Ohh Boy! Just got the call to umpire my first game of the season. This is like the 11th season in a row that I'm either coaching or umpiring. God I love baseball.
Anybody else out there a coach or an ump?

Mostly Little League and Babe Ruth. This year I'm also doing girls softball and men's rec leagues. I make anywhere from $30 - $50 a game (double if I'm the only ump).
I'm certified up to Junior Varsity games. I had a chance to take to course for Varsity, but most of the games start while I'm at work
Getting paid is nice but mostly I do it because I still wanted to be involved in baseball after my son graduated little league.

all I need to be paid to ump is a few free dogs and some bottled waters
but $30 or $40 is nice to have for the time spent
nothing cooler then calling a 3rd strike

I mostly get yelled at by coaches or those pain-in-the ass aunts, uncles and grandparents who set up beach chairs behind the backstop, but I never had to yell at or eject anybody yet

Dr., you said that you've been umping for years so I gotta ask you a question. When did you get to to point when all of the "compliments" shouted at you by both coaches and parents didn't bother you. Last year was my first year umpiring and I had a couple of HORRIBLE games that I would second guess my calls and let it kill my confidence. Made a couple of controversial calls Saturday and got an earful from some coaches (especially the beast that was coaching first base) and it's already starting to feel like it did last year. Any advice on how to not give a crap and actually enjoy what I'm doing.
