I love the Olympics for the sports and not for the politics. I can't wait for the games and hope we do well versus the world. Sadly, this has not been a great beginning to the games in Beijing.
Watching the protesters in San Francisco and Paris makes me laugh. Do these so-called Peace Loving types honestly think that the freedom in Tibet will come though peaceful means? These are the same people who are trying to convince the world that Mommy's SUV is the reason we have global warming. I bet if you ask the same group of people to explain the most basic definitions of weather, (4-season, tides and clouds, etc...) you would be met with blank looks and mouth breathing. So if these people aren't experts on weather, why should we listen to anything they claim about Global Warming?
Similarly; why would a so-called peace loving 'activist' know what he/she is talking about when discussing Tibet?

I respect and see the value of protest but c'mon........leave the olympics and more importantly the people who are carrying the torch alone.

The games will be great and I hope we do well.

Chinese scientists began researching weather manipulation and control as far back as 1958, using chemicals like silver iodide to bring about condensation in moisture-laden clouds.

China’s weather officials have been charged the important task os ensuring clear skies for the Summer Olympic Games next year.

Zhang Qiang, the top weather-modification official in Beijing, said her office has been conducting experiments in cloud-busting for the past two years in preparation for the Games’ opening ceremony on August 8, 2008.

According to past meteorological data, there is a 50% chance of rain or drizzle on that day. To ensure blue skies, the Beijing Weather Modification Office is busy researching the effects of various chemical activators on different sizes of cloud formations at different altitudes. The aim is to catch pregnant clouds early and induce rainfall ahead of the big day so that during the opening ceremony the sky is cloud free.

Artificial rain created through weather modification is not controversy-free even within China. City dwellers have raised concerns about environmental pollution, though both Wang and Zhang insist that silver iodide is used in such tiny quantities that it brings no negative health consequences.

i understand that a car emits harmful chemicals into the environment, but just shooting harmful chemicals into the air HAS GOT to be worse

China has built some of the ugliest shit ever. The "Birds Nest" is fuckin HIDEIOUS and the rowing thing they built is just stupid. You guys dont have a fuckin river? You have to build this retarded thing in a dry flat and take away all your people's water to flood this area and have canoe races? The only thing that looks remotely cool is the Water Cube and its retarded once you think about how they did all that work and spent all that just to have this building house swimming pools? Are you fuckin kidding?

I'm a bigger fan of the Winter Olympics but I still get jazzed about the Summer games. As a heterosexual male I never really got too into the Gymnastics competition until the Atlanta games in '96. My first summer home from College, I spent them working on the Delaware, drinking and smoking lots of grass. I became mesmerized by the gymnasts. Although I was also mesmerized by a giant talking locust and 60's cartoon superhero with a talk show, so I don't know how much credibility I have.

The Blue color of the Water cube and the sheer size and shape makes it the more male type building. The public as well as the government have sided in that this is the better have to the birds nest (which is the more feminine building). This centre is also called the masculine building of the 2008 Olympics. While the Birds nest is building that is a first of its type in the world, it is considered the female building of all the projects. When they are completed in 2007 the government hopes to run full scale tests to make sure the buildings hold there own. And when they are completed the Birds Nest and the Water Cube will represent China as a whole like no other buildings have before in Chinas' history. These historical buildings will draw more attention than the great wall of China, and makes it seem out of date to the public.
what does this mean?

BEIJING (AP) -- A knife-wielding Chinese man attacked two relatives of a coach for the U.S. Olympic men's volleyball team at a tourist site in Beijing, killing one and injuring the other on the first day of the Olympics on Saturday, team officials and state media said.

The man then committed suicide by throwing himself from the second story of the site, the 13th century Drum Tower just five miles from the main Olympics site.

The brutal attack shortly after midday was all the more shocking because of the rarity of violent crime against foreigners in tightly controlled China, which has ramped up security measures even more for the Olympics.

The stabbing came only hours after what by many accounts was the most spectacular opening ceremony in Olympic history and it has already dampened some of the enthusiasm.

"They are deeply saddened and shocked," Darryl Seibel, a spokesman for the U.S. Olympic Committee, said of the volleyball team.

The U.S. Olympic Committee said in a statement that two family members of a coach for the men's indoor volleyball team were stabbed at the Drum Tower "during an attack by what local law enforcement authorities have indicated was a lone assailant."

One of the family members was killed and the other was seriously injured, it said, without giving details.

The official Xinhua News Agency identified the attacker as Tang Yongming, 47, from the eastern city of Hangzhou. It said Tang attacked the two Americans and their Chinese tour guide, who was also injured, at 12:20 p.m. on the second level of the ancient tower, then leapt to his death immediately afterward. The second level of the tower is about 130 feet high.

Seibel said the two Americans who were attacked were not wearing anything that would have identified them as Americans or part of the U.S. team. He could not name the coach.

"They were not wearing apparel or anything that would have specifically identified them as being members of our delegation" or as Americans, he told The Associated Press.

He said it is "too early to say" whether the U.S. delegation or athletes will require additional security.

U.S. Embassy spokesman Richard Buangan said it was aware of an incident involving two Americans and was working with Chinese authorities to find out more. He said U.S. officials were in contact with relatives of the two Americans who are in Beijing.

"Out of respect for the families involved, we can't say more than that," Don Q. Washington, another embassy spokesman, told reporters.

Police blocked off streets leading to the Drum Tower immediately after the attack and cordoned off the area with yellow police tape. Security officers were examining the scene on the tower and below.

Attacks on foreigners in China are extremely rare. A Canadian model was murdered last month in Shanghai, but police said that was because she stumbled onto a burglary.

In March, a screaming, bomb-strapped hostage-taker who commandeered a bus with 10 Australians aboard in the popular tourist city of Xi'an was shot to death by a police sniper.

Shanghai and Beijing are still safer than most foreign cities of their size. Punishments for crimes against foreigners are heavier than for crimes against Chinese, and police-linked neighborhood watch groups are highly vigilant. Chinese are not allowed to own guns.

Even so, the U.S. government now warns Americans against muggings, beatings and even carjackings, especially in the nightlife and shopping districts of large cities.

Built in the 13th century, the Drum Tower is one of the few ancient structures still in Beijing, and was used to tell time in imperial China for the city, using drummers who pounded their instruments to mark the hours. It is located on an important central axis of the city, to the north of the Forbidden City, the former home of the emperor.

The White House said President Bush, who is in Beijing for the opening days of the games, was informed of the incident, and his heart goes out to the families of the victims. It said the administration and the Beijing U.S. embassy have offered those families any assistance they need. Also, U.S. officials have been speaking to Chinese authorities about the incident.

International Olympic Committee spokeswoman Emmanuelle Moreau said in a statement that the committee had received reports of the attack and was in contact with Beijing Games organizers "to find out full details, and are ready to provide whatever assistance we can."

I love the Olympics. I watched a lot in '04.

The way I understand it is that MSNBC will show all the soccer matches and USA with show the basketball games (excluding the American ones, which I assume will be on NBC).

Now this just may be my cable company, but Universal HD has the high def coverage of MSNBC for the Olympics, and MOJO+ has the high def coverage of USA (I'm sure this one is different on different carriers, though, as I know some markets have a USA HD channel).

CNBC will cover boxing, I think.

And then they'll all jump around periodically.

Not sure if BRAVO will pick up coverage. They did last time, but I don't see anything scheduled yet.

Beach Volleyball on MSNBC!!!!

I was at Athes 04....couldnt get tix for the US mens basketball, so had to settle for beach volleyball.....turned out to be one of the best days of my 3 week trip.....

the hottest cheerleaders in small bikini's, tall dutch women jumpin in the sand, a dj pumpin hot beats, and the crowd was just insane. Great vibe....more like a party atmosphere than a competitive thing.....

Other than maybe stepping out to hit a few baseballs later today, I might pull straight through tonight with the Olympics.

Damn, I love these Russians....fuck Georgia...let them have it.

Aussies came storming back to win the third set in beach volleyball and the match. That was a great match. Apparently it was the first time the Russian had ever entered a beach volleyball team, but they did pretty well.

The funny thing about it, is that I think Georgia has a beach volleyball team in the same Pool as they do.

It'll be interesting to see what happens if they play each other. I wonder if they'll pull a Iran/Israel and refuse to play.

They're are black (although by now, there may be a Black/Spanish mix). Cuba and Haiti were under Spanish and French control and partook in the slave trade in the 17th and 18th Centuries.

Well, Team USA put a beatdown on China.

Australia/Argentina soccer on USA
Water Polo on MSNBC...love the water polo.

Lithuania/Argentina basketball game on Telemundo.

It looks pretty obvious that the US, Spain, and Greece will be three of the four that advance from Group B to the Semis. I imagine the last spot will come down to China vs. Germany. Angola blows.

I have no clue who the four out of Group A will be. Lithuania and Argentina should be both be in there, and I would think Australia as well.

I don't know anything about Croatia or Russia in terms of basketball, and I had no clue Iran even had a basketball team.

Finally was able to watch the opening ceremonies, found a BBC HD Sport torrent, so I got to see some of the missing content cut out of the NBC broadcast, like the footsteps across Beijing in fireworks, the puppet show, and some other stuff.

It was pretty amazing all the way through, the drummers at the start were crazy to watch on the big screen and the moving boxes were also very well done, how they timed all that was incredible.

I dont see how any other ceremony after this could ever be as epic. They need to take this one on tour, they would see out stadiums across to world of people wanting to see it in person.

The people who watch Olympics are mostly people who have spent a significant amount of time playing or following one particular Olympic sport. When else do you get to see devoted coverage to every major competitive sport in the world?

And to put shit down because beach volleyball is involved? These are established world sports.

The whole point of the games is so that every country in the world, no matter how much we fucking hate each other, can get together and have some fun through sports. Watching it makes me want to try a lot of this different stuff, though. Me and a buddy are already trying to figure out how we can put together an olympic style handball team. That sport rules.

But mostly, I just watch for the international flavor, and because you really do get a myriad of amazing athletic achievements that you really never see in the down time between Olympics.

Now it's just prepackaged facials for Friday.

You just don't get that with the Olympics. You USED to, pre Dick Ebersol, but not anymore.

You do realize they're streaming like every second of all the events online?

All the good athletes have jumped/swam over here already (will someone please forward this to the bad jokes thread? Thanks).

Then I guess the answer is no, because the American gymnasts suck this year, too.
We need to annex Cuba for 2012.

Holy shit...what a race!

Katie Hoff had to have lost that in the last tenth of a second. What an effort, though.

The Italian they were hyping didn't even medal.

00.07 difference!

How do they judge who touches the wall of the swimming pool first?
The women just had a race where the top 6 of 8 where within a second...all measured in
100ths of a second...thats crazy!!
You cant really see under water.

The Americans name was HOFF i think...she was devastated losing GoLD by 7/100 of a second.

I think they have spotters...not sure if there's something in the pool that picks up the touch as well.

She did lose, though. You could see the British chick just get in on the replay.

Team USA won that last race by 8/100ths of a second...some great races to close the night.

That race kicked ass. Not only did it prove that black people can swim, but that the French should never cross the Americans.
