Actually, I think most people are in your boat, and are skeptical of all Olympic athletes, because international competitions have such a history of doping scandals.

I've always been of the mind, though, that until something is proven, I give the athletes the benefit of the doubt.

Any thing that could be touted as a 'great accomplishment' these days is met with ridiculous scrutiny from all sorts of different avenues.

Former Auburn swimmers won three more medals tonight in two different events, including two gold medals.

Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry was first to pick up a gold medal as she took first in the 200-meter backstroke with a world record time of 2:05.24, becoming the first swimmer ever to break 2:06 in the event. Her former teammate, Margaret Hoelzer (United States), followed right behind her in second place, earning the silver medal with a time of 2:06.23.

Thirty minutes later, Brazilian native Cesar Cielo earned Auburn's second gold medal as he posted an Olympic record time of 21.30 in the 50m freestyle.

Coventry has seven career Olympic medals.

The medal is the 10th for Auburn in the 2008 Olympics and the second gold medal of the Games. Auburn now holds the lead among American colleges and universities for medals won in Beijing. Second on the list is California-Berkeley with nine medals and Florida with six medals.

If Auburn were its own country, it would currently rank 10th in the medal count with 10 medals so far. The United States leads with 48, followed by China (41), Australia (21), France (20), Russia (19), Korea (18), Italy (15), Japan (14) and Germany (14).

Auburn has a chance for three more medals Saturday night as the 400m medley relays are contested.

But it's impossible to say if he is the greatest Olympian ever. He has the most gold medals, sure, but it's impossible to compare swimmers to athletes in other disciplines. There are 17 swimming events at the Olympics. Phelps failed to win more than half - he simply didn't race in them. On the other hand, Wrestlers or Boxers have but one chance to win a medal. They can't enter multiple weight classes, nor are there different styles.

Teófilo Stevenson won 3 consecutive Olympics. For 12 years, he was the greatest amateur heavyweight boxer in the world. But that's just a pitiful 3 gold medals, what are they, compared to Phelps' 14?



The simple fact is that swimming is the only event that allows for such a haul in medals. In gymnastics you are limited to 6 - the team event, the invividual all-around, and the 4 individual events.

Phelps might be the greatest Olympian ever, but we'll never know. And really, who cares? The guy's amazing.

I watched the 100 meter men's final last night and though the Jamaican, Usain Bolt, is the fastest man ever and set a new world record...he slowed up at the end to showboat. It was the dumbest thing I've ever seen. He pulled up with about 15 meters to go, pointed at the field, then banged his chest right before he crossed the finish line.

He could've taken even more time off the clock but he sacrificed a better time to showboat like an ass.

And those type olympic events, like snowboard, are new and so far havent been judged well at the olympics. Yet at X Games, i cant recall the judges ever not being on point. I've noticed that they will only use the LIVE graphic when showing the big events. They had it up there during swimming, gymnastics and the track and field heats that they aired live. The smaller events, like softball, boxing and indoor volleyball will be shown live without the graphic so that other recorded stuff seems live.
