And while you're at it, I think we SERIOUSLY need a list of NSFW words that can't be used in thread titles.
I'm not busting balls or being a wise ass.
I've learned "faggot" is NSFW, but surely you can understand my confusion when "fuck" "fucking" "cunt" and "shit" seem to be OK.
Is "fag" OK? What about "queer"?
Cocksucker?
Dickhead?
Douchebag?
Slut?
Whore?
MILF?
Twat?
I don't even want to get into racial slurs. Hell, we've got a member here called "SilentSpic." I hope he doesn't start a thread and land us all on the unemployment line and in sensitivity training.
Again, I'm not busting balls. I just think we need to know the rules if we're expected to play by them.
Much love to all,

Looks like Mod Gvac dropped the ball back in the day. SHAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMME.
But seriously, why is a list needed? This has been explain ad naseum at this point, and you're simply refusing to acknowledge that. Our thread titles show up in search engines. Posters on this board have always liked to be able to use the board while they're at work. Avoiding the use of racial/ethnic/sexuality slurs in the thread titles is simply an easy way to cut down on the risk of people getting into trouble for going to this site while at work. There's obviously a clear difference between those types of words and "regular" swear words and insults like the ones you keep insisting are on par with them.

Because, for whatever reason, they tend to not get people into as much trouble through this wonderful electronic medium that we all share. Again, if it's explicitly attacking race/ethnicity/sexual orientation in the thread title, we try to avoid that to keep the search engines based on thread titles reasonably SFW, since that's what seems to get people in the most trouble.

Common sense goes a long way, or I at least think it would. We've never been all that tolerant of overt racism on this board. That's just the character of the board. Racial humor is okay, but it can be a tough line to draw. Racial slurs in a thread title generally don't have enough context in and of themelves that they can be considered racial humor. Besides, permitting those slurs in thread titles makes this board look like a bunch of ass-backward racist. If someone visits this board and reads thread titles with racial slurs, that's the impression of the board as a whole that they'll get. Does anyone here really want to associate themselves with a board where "nigger", "spic", "wop", "chink" or "kike", etc. are prominently featured? I don't. Granted, there are some racial terms that may or may not reach the level of the ones above. For instance -- "mick" and "limey". I'll plead ignorance on those, because I don't really know how offensive those are considered to be. Likewise, as discussed on the show, there aren't any real offensive slurs applied to white people, so nobody gives a shit whether you start a thread with the word "cracker" in it. My point is that we're not going to draw a line as to which terms are appropriate in thread titles and which ones aren't. Try to use good judgment. If you think a term might be inappropriate, don't use it.
As an extension, "faggot" and "cunt" are two pretty loaded non-racial slurs, and are probably the most offensive terms you can use to label homosexuals and women respectively. There are less offensive terms that might be okay in a thread title, but really is it all that important to try to figure out which side of the line, for example, "bitch" and "queer" fall? "Fag" is probably less offensive than "faggot", but where does that fall in relation to the line? The lines fall in different places for different people.
Gvac brought up SilentSpic. That's the name he chose for himself, and he is of hispanic origin. In the future, if someone of a particular race signs up with a similar name, will we ask them to change it? Possibly. In the past, we've made members who have overtly racist names, especially when they are clearly intended to be racist ("Earl'saCoon" comes to mind), change their names.
The bottom line is that we are only talking about thread titles -- we're not talking about regulating the content of those threads. This isn't a freedom of speech issue (not that you have freedom of speech on a privately owned board anyway). We try to give our users lots of leeway in discussing the topics that come up. This simply applies to thread titles.
Keep in mind that it's really easy for people to judge this community based on the titles of threads alone, so try to use good judgment. Is this really that confusing? I just don't believe that it's as much of a slippery slope as some are portraying it.

How about 2 threads that are currently in circulation?
"Do you smoke fags???"
and
"Movie Assholes"
The first talks about cigarettes, although the term is in poor taste for US audiences. The second isn't a bad topic either, but the title isn't really appropriate for anybody reading at work.
For the sake of being SFW, why weren't these titles edited? The "fags" thread is just a shock title anyway. The movie thread could easily be made A-holes or "bunsholes" without changing the context.

The fags thread is questionable, but "Movie Assholes" - again it's not the seven dirty words, it's what's deemed "hate speech".
You can say "asshole" at work and people won't blink an eye. You say "Fag" at work or get caught reading a webpage that's entitled "faggots" and that's where the problem starts.

questionable, yet when used with its british meaning in mind, deemed ok
so...

Cunt is the harshest of the seven dirty words, and even in either of those contexts, I don't think it would be acceptable. But I work with a lot of women, so my judgment may be clouded. I rarely drop the c-word anyway, multiple usage is usually reserved for people who don't have any creativity or originality and just want to use shock to get attention.

Being able to use "asshole" at work really depends on WHERE you work. I would consider it NSFW, but I guess not everybody does.

yes, but universally, "faggot" and "cunt" is STRONGLY frowned upon in a white-collar office environment. The seven dirty words are "your mileage may vary", but you can absolutely not get away with saying "faggot" in 90% of America's mid-to-large business office environments. That was the point I was trying to make originally. Gvac took offense to that because he thought I was looking down on what he did for a living, but I also understand that the environment in an auto parts store and/or garage is HIGHLY different than a large company.

Yes, nobody missed that one. And nobody would get into trouble over that because if they were called out at work over it, a quick check of the actual thread shows there is nothing in that title or the initial subject of that is NSFW. Yes, context does make all the difference. It's a simple matter for someone to figure out the context of that word in that thread title.
and
"Movie Assholes"
The first talks about cigarettes, although the term is in poor taste for US audiences. The second isn't a bad topic either, but the title isn't really appropriate for anybody reading at work.
For the sake of being SFW, why weren't these titles edited? The "fags" thread is just a shock title anyway. The movie thread could easily be made A-holes or "bunsholes" without changing the context.
Look, honestly, after the spelled out reasonings Mikeyboy and I have given over this multiple times, you're just being willfully stubborn on the matter if you're offering up "asshole" as being comparable to what we are asking people keep out of the thread titles. Sure, some businesses might hae a zero tolerance policy in terms of web content, but we're not pushing for that. We're simply trying to use a very minor measure/request to keep the "big stuff" hopefully under the radar for people who want to use the site at work.
The board has evolved to a weird place to where now people want to screw over the work posters and are clamoring for shock posting. Did not see that coming.

Cocksucker?
Dickhead?
Douchebag?
Slut?
Whore?
MILF?
Twat?
What about the word "old"?
I think it works on multiple levels.

I think it works on multiple levels.
to some people, old means Learned and Experienced.
Wise, even.
but to the young, Old does not carry any value beyond Outdated and Elderly.
I am glad to be one of the old. For it affords me the luxury of absorbing the situation before I judge it.

Wisdom does not come with age.
That's why you're all acting like a bunch of fucking idiots.

if the actions of some veteran board members offend you so deeply, then why do you not just stop posting?
it seems a simple solution.

ENOUGH.
This was childish enough to start with.
