did anyone watch the mens cycling road race live online?

it was amazing, no commentary, just the live video feed from the motorcycles that follow the race.

if you have ever been on a long road ride you would have loved it, the tranquility of no broadcasters babbling away and the incredible scenery, and just the sounds of the bikes...

good stuff.

Only caught the TV bits, although I wanted to see some of it, because it's a great chance to view Beijing.

I think I"m going to browse some of the live online events before going to sleep tonight.

Aw Man! Now I'm Gay AND Unamerican?!

I have lost control of the storyline.

For the record, I'm very proud of our American men for winning a thrilling 4 x 100 free relay gold medal.

And that gold medal was brought to you by McDonalds.

(KC, I was not aware that you could watch things live online. That is pretty damn cool)

Before I played basketball I swam the IM for my high school team, and I've done triathlons. I love watching live sporting events, especially sports that don't get a lot of coverage the rest of the year like wrestling, swimming and track and field.

You just don't get that with the Olympics. You USED to, pre Dick Ebersol, but not anymore.

Now it's just prepackaged facials for Friday.
:bye:

Funny, yesterday I turned on the tv and watched Water Polo, badminton, and team archery. But I guess those are sports that get a lot of coverage the rest of the year?????

That could have been the greatest race I have ever seen! I swam in High School, so Olympic swimming has been my favorite thing to watch for decades.

I could barely sleep afterwards, I was so excited. Jason Lezak swam masterfully, drafting off of Bernard like a truck on the highway. It was beautiful!

The only bummer I have is that this morning all of the hype is around Phelps and that he has 2 of an 8 possible gold, when they should be lauding Lezak for his amazing swim.

Actually, I think Lezak has been getting some decent recognition. Not as much as he probably deserves, but he's gotten some solid coverage considering how little the U.S. media knows/cares about swimming.

But I have to admit, it bothered me a little when I went to CBS Sportsline this morning and saw the headline 'Phelps gets help.'

Talk about burying the lead...Lezak swam the fastest leg EVER!

That's what I am talking about; within the stories Lezak is often credited, but the lead is something like "Phleps Wins Again." Not that the new World Record was shattered, Lezak swam the fastest split in history, or that the US took back the 400 Relay Gold after loosing in the last 2 Olympics, but that Phelps now has 2 Gold Medals on his way to 8.

I agree that Phelps is amazing and deserves accolades for his ability, but he was only a small part of the equation in this instance. It was a Team win and they won because Jason Lezak swam an unbelievable race.

It may not be fair, but what is the lead that is going to appeal to the large, unwashed masses of the American public? Face it, it's the Phelps story. Lezak's leg, unbelievable as it was, and unforgettable to those who saw it, will be a footnote to the Ichiban.

It's just like that Kerri Strug story...no one remembers that she didn't even need that vault for the team to win gold.

Anyway, NBC's excuse to show some women's volleyball asses: http://www.nbcolympics.com/beachvolleyball/photos/galleryid=122861.html

Anyone else on DirecTV? I love the additional coverage, but it's absolutely impossible to record anything specific, or to know what is on what channel from the descriptions.

This is the shit I get...

Channel: 756 Air Time: 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Basketball, Water Polo, Handball, Volleyball (Cont'd) NR (Not Rated)
From Beijing. Basketball, women's: Australia vs. Brazil; water polo, women's: Russia vs. Italy; handball, women's: South Korea vs. Germany; volleyball, women's: China vs. Poland; badminton, men's: USA match; weightlifting; tennis.

Wanna watch or record one of these events? You gotta record the whole 8 hour block.

What's on right now? One of the above. Gotta flip to it to find out.

It seems like during the last winter olympics they aired specific events, in a specific block of time. You could set up your DVR to record all showings of a specific event.

Compared to having ONE channel and a VCR in the past, I'm not complaining. But you'd think that DirecTV would be able to say shit like:

Channel: 756 - 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM - Basketball, women's: Australia vs. Brazil
Channel: 756 - 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM - Water polo, women's: Russia vs. Italy
Channel: 756 - 11:00 PM - 12:00 PM - Handball, women's: South Korea vs. Germany
Channel: 756 - 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM - Volleyball, women's: China vs. Poland.
Channel: 756 - 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM - Badminton, men's: USA match
Channel: 756 - 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM - Weightlifting; tennis.
Channel: 756 - 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM - Tennis.

Just seems lazy to me.

3 Things I have noticed so far in this Olympics...

1. Team Handball looks like the easiest sport ever created. I'm not kidding, have you seen it ?
2. That guy Jason Lezak's torso was almost completely out of the water when he caught that French shit-talker from behind in the mens 4X100 swimming relay.
3. I just watched a boxer from Ghana named, Prince Octopus Dzanie get his ass handed to him by a Cuban in a featherweight boxing match. Prince Octopus Dzanie is the best name for anyone, I have ever heard.

This is the best Summer Olympics Ever!!!!

Judging from all the world records that have been shattered (has anyone won a race in these Olympics yet without setting a world record?), I'd say that's true.

Nice job by Rebecca Soni, but Leisel Jones owns that race.

USA has the overall medal count lead for the time being.

Softball prelims started this morning in Beijing. USA plays about midnight our time. It'd be nice if they put it on live somewhere other than the online stream. This could very well be the last year for softball in the Olympics.

I thought they were challenging the ruling on it being ousted in the 2012 games.

There'll be another vote in either late '09 or early '10 to finalize the competitions, I believe.

No one is really sure though if they have the votes to get it back on.

IOC playing hardball with future of softball
Jim Byers
August 08, 2008

BEIJING–When the Canadian softball team takes to the field next week, they won't simply be trying to win a medal.

They'll be trying to save their sport.

The IOC three years ago unceremoniously dumped softball and baseball from the Olympics, telling them they could take part at the Beijing Games but were off the agenda for 2012 unless they could prove themselves worthy.

Both sports, as well as golf and others eagerly trying to push their way on to the Olympic stage, are gearing up for an IOC vote in the fall of 2009.

Softball supporters have formed a group called Back Softball, and International Softball Federation Don Porter has been building up his air miles as he chases IOC voters around the world.

"We're working to make the sport really global," said Canadian outfielder Alison Bradley of Pinkerton, Ont. "Back Softball has made a lot of headway with rule changes. There's now a tie-breaker, so after seven innings if there's a tie we put a runner on second base to start the next inning. It's like a leadoff double to encourage scoring."

Bradley said there will be plenty of petitions sent to the marbled halls of the IOC in Lausanne, Switzerland, between now and next year's vote.

"We think we have the support (to be reinstated) but we're working harder than ever," he told the Star between handshakes and slaps on the back at the Beijing Hotel, temporary home for IOC voters in town for these Summer Olympics. "We're growing the sport, with more countries and more kids playing than ever."

Porter is optimistic, but can't seem to escape a gnawing feeling.

"There's something missing in our sport ... I really don't know what it is, but we're working on it. We've made changes. We moved the pitchers' mound back a few years ago and we've put a 20-second clock on the pitchers.

"We've heard complaints about too many strikeouts and too many no-hitters, and we're working on those."

They also have heard the complaints there simply aren't enough nations on the planet that give a hoot about the game. With the U.S. constantly dominating, it's easy for other countries to shrug at the idea of Olympic softball.

This, despite the fact that, according to the IOC's Olympic News Service, softball was invented in 1887 when someone indoors played a game with a broomstick for a bat and a boxing glove for a ball.

The sport was first included in the Olympics at the Atlanta Games in 1996 and the Americans have won all three golds. But that could change soon, according to Whitby third baseman Erin McLean.

"I think for the first time any of the top teams could win," she said. "I really believe that. I think this will be the best competition ever. And I think that could help save softball.

"There has been a big push in Europe. I think there's going to be a changing of the guard."

Nothing would please softball supporters more than to see a Canadian hoisting the trophy.

Or, better yet, someone from outside North America such as Japan, which has a good squad here. The IOC can be a tough nut to crack, and the more they can broaden the sport's appeal beyond its traditional markets the better off they'll be.

Back Softball and ISF is trying to teach the game to more players and have launched a page on the popular Facebook website. That can't hurt, but there was one IOC member on TV the other day explaining that he doesn't even know how email works, so Porter still has some work ahead of him.

"It all ends up with the majority vote, whether you're one over or 10 or 20 over," Porter told Florida Today recently. "That's the goal we have, and we're going to be working with individual IOC members to try to make sure they understand our sport, because we know there are a number of IOC members who are not familiar with our sport."

Softball supporters have enlisted former American swimming star Donna De Varona to help lobby for their sport. They also have received help from former IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch and 1984 Los Angeles Olympic organizer Peter Ueberroth.

"We've had a lot of positive feedback, but, you know, these (IOC) members are getting pressure from every side, from bidding cities to sports federations, so it's hard to find out what's really going on," De Varona said. "From people I know well, they've said that they've been impressed with our work so far, and we have another year to go.

"We're going to be very aggressive."

I would say baseball is completely dead...nobody cares about saving it but Cuba. It'll be interesting to see how it shakes out.

I like Jennie Finch, too.

Although, I hate it every time some ESPN douchebag floats the idea that Jennie Finch throwing 60 MPH underhand is the equivalent of a Major Leaguer throwing 95 MPH (and if Favre was throwing a baseball instead of a football, he'd throw 640 MPH).

It's ridiculous....if Jennie Finch could throw 95 MPH, she'd be on the Dodgers. Yet someone will keep reviving that stupid argument.

That said...she's great.

This could be a mercy rule game by the 5th. Venezuela looks lost. That's part of the problem with the Olympic committee and softball, I think...the USA destroys everyone.

what theyre really talking about isn't the fact that Finch herself could throw 95 mph, theyre saying it appears just like a 95 mph heater would for a batter in the box.

I know this question has been asked a million times, but I've never heard a real answer to it. Why is it called softball? Yeah, yeah, I know. It hurts more to get hit by a baseball, but it's still not soft. I'll hang up and listen to your answer.

I used to go to a lot of women's sports when I was a kid.

Down at the University of Delaware, they hosted their conference's basketball tournament like eight years in a row, so we'd go down and buy a ticket for like $10 and watch seven or eight hours of games.

And then the softball and other stuff just kind of stuck from high school and hanging around after classes watching some different things every so often.

So I can get into a lot of it.

About the only thing I can't watch, for whatever reason, is the WNBA.

...anyway, I think it's because the ball is softer, and it's a softer toss than pitching a baseball...and maybe watching the ample breasts on some of those broads conjures the word 'soft'??

Friday

...anyway, I think it's because the ball is softer

that would be my first answer too... the ball is larger and does have a cushion around the outside. but TRUST ME... being hit by one of these hurts just as much as a baseball!!
and the .net teams can attest to my fat bottom lip as proof of this on our game day. *sigh*

but many softball pitchers can beat speeds of 95mph... so i don't think it's the pitch speed!

here is some more info:

First of all, why are these millions of people involved in softball, not baseball? Is it just a substitute for baseball or is there a difference? John Kralik replies, "...[Baseball] can't adapt to the age groups without corrupting the game. Softball can and does" (Kralik). Megan Flaherty, 18, says that unlike baseball, softball is "not all about raw strength. You must think about what to do and when to do it. Out-of-the-park homeruns won't occur too often so you have to rely on other methods of getting around the bases quickly" (Flaherty). Londa Kauffman feels that softball is much faster and more exciting than baseball (Kauffman). More specifically, Dave Davis, an ASA umpire, says, "I grew up loving baseball in an era before sports became a big business. Labor strife and big egos have gone a long way to taint my view of the Major Leagues. I have found that sports are played more intensely on the amateur level. I also believe that in most cases, the fastpitch softball games are more exciting to watch than baseball. The rules are similar, to be sure, but the smaller dimensions seem to add to the action" (Davis).

Once a person chooses to become involved in fastpitch softball, the sport must have some priority to him

That brings up another question. Who started playing softball first? Men or women?

Men.

Softball originated in Chicago on Thanksgiving Day, 1887. A group of about twenty young men had gathered in the gymnasium of the Farragut Boat Club in order to hear the outcome of the Harvard-Yale football game. After Yale's victory was announced and bets were paid off, a man picked up a stray boxing glove and threw it at someone, who hit it with a pole. George Hancock, usually considered the inventor of softball, shouted, "Let's play ball!" He tied the boxing glove so that it resembled a ball, chalked out a diamond on the floor (smaller dimensions than those of a baseball field in order to fit the gym) and broke off a broom handle to serve as a bat. What proceeded was an odd, smaller version of baseball. That game is now, 111 years later, known as the first softball game.

looks like the pitching was relatively slow up until the late 1930's.
after that, fast pitch rose in popularity....

but i think the name originated from the first game.... the boxing glove rolled up.

now... calling it softball is kind of funny when you play it and see just how insanely competitive it is.
btw...my lip healed from .net... and my leg healed from diving for a ball in the WB game.... i am such a softball dike.

But at least you got to hear the coaching wisdom of one of the all-time softball greats, Earl Douglas, in that .Net game, and his legendary 100 foot home run that got lost in a cornfield or whatever the hell he was talking about.

I'm still clinging to baseball a few times a week, until I eventually do some horrific damage to my body to stop me.

So far, so good...just some scraps and bruises mostly from laying out for a few balls.

That's really not a huge deal. There are a ton of shows that add pre-recorded content, and imagine the cost to the networks if they had to film every second of every angle, deal with weather problems, camera problems, satellite feeds, etc.

It makes sense to sweeten the production a little if there is time (as there was due to the time difference).

I (personally) will cut China some slack on this point.

No way the Olympics would turn down all those big names, from so many different countries.

It'll never happen, though, unless they move baseball to the Winter Olympics.

MLB basically killed any shot of that when they started the Baseball World Classic, too.

There's just way too many second-rate teams internationally at the Olympics. Cuba is the only team that plays at full strength, and I think Japan sends the top two players from each team in their professional league, but can't get their MLBers. That's basically it.

The US team this year will be solid, as they've got some pretty good minor league prospects on the team, but there's just not the star power or competition there would be with the U.S. and the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela, and even a country like Australia which has a lot of minor league baseball players right now, if they had the Major Leaguers.

The Baseball Classic last time around was actually pretty good, though.

I'm so annoyed that I keep hearing "U.S. leads in Medal Count", what does this even mean? If you look at how ESPN ranks the countries, they just count the medals and I've seen this almost everywhere else. I've NEVER seen a scoring system where Gold (1st place) has the same weight as Silver (2nd place) or Bronze (3rd place). The best way to judge which country is doing best would be to give points to each medal, then calculate who's winning. Gold should be worth 3 points, silver 2 points and bronze 1 point.

Here's the current breakdown on ESPN.com:

I'm so annoyed that I keep hearing "U.S. leads in Medal Count", what does this even mean? If you look at how ESPN ranks the countries, they just count the medals and I've seen this almost everywhere else. I've NEVER seen a scoring system where Gold (1st place) has the same weight as Silver (2nd place) or Bronze (3rd place). The best way to judge which country is doing best would be to give points to each medal, then calculate who's winning. Gold should be worth 3 points, silver 2 points and bronze 1 point.

Here's the current breakdown on ESPN.com:
http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/summer08/medals

I agree to an extent, although I would change the point value:

Gold = 196.967 points

Silver = 107.868 points

Bronze = 63.546 or 118.710 points, depending on the event.

You can see stuff like that coming a mile away with weightlifting, though. Like I said a few days ago, the chick from Taiwan was seconds away from pretty much crushing herself with the weight.

She actually bounced it off her leg, but I guess it was done at an angle where she didn't bear the brunt of the weight.

Ron was talking today about how Russia isn't as competitive in recent years, but that is partly because of the breakup of the Soviet Union. If you add up all the medals for former Soviet Republics, they would have 33 - more than China or USA right now. And Nastia Liukin - the American gymnast would have been on the Russian gymnastics team.

Also, it is partly due to the destruction of the Russian sports infrastructure in the 90s. There were simply no state funds to support the programs that the Soviet Union had. Now it's a different matter, so I would expect a resurgence of Russian athletes in the next 10-15 years.

Oh man, I just started watching stuff on NBC Olympics.com, jesus, the site has fucking everything. And even if you miss something, they have everything recorded. I was watching a five hour pre-recorded feed of women's badminton doubles. Right now, I'm watching Greco-Roman wrestling live, I just watched Adam Wheeler of the US come back to beat the chinaman he was facing.

You can set the option for running text commentary, or you can watch the Control Room, where you can have 4 feeds at once. Great for wrestling, I can watch who's wrestling on each mat, and then watch some table tennis on the fourth feed.

US surged back into the medal count lead today.

Now leading China 43-36.

China still leads in overall golds, 22-14

China was predicted to win the overall golds by a lot, and edge the US in the medal count going in.

They're probably still in a pretty strong position to do so, but the US really exceeded a lot of expectations this year, so the overall count should be interesting.

If you've heard him talk, he's obsessed with getting more and more calories in his diet. I guess when you swim pretty much all day, every day, you need everything you can get.

Pretty much all of his post-race interviews with Andrea Kramer during this thing begin with, "Well, I'm going to just go back and put more calories in me, and relax."

i swear you can see cavic touch first, we talked about it the other day - is it spotters or electronic timing?

that was out of control man, unbelievable.

i hope it isnt controversial, did they show a slo-mo close-up?

its the wall. The shit is in the wall and knows when the touch happens

It's touch.

No spotter would have gotten that correct. Cavic took too much time on that last stroke. Cavic was at the wall first, but Phelps lunged for it and got his hand in.

It'll look like Cavic every time you watch the replay, because he SHOULD have won. Phelps snuck in with that lunge.

if it was spotters, he would have lost.

it is electronic, and even though i saw it in slow mo, i can barely believe it

They were talking in the match earlier about how he's run off several teammates with his sheer douche-itude.

Yeah, that was actually a great match, I forgot about it in the Phelps hysteria.

US came back down 6-0 in the final set.

Well, Mark Spitz will be up to piss all over this thing, shortly.

Phelps and Spitz are going to make a joint appearance later.

That should be really comfortable.
