets online. Only monthly passes and 10-trip tickets.
For anyone else taking the Ferry, this is from the NY Waterway site:

If that's code for "he's gonna talk about how he looks EXACTLY like Palpatine from Star Wars" then, yes, yes he is.
Actually, there's really a panel that's discussing something similar. It's called "Our Gods Wear Spandex" and it starts at 5pm.

I think that it depends on which discussions, signings and contests you want to do. The ComicCon has the panel discussions listed in a PDF on their site. I printed it out this morning and still can't decide what I want to do ... mostly because I'm torn between seeing Stan Lee in real life and going to the "highlights" screening for Prince Caspian.
Also, if you didn't pre-purchase your tickets you might want to get there early. (As he's already mentioned, Jon missed the Buffy panel last year because he had to wait in line an hour before he got in.)

not sure if its been mentioned however Saturday (or is it today) there is supposed to be a "Confidental" WB gimmick happening sometime between 4 PM and 9 pm. Major speculation says it has something to do with The Dark Knight. One main reason being NYCC's site originally listed at 4 PM WB would be doing a Speed Racer/Dark Knight event in the theatre. 2 days after it was posted on their site it was replaced with confidential WB something or another. then was pulled all together. However NYCC has mentioned that TDK will have something at the event.
This may be spread into something larger with possible ties into the ongoing Dark Knight Alternate Reality Game, much like the San Diego Comic Con had last year. I am not positive about the ARG thing, but being that I have been following it, with all the recent events, chances are good but not guaranteed.
So keep an eye open if your interested

Part of the tease. Wife went up on the Prince Caspian panel, started with a 45 second preamble to her question, dropped the named "David Baker" and immediately got called out by the room filled with geeks. Without a doubt, seeing my wife fail for once is incredibly gratifying.

Are people still going tomorrow? If so, around what time are you getting there?
I ran into Jon, Liz and Matt and met Mr. Kingston and a few other writers who were fans of the show and I supported them. I think Jeff and Missy walked past me but I was trying to catch up with my friends and couldn't stop. I realized today that it's been a long time since I've done the "Disney Shuffle".
Got turned away from the panel area when I tried to go to the Robot Chicken and Quick Stop entertainment panels. The "volunteers" were getting physical with people and the state troopers were brought in and I got the fuck out of there.
My roommate wants me to go out to the San Diego Comicon, so who's in?

When did this happen? It was crowded but "chill" when I was there, but some Javits security guards (guys who run security for the actual venue, not ComicCon or Reed Expos) were giving me a bit of the evil eye.

I've been to a bunch of sci-fi themed events, mainly the Chiller cons up in East Rutherford, so I knew what to expect. Lots of colorful people, varying levels of hygiene, fat girl cleavage, and things that make you say "oooh."
The NYC Comic Con was the same thing on a much grander scale.
The morning started off with Liz and I debating taking the ferry in. I was doing the math in my head, and I realized that it's more expensive to take the ferry in when you figure in parking and fare vs. actually going into the city and knowing where to park. Liz was paranoid about Pope traffic, but we sailed right into the city and got parked.
We met up with Sheepy, and proceeded to get our passes. We were then cordoned into this huge holding area, with me feeling very uncomfortable with people hacking and wheezing around me.
Volunteers started tossing out free T-shirts and Batman figures while we were on line. I used my height to it's fullest advantage, knocking a figure out of the air and coming down with it, one-handed. I never cease to amaze even myself.
I walked around the floor a bit, and started to realize some things:
1) I'm too fucking old for this shit because I don't recognize half the stuff people are cosplaying in. What the fuck is a Gohan?
2) I've seen pics from the San Diego Comic Con and Wizard cons. There are some RIDICULOUSLY hot cosplayers there. Like, women who are so hot they open paysites.
NYC is the greatest city in the world. So where were the hot cosplayers? I even saw a few "Slave Leias" who were better suited to be Gammorean Guards. I'm all for girls wanting to dress hot, but know your limitations, please!
The Battlestar Galactica panel was pretty good.
I'll throw up some pics if you want to see, but it was pretty disappointing.
JustJon
04-19-2008, 07:54 PM
Gohan is Dragonball Z.
And it was a decent time. Saw Hosp, Sheepy, Fezzie, Earl, Jeff, Missy, and some other friends. Went to the tables for Big Kev, Comic Book Dennis, Mike Kingston, and Joe Caramanga (but Joe wasn't there). Because I had such a limited amount of time, I didn't hit a single panel, but did walk most of the floor.
And working on something special for RF.Net from a contact I made at the con... wait for it...

Going out Wednesday for Preview Night, and returning Saturday, so I'm not getting the FULL treatment, but still pretty good. All of the hotels downtown are officially sold out, but I was able to get into one 5 blocks from the Convention Center using Expedia.
I'm looking forward to it, but I know it will be sensory overload and I also am going to be "working" it a bit (film festival, DVD series, novel, tv show), so it might not be as fun (for me) as just hopping up to the comic con in Baltimore in September (hell, that's drunk, crazy talk...I'm going to have a blast!).

Had a much better time this year at the Con than I did at the first. May just have been the difference between a Saturday crowd and a Sunday crowd. So glad they used the big room for the exhibit floor. Lots more room to move about and tons of great stuff to see. Here are a few cosplay pics, nothing too exotic (I had my 11 year old with me) but I still felt like a dirty old man each time, "Excuse me Miss, quick picture?"
Anyone know who the guy doing the Reese's Pieces rap on the stage was? I recognized the moderator as one of the Newsarama Pulp Secret hosts but had no clue who he was interviewing (and the rap sucked).
Only picked up a couple of things, Vol 5 of Invincible (from the CBLDF booth, signed) and Secret Invasion #1. Got a couple of freebies though, autographed paperbacks and such and learned of a daily strip called which is actually funny and I think I'm going to order a trade or two.

OH MY GOD! YES! I SAW HIM! I almost choked because I was trying to stop from laughing at him loudly.
PERFECT example of fat people who cosplay who don't realize they don't look good.
Awww, let him be a hero...if just for one day.

Costume play. People who dress up in costume for events such as Comic Con. There are people who do it just for a goof, people who are really into it, people who do it to be sexy, and people who are so out of touch they do it and look really really bad.
Sometimes, the people who are into it really commit to it, and spend a lot of money to make their costumes look really accurate. THen there are others who don't realize how bad and how foolish they look.
Examples:
The woman who was too old to be Jubilee, wearing dishwashing gloves
The guy who was too fat to be Colossus
The kid who tried to be Nightwing but was just such a geek couldn't pull it off right
Fat/Ugly Slave Leias
There were some REALLY good outfits though...
I saw a great Ben Kenobi, a guy who was an awesome movie-version Reed Richards, a good Black Cat, a decent Indiana Jones costume (but as the guy was hispanic he couldn't pull it all the way off) and a few others.
I have to get my pics together.

Please tell me someone saw the guy on Saturday that was a huge pudgy guy that was dressed like collosus, with silver body paint and little red briefs? HILARIOUS!
I saw that guy, and made him stop, and had Sheepy try to take a pic of me w/ him and the camera pulled a FAILDOZER

What the heck is a cosplay????
Source: Wikipedia
Cosplay (コスプレ, kosupure?), short for "costume play",[1] is a Japanese subculture centered on dressing as characters from manga, anime, tokusatsu, and video games, and, less commonly, Japanese live action television shows, fantasy movies, Japanese pop music bands, Visual Kei, fantasy music stories (such as stories by the band Sound Horizon), and novels. However, in some circles, "cosplay" has been expanded to mean simply wearing a costume.
Anime Convention activity in the United States and Canada has become a much larger and much more popular trend in the 2000s. With the added public attention coming from such popular animated series imported from Japan (see anime) including Naruto, Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note, Inuyasha and Bleach, cosplayers and the anime world have peeked their heads into the world of mainstream pop-culture, on at least a relatively underground scale. More and more convention goers cosplay as their favorite characters from their favorite anime, and thus, the cosplay and anime subcultures have been able to have enough influence to further the creation of anime conventions to accommodate for the increasing number of cosplayers.
Conventions in America often include both cosplay and costume contests.[8] The cosplay or "masque" (masquerade) is a skit contest done in cosplay costume. The costume contest is often a test of skill, design, and audience reaction. The contestants are judged either before hand or on stage and then walk across said stage while the audience cheers. The increased popularity of convention costuming has led to the addition of several relatively new cosplay-based events, adding to the traditional masquerade and hall costume contests. Such events include the Anime Dating Game, and Cosplay Human Chess, where participating cosplayers act out their characters' role in the game accordingly.
Competition has led to the development of many cosplay groups that plan for conventions months in advance.
Non-competitive cosplay can often be seen at opening nights for science-fiction and fantasy movies, especially those with an established following. Even in small towns, some cosplayers wait in line for hours before showings of movies in franchises like Star Wars, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Even cult hits like Serenity have drawn opening night cosplay.
In the UK, US and elsewhere, fans of The Rocky Horror Picture Show attend screenings of the cult film in the costumes of its characters. This tradition began soon after the film's release in 1975.
The annual Bay to Breakers footrace in San Francisco has been a favorite cosplay venue for decades. A large number of cosplayers run or walk in their favorite costume amongst serious competitive runners.

Part of the tease. Wife went up on the Prince Caspian panel, started with a 45 second preamble to her question, dropped the named "David Baker" and immediately got called out by the room filled with geeks. Without a doubt, seeing my wife fail for once is incredibly gratifying.
You know what?
I asked you not to post that and you still did.
I didn't say "David" I actually said "Robert" ... who's a paleontologist, not an actor. And, because people in the theatre were so clueless, I got a crowd pop anyway. I love Tom Baker. He's my favorite Doctor from the original run. And I messed up his name ... crossed it with my favorite paleontologist.
After I sat down, I did a "D'oh! Fuck. It's not fucking 'Robert' it's 'Tom.' Shit." (Ask Joey. Now, you gloating about it just makes me sad.)
Remember what happened when I met Erin Grey? How I couldn't talk because I was so nervous? It was really like that. I was fucking shaking, so I'm surprised I was coherent.
Think about it. If you'd waited your entire life to have a chance to talk to Sir Peter Wolfsbane, you'd be nervous too. And you'd be bound to have a brain fart.

Soooooooo, it's OK for you to bash me when I make a bad call in to the Ron and Fez show, (and plenty of other times) but the ONE TIME I actually have one up on you and tease you about it, you get upset. See how the road goes both ways, dear?

The con went pretty good. It was huge this year as they increased the floor space yet again. The con will be the second biggest by next year I predict...
Since I spend most of my time pimping my book Headlocked, I don't really have time to check out the showroom floor as much as I'd like so you'll have to forgive me for a lack of any real detail. Most of the people I did meet happened to be walking through my aisles when I met them.
I'm not one to really geek out at conventions having only really ever geeked out at meeting Paul Chadwick in San Diego two years ago but this year was nuts...I met Chris Claremont (Uncanny back in the day is what made me a fan) Joe Kubert, Jason Aaron (Scalped is my favorite book right now) and Walt Simonson. Very cool...
In a cool bit of whatever, Dwayne McDuffie said he thought Headlocked was a really interesting concept and got a copy. Kind of neat to get props from one of the big guns..
Much love to Hosp and Jon for coming by to say hi and showing some support...I really appreciate it.
I did a lot of interviews with media and podcasts which is always fun as being the only wrestling type comic tends to get me some cred with the media for whatever reason. While I was doing my signing, a guy asked me to do an interview for his website and they had a camera and filmed it and while it was going on, a progressively larger crowd kept gathering as you could tell these people thought I must be someone. It was kind of amusing. After the interview was over a bunch of people bought books...
Next year, I'm going to have someone follow me around with a fake camera and microphone.
At night time, me and the Visionary guys hit up a bunch of the after parties and went to check out my friend Christian Berenak (Dracula vs. King Arthur, Se7en) play the guitar at a local club.
Its a good con and there is definitely a lot to see. They've really worked hard to make the con special and other areas/regions could really take a lesson from them. It was packed with comic book legends and they were all very approachable and nice for that matter.
As for the cosplay people, they're were a mixture...some good and some bad. My favorite was the demonic Elvis...Hellvis.
Oh yeah, and the highlight of the weekend.....

For some reason I forgot to even look at this board for this thread. I was working the con every day @ the Jim Hanley's Universe booth, and I would have LOVED to have met each and every one of you. I even had 40% off coupons I woulda given yas.
Hope you all had a good time. Bill Hader came by our booth and stayed for an hour or so....just hanging out. He's good friends with Ed Brubaker, and since we had HIM in for a signing on Mon, he wanted to check out the con booth. He was doing Pacino, Vincent Price, and that Italian dude the whole time. Not being a show off, but just having a good time. This year was defiantly better than last year, but next year looks to be even bigger. They are moving it back to Feb, and plan on expanding to one more part of the Javits center.
Come by our store on 33rd we still have a bunch of stuff signed from Bendis, Brubaker, Fraction,Pak, Slott, Cebulski, all from Monday, and we have a whole mess of New Frontier stuff signed from Darwyn Cooke on Wed. Tell em I sent ya and you can get the 40% coupon discount without having it.

Shame you missed me at the con. I did special signings at 3 different points over the weekend with Comic Collector Live and Markosia. I was also rocking my own booth in the small press section...
My next show will be Wizard World Philly where I'll be sharing a booth with indy wrestler Mike Quackenbush and the boys from Chikara.
After that, it's San Diego!

I was in that booth twice on saturday. And I'm at Jim Hanley's on a fairly regular basis. I might have to take advantage of that discount because I want to get all the Marvel Zombies stuff.

Quakenbush is good people, met him through a friend a few times. If my roommate comes back in for Philly I might hit that and she's still trying to talk me into San Diego. And congrats on getting Jerry Lawler to draw your next cover. If you can get a few of those signed by him I'd love to get one and I'm sure you can provide a few to the show for promotion.

Marvel Zombies series 1 was collected into 1 hardcover. 2 weeks ago, a second hardcover came out with one shot, the original story from Ultimate FF and a couple other side stories from other books. I'd say get those and snag the Marvel Zombies series 2 when it hits HC later this year.

Yeah, but there's also The Army of Darkness vs Marvel Zombies, and I was looking for a Trade Paperback, but I guess none of them have come out yet.

Oops, forgot that one. It's in a hardcover too
Marvel Zombies 1 is in like 4 or 5th printing of the hardcover (I dunno exactly, I just keep seeing it come out with a new dust jacket cover).
