I travel on the turnpike every three weeks for work, I am curious:
1. Why do cops do rolling roadblocks? I am driving the speed limit(ish). I am behind a cop. He puts his lights on, slows down to 20mph, swerves back and forth across all lanes to make traffic slow down. He doesn't pull anyone over. After 10 minutes, he goes back to normal speed. This has happened to me twice. Why?
2. Why do the State Troopers have the same uniform as the third reich?

1. To slow down traffic for construction site setup, incident cleanup, or equipment relocation going on up ahead.
2. I concur with topless_mike on this.

This usually happens before the sports complex entrance because the guys have to manually open the gate to the meadowlands exit. They have to be in the middle of the exit and the cops do it to safely keep cars away. They'll also do this to let a group of trucks leave the construction site above exit 15.
I didn't have this answer until about 2 months ago when I saw this happen myself.
As for the uniforms... I guess Hugo Boss is making public servant gear also.

I've been behind one of those rolling rollblocks on two occasions. Both times President Bush was either flying into or out of Newark Liberty. Since the Turnpike runs parrallel to, and right next to the runway, I'm pretty sure that they don't want someone pulling off to the shoulder and launching a stinger missle at Air Force One.
As for the uniforms: I guess they wear them for the same reason the Nazis wore them - because they look cool and intimidating at the same time.

I was behind one of those rolling road blocks on Rt. 80 last year. There was a big piece of metal on the road that I guess fell off a truck. They did it to slow down the traffic while another trooper pulled it off the road.
The uniforms haven't been updated since like the 1940's. The NY State Police have a similar problem, theirs look like they're from the 1930's.

I just remembered an interesting New Jersey State Trooper story. During the '94 World Cup I worked for the NY/NJ Organizing Committee and got to see a couple of the games at Giants Stadium where the State Troopers provided the on-field security. Every match, there was a trooper positioned every ten yards around the perimeter of the field for the entire game.
The very first game saw Ireland defeat Italy. Despite numerous warnings in the media, and stadium announcements not to rush the field, as soon as the final whistle blows some drunken Mick jumps out of the stands and decides he's going to go celebrate with the team. The guy was about 150 lbs and falling over drunk. He really didn't seem to be that much of a threat to anyone. Anyone but himself it turns out because he doesn't even get two feet onto the field when out of no where this trooper, who looked to be nearly seven feet tall, came flying through the air and tackles him HARD. The guy's already on the ground screaming, because he took the full force of the trooper's shoulder into his kidneys, when the trooper flips the guy over and puts a knee on the screaming guy's throat and procedes to choke him out for what seems like a full minute. When he figures that he's had enough he flips him over again and nearly dislocates the guy's arms as he's putting the cuffs on him. It was one of the coolest and most violent things that I've ever witnessed in person. Everyone in the stadium who saw it forgot all about the game and was Oooohing and Ahhhhing at this little show unfolding at the 30 yard line.
What made it even more surreal is that at one point the coach of the Irish team (whose team just beat fucking Italy - a feat tantamount to the Giants defeating the 18-0 Patriots in the Superbowl!) walks away from the on field celebration and runs over to tell the trooper to take it easy on this guy. The trooper screams at him to get the fuck away and the coach, thinking better about it, just skulks back to his team as they are whooping it up at midfield.
Since witnessing that incident I am always polite if I'm ever pulled over by a State Trooper. It's always: "Yes, sir.", "No, sir.", "I only briefly sped up to pass a truck, sir.", "Thank you, have a good day, sir." Don't ever fuck with the New Jersey State Police.

I have another NJ turnpike question:
Why does it always smell like fresh ground coffee at milepost 30? It's a very strong aroma, I can smell it for about a mile before it goes away.

Annnndddd the answer is.... right around mile marker 30, you are in (or around) Cherry Hill, home of the Melitta Coffee factory. They actually toast and grind the beans right there.
