Every year I miss out on this. Hopefully I will take part of this, this year.

All I have to do is find this phantom comic book shop people around here say there is.

Edit:

wow that phantom shop isn't even listed, however two did come up that are participating in this event.

You do realize that last year's free comic book day almost resulted in my brother Joe not showing up to my wedding. Stupid coincidences!

Matt & I had to give him the address of every store in the area that was participating before he stopped threatening to skip it.

This year my daughter is 4 so I'm gonna bring her with me. She will be carrying the bulk of my free comics. I'm thinking that I may even have my wife come in with my 2yr old son so they can carry a few too. We should be able to get outta there with at least 1 of everything unless the guys at the store want to see a little girl comfort her crying father.

Did he get a free Star Wars miniature figure with his comics?

I have no idea.

It was hard enough dealing with my mother AND my sister while we were getting our hair done that morning.

Free Comic Book Day Hits Saturday, May 3rd
A Big Day for a Booming Industry

New York, NY) April 25, 2008 -- May 3rd, the day after Paramount's Iron Man
hits theaters, thousands of comic book retailers across North America and around
the world will share the magic of comics with their customers when they distribute
millions of comic books free of charge during the seventh consecutive Free Comic Book Day.

Comic industry heavyweights Dark Horse Comics, DC Comics, Image Comics,
and Marvel Comics are among the many publishers and manufacturers
creating special titles for this year's Free Comic Book Day. The free books
appeal to a broad range of reader tastes, from exciting super-hero
adventures for all ages to cutting-edge graphic fiction for older, more mature
readers.

"We are thrilled to be a part of Free Comic Book Day for the seventh year in a
row", said Marvel President and Publisher Dan Buckley. "This is the best
opportunity retailers have to actually increase readers and customers to their
stores and each year has been more successful that the last. This event is
about celebrating creative expression and the unique art form it represents."

This years Free Comic Book Day is particularly special because it coincides
with two major comic-related happenings: the eagerly awaited opening
weekend of Paramount's Iron Man and National Cartoonists Day (a celebration
sponsored by the National Cartoonists Society, the world's largest and most
prestigious organization of professional cartoonists). All three events promise
to make this first weekend in May a memorable one for comic-lovers
everywhere.

To find a local store in your area and to learn more about Free Comic Book
Day go to http://www.freecomicbookday.com.

They're doing it again this year for those of you that either can't get to a local store, don't mind waiting, or both. Free Comic bundles for the cost of shipping and no purchase necessary.

I just got a shitload of free books. It was my first free comicbook day and I got there early. They gave out tons of back issues and old graphic novels that noone cares about for FREE. I got some Batman Elseworlds , Grendel, and Lobo books for nothing. I also got that Star Wars and Iron Man figure. There was some Star Wars guys dressed up and some local artists.

I got a bunch of stuff at Serious Comics in Massapequa, they were giving away so much stuff!
I didn't want to take too much because I know I won't read it; I haven't had time to do much reading lately. But they were real enthusiastic - I picked some stuff off the shelves for my kids because I felt I should pay for something and they ended up giving me a lot of that stuff for free also. Great place - if your in the area check it out!

We hit a couple of places already and we're in line at the Times Square Midtown Comics right now. I picked up a few things for myself, but we're mostly making the rounds for my daughter, who loves the kids' comics, and there are a bunch available this year.

Comics Warehouse in Nanuet, NY had 60% off all Trades and Hardcovers in honor of free comic day. I ended up dropping $100 between this week's new trades/hcs and old ones I wanted. Sale should be running all week, for those who want to go out there.

And I got a nice stack of the free books. Lots of kiddy stuff - Jughead, Tiny Titans, Nick Magazine, etc. - for my nephew, and some Hellboy, X-Men, etc. for myself. Forgot to ask about the toys.

Got lots o' stuff, including that little Iron Man figure thingy. We hit 4 stores in Manhattan, and I think, got all of the kids stuff, so I didn't have to bug Sheepy to see if his store had any of the free Gumby comic books.

My regular place, Fat Moose Comics in Whippany, decided not to support Free Comic Book Day. I didn't get a full explanation but apparently he felt he didn't get enough increased traffic to cover the participation requirements. So instead he had a 20%-off sale on anything except new books. Well, I was a little disappointed after making a special ride out there but still picked up some Astro City issues I was missing, Kirby 5-0 (nice book BTW - huge!), and my son got himself Star Wars:Knights of the Republic Vol. 3 trade.

Since I was smart enough to click on the FCBD banner at the top of the page before we headed out, I learned about 4 other stores in the area that were offering the free books and wound up heading over to FunnyBooks in Parsippany(98n beverwyck rd lake hiawatha nj) (http://www.funnyrama.com/). Guy's been there for 16 years and I never had a clue. Got all my freebies: X-Men, DC Universe 0, Bongo Comics and my son went home with Transformers, Shonen Jump, Sonic the Hedgehog, Marvel Adventures, The Wizard How To Draw book and a signed copy of the owners own self-published comic "Action Figure Kingdom". We also picked up Invincible Vol.6 for me and some Transformer Animated digests for him.

Altogether, spent about $100 trying to score some free stuff.

I own a rather large comic store in the Hudson Valley. This may have been the best free comic day we ever had. I usually buy a ton of stuff for the give aways, and have about half of if left that we give to schools for reading programs afterwards, this year nearly everything went. We had six books left! Just six out of thousands!
We also gave away two boxes each to three local area libraries that ran reading is fun programs in conjunction with free comic day. Several people from those events showed up at the store too.
This is always a fun day for those of us who run these things, and its good to see here that people enjoy the effort.

Now that I know where it's at, I'll be back. It's a great little shop.

Moose is on my way to work (and right down the street from JR Cigars, BTW, HI! TommyZ!) and that's how I found it. He's a little rough around the edges but always had a good selection of books, so who cared? Plus, I could get there and back on my lunch hour.

Hope to run into you at FunnyBooks some day.

What a bust. I'm sorry, Sheepy, that I didn't go to your shop. My chick lives in North Jersey and her regular shop (Fat Moose) and the other nearby place (some game store) didn't participate this year. I'm hoping my guy has some leftovers.

How did everyone else enjoy this year's FCBD?

Sure if anyone is interested I own The October Country, in New Paltz,NY. Its 2600 square feet and tons of back issues, including most of the last four months still on the racks at cover price. We have a lot of people make monthly trips from Jersey, Conn, Penn and Mass.
If this isnt allowed feel free to dump it.
I myself am there on Friday afternoons. The rest of the week its hit or miss.
Every one who works for me tho loves comics in one form or another,so there is lots of help if you need it. Or just someone good to talk to about your hobby if thats what your looking for.
