I've been comparing cable packages to satellite packages, and from what I see, I'd be getting more channels on DirecTV for the same price iO charges for fewer channels. My only fear is the dish issue... will bad weather legitimately fuck with my signal, or is that rare? Does anyone here have DirecTV? Do you recommend it? Or would you advise against it? Good stories? Horror stories? Lemme hear 'em!

I had DirectTV. Weather does occasionally mess with the signal, but only on the days with absolutely awful weather. I had difficulty about 3 times in the year I had the dish. My complaints were more about the customer service. I found them to be horribly rude and not very helpful. Once everything was in place we had little reason to contact them, but it left a really bad taste in our mouths.

We now have Fios as well. Quite the opposite there, I have found excellent customer service, and very few issues with the service. Biggest complaint I have is the limited number of HD channels at this point. They are promising to roll out a ton in the next year, but I am getting impatient. DirectTV on the other hand already has a bunch of HD channels.

i've had DirecTV for about 7 years now and love it. i've only had a handful of weather related issues and they only last a few minutes. as long as your dish has a clear view to the sky it should be limited problems. i know people with alot of trees surrounding them and they have problems in the wind. the only negative to me is the cost of an HD DVR, but its come down a bit and i think new subscribers get it free. you won't get a deal like with FIOS or the Triple Play Optimum thing, but you get more HD channels and i have it for the Sunday Ticket. all that said if FIOS got the NFL ticket also I would probably change just to save money.

Sweet, thanks for the feedback.

Here's the thing with DirecTV though. They want me to commit to a 2-year contract. So basically, if for whatever reason I don't like it, or I move to a building that doesn't allow a dish (my apt. lease is up in a year), I'm STUCK with DirecTV, or I have to pay a massive cancellation fee. From what I understand, cable is month-to-month, so if at any given point, I decide I don't want it, I can cancel it, no questions asked.

ive written it several times on this board so i dont wanna write it again. all im gonna say is this, even if thats your biggest concern please do yourself a favor and go with DirecTv. its far superior to anything else out there.

Sooo... BOTTOM LINE:

Should I pay a few bucks more for the reliability of cable and the flexibility to leave whenever I want?

I've had DirecTV for at least ten years and love it. Occasonlly, a big storm will roll in disrupting service for a few minutes but never very long. I'd honestly say that happens three or four times a year. They're also great about service. I had an issue a while back and they couldn't get a service man to me for three or four days. Before I could even say anything about the lead time the guy on the phone said they'd just go ahead and credit my HD service for a year which I believe is $10/month.
