I love their selection of locally grown produce and pretty much everything about them. But I don't really feel like driving 32 damn miles to my nearest store today. The + side is I will be without my daughter so I can shop alone, I need some convincing.
Anyone else love Whole Foods?
I should be doing homework... also the race is coming on shortly as well as the Phils game. Grocery shopping can wait till tomorrow, right?

We actually just went there a few days ago. Their desserts and produce/meats are delicious, but a little out there price wise. I prefer Trader Joes.
(Although as I am typing this I am enjoying some delicious slab bacon I got from their meats section)

The only thing that burns me about Whole Foods is that their local produce isn't really local.
I mean, at the store I shop at in NJ, they consider FL to be "local" ... and I see a lot of CA and WA state produce at my Whole Foods. Honestly, the closest I've ever seen to "local" has been from PA.
The one thing I make a point of buying there is fresh fish. The selection can't be beat and I had to ask where the seafood department was on my first trip. At my ShopRite and Stop and Shop, I could smell it as soon as I walked in the door.
If you're not doing a stock-up trip, skip it. Seriously. It's not worth driving 60 miles round trip for "local" that isn't really local.

I have both Trader Joes and Whole Foods near me, but I prefer Fairway over both, and trader joes has some great stuff, but a small selection. Whole Foods had great selection, but extremely high prices. I love the look of Whole Foods though. If you are on Long Island, try Fairway in Plainview on Manetto Hill Rd.

Whole Foods is the best. I hear people complain about the prices of their meats and produce, but the meats are pretty close in price (and MUCH better in quality) than my other local supermarkets (Stop and Shop / Shaws). And their produce blows the shit at the other stores out of the water.

Rouski, did you start this thread just for me??? I love Whole Foods... I am actually going to throw my resume out to them and see if they'll pick me up.
I'm not too big on Trader Joe's... though I've only been in two of them. It seems like their selection is extremely limited. Whole Foods has pretty much everything I'm looking for, as well as so much more. I also love the atmosphere, how clean and organized they are, and the prepared foods section ROCKS!
As for having such a long ride to get there, be patient... they're growing everyday. There might be one around you soon.
There's also nothing better than a good privately owned health food store. They'll usually special order you anything (I special ordered something from Whole Foods a few times and never got a call and never saw those items in the store), they'll give you all the time and attention you need, and it's really important to support these smaller stores. The drawbacks are that not too many of them carry organic produce, and a lot of them are cutting back in food because stores like Whole Foods do so well with it, and a lot of their distributors sell to the large chain conventional grocery stores down the street at a better bulk discount. It's getting to be very difficult for these smaller stores to compete... and getting my start at a mom and pop health food store, I like to show them some support.

Wegmans is an amazing supermarket. You're lucky to have one near you... I have one 5 minutes away and when I discovered it I was just in awe! It's a great place to visit, but it's so expensive. I wind up getting so much extra stuff, especially prepared foods, and it really adds up. I stop in every once in a while but can't do my regular shopping there.

i like whole foods a lot for a lot of the random stuff that you can't get at a regular supermarket. i have one about 20 minutes from me here, but i'm really gonna miss it when i move. i don't have any trader joes around me. i heard they opened one in queens a while ago, but its south of the LIE which means foreign territory.
i keep hearing how great wegmans is. i heard it's one of the best companies to work for too. i've never seen one though. maybe we'll get one eventually.
for now i'll have to settle for price chopper. i hear that it's a lot better than it sounds.

I don't like whole foods because of the whole earthy liberal vibe that permeates the place. I don't like my politics mixing with my eating.
There's a Wegman's right next to local Whole Foods, and that experience, to me, is a whole lot more enjoyable.
Liz and I have also enjoyed the trader joe's experience. Although the local one is about an hour away, we go there to stock up on the delicious cheapo wine they have.

I totally get that. I guess I'm used to blocking that part out. A lot of health food store owners/buyers try to take the conversation in that direction but I'm pretty good at either steering it back or just nodding and acting interested until they wear themselves out.

Got one of those guys in my early morning Anatomy class every M-T-W... he's a great guy it seems, but I cannot STAND that peace-nick super-energetic ten cups of joe "so I can return the flower food to the ground man" etc. He apparently was a Roadie for the Grateful Dead and met Keith Harring (misspell?) which makes him pretty cool in my book... anyway.
Whole Foods
Pros: great food, great selection, if you know what you're selecting some of it is total crap, but the meat can't be beat
Cons: for people who actually hear liberal vibes like people who hear dog whistles, would be very irritated. For me, it's the mass of people in the place at any one moment but that's NJ for ya.
Long long drives to get there.
High prices for what you want and the inevitable extra goodies you buy while there.
Me and the Chick purchased crap we never needed... organic tomato juice...sparkling cider (normal+ organic!) and so on so forth.
I sigh and settle for the A&P most times.

But she's driving 60 miles to go there, so in the long run that is probably doing more damage than going around the corner and buy non-'organic' food. Might even be enough to make baby whales cry with all those emissions and arctic oil expeditions in pristine wildernesses. America--$%^ yeah!
I've gone to one a couple of times for lunch, but I almost think there is too much going on for me. I love they Harris-Teeter near my old work, they haven't made it north to Baltimore yet.

Whole foods and trader joes really are two different types of supermarkets so to speak. The general purpose is to appeal to different types of people.
Also the Whole Foods around the tri-state area are completely different from the Whole Foods in Texas (home office base), california and majority of the western states.
Trader Joes does hate being called a supermarket they prefer grocery store. Different type of culture and different type of people work for that company.
Wegman's is another great supermarket that blows away the competition. As someone said earlier has a great reputation as being a great company to work for.
The advantage TJ and Wegman's has over alot of other grocery stores is the fact they are non-union and are not public companies.

Harris Teeter! lol Damn, I haven't seen one of them since NC! I preferred Food Lion when I was down there.
I had to organize a bridal shower about 2 yrs ago and had the all the munchies ordered from Whole Foods and they were dead on! It was pricey but when we had 6 girls paying in on it and one of the chicks was wealthy as fuck, price was no object.
Boob, I'm also like you though, I like CLEAN and ORGANIZED and Whole Foods has that mastered. I just don't see that in ShopRite, although I do adore my local ShopRite but I prefer the produce in Whole Foods over ShopRite.

Shoprite rules. My mom gave me a gift card for the CanCan sale and I went nuts stocking up on soups and tuna and stuff and it was still under 100$... I couldn't believe it, especially coming from doing my normal shopping at Wegman's. I wasted so much money in the past. Now I'm all about getting my staples at Shoprite, getting my fancy shmancy foods at the occasional Whole Foods, and the very rare trip to Wegman's.

I love Whole Foods, and TJ's. Whole Foods is actually about as expensive as the grocery store near my old apartment. TJ's is a specialty grocery store, they have a pretty interesting philosophy how they stock each store. They don't expect you to be able to get all your shopping done there, but they try to provide things you can't get anywhere else for prices you also can't get anywhere else. If they can't do this with any item, they won't carry it.

OMG, don't even talk to me about sales because sales + coupons = me
I will spend $ like there is no tomorrow but I really can get off just thinking that I'm getting over on a store with coupons. ShopRite has double coupons. You have to hear how sick I am... I use loreal kids shampoo on my daughter and its $2.99/bottle. It was on sale for $1.99 2 weeks ago. I had 20 coupons at $0.75 each when doubled its $1.50 off each fuckin bottle of shampoo came to $0.49. I now have 20 bottles of kids shampoo for 1 damn kid.

I only use coupons for things that are on sale, if you have an ebay acct and you wanted to buy coupons on ebay I could recommend the seller I use to buy additional coupons from. I seriously buy coupons off this woman & do so often, she's in Michigan. My mother use to think it was hysterical but after she saw how much I saved she's not laughing. I only get coupons for shampoo/razors/lunch box snacks/paper products/etc. Shoot me a pm if your interested.

You have no idea how many of my friends shot that idea down immediately... then this gourmet farmer's market opened down by the train station and it's the same concept but 1/4 the size of the Foodtown... I thought that would be how Whole Foods would be before I actually went there. Then I took my head out of my own ass and realized its a fucking grocery store and I'm just imagining the "liberal vibe". Its just a bunch of people working for one of the best companies in the world to work for ringing up your purchase.
Also, I live in Boston. So there's a earthy liberal vibe that permeates the whole city.

Totally agree with you on Stop & Shop being gross.
I stopped shopping at my local Stop & Shop partly because I could smell the seafood department as soon as I walked in the door. Now they've taken out the fresh seafood and put in frozen instead. It still stinks.
The biggest issue I have with Stop & Shop is their checkout lanes. We have a "Super Stop & Shop" less than a mile from the house. Each and every time I've been in there, out of 15 possible checkout lines, they have ... 2 open.
Even when they added self-checkout lanes it didn't improve.

No point in doing that ... Stop & Shop sucks and I only use them in emergencies.
It's kind of a toss-up among the filthy produce department, stinky seafood and meat departments (even AFTER they ripped out the fresh seafood in the store) and the foul dairy & frozen sections for reasons as to why I can't shop there anymore on principle.

Same with me in Queens. The Super Stop and Shop isn't bad but there are no Shop Rites around. There is a neighborhood C-Town supermarket right down the street which is tiny (you can't even push a shopping carts around). But they do have home delivery and you can fax your order to them so that you can do your grocery shopping without leaving the house.

They do remember a little, and they alert you when something you bought is on sale.
But when I used to live in Quincy, we had something called "Shopping Buddy" at the local S&S. It was like a mini computer that went on your shopping cart. It would remember your previous orders and would remind you if you were in that aisle of what you bought. You could also order your deli orders directly from it and it would alert you when they were ready to be picked up. They were also working on a way for you to upload shopping lists over the internet so you'd show up at the store, scan your card and your list would be right there. But I think they've since scrapped it for the smaller personal scanner.

I grow alot of my own produce throughout the summer. Nothing is better than locally grown. Maybe I will bring you some someday.
Oh, YES PLEASE! I make fresh juice several times a day and really would like to find a good, inexpensive source for organic produce around here in NJ. I've heard I should look into co-ops, but there's not much control in what you get... and I don't need 5# of cucumbers one week and 20 heads of lettuce the next. I need some control over what I get.
I wish there was a good local organic farm that I could go to. Anybody know of one?
Meanwhile I'm scrubbing the shit out of my cheap conventional produce with soap to get rid of any pesticides on the outside... and try to forget that it's all over the inside as well.

The NJ Dep't of Agriculture provides a list of farmers' markets online.
You can pick and choose the one(s) nearest you through the season, especially since we're starting to hit peak growing season on a lot of crops. One thing that does kind of suck about the seasonal farmers' markets is the fact that they're usually during the day on weekdays, so it's often tough to get to them. However, there are a few open on weekends and more that are open year-round are opening every day.
New Brunswick might be kind of a schlep for you in So. Amboy, but the produce at the George Street Co-Op is all locally grown. Some of it even comes from the New Brunswick Community Garden project that the Co-Op supports. There's also a Farmers' Market in Highland Park, starting in May (I think). They're open on Fridays, 11a-4p or something like that. I've forgotten where else...I want to say that Metuchen's is on the weekend (Saturday, maybe?) but again, that might be a schlep.

I am so used to driving hours upon hours day in and day out for my former job... 15 more minutes to Metuchen is no biggie.
Thanks Thebazile78 I will absolutely check out those leads... that farmer's market in Highland Park... is it going to be organic? There's a great farmer's market on route 9 in my area that looks like a bomb hit it, or like you're stepping into a 3rd world country, but I love it because I can get a week's worth of juicing veggies for maybe about 15$. It's not organic, however, and this concerns me.

Not sure about the HP farmers' market, but definitely organic at the CoOp. I love them there, even if their selection is small and kinda hit-or-miss. What I do love about them is the fact that they sell spices, grains, honey, syrup and sometimes vinegar in bulk so if I need something for a recipe, I don't need to buy a ton of it ... I can just buy what I need for the recipe and not spend a ton of $$ ... I've done that with oddball grains like amaranth and quinoa before.
Here's that site I posted about earlier:
http://www.state.nj.us/jerseyfresh/
And I was wrong about the HP farm market starting in May ... the Jersey Fresh site lists the start date for July.

I've heard one of these new Whole Foods will be in New Brunswick. George St Co-op will have some major competition if that's true... but they've been around forever, have a great niche in that town, so hopefully they'll make it through. Especially if they do a lot of bulk items and keep their prices low... Whole Foods does a lot of bulk, but it's expensive.

Where would they put the Whole Foods? Replace C-Town? Take over Aldi?
There's no freaking room! The CoOp would really suffer if they were to replace C-Town with a Whole Foods ... you pretty much have to know where the CoOp is but if they took out C-Town, it'd be right on George Street by the new RU apartments at Monument Square. Only drawback is no parking because it's right by the Baptist church and the African "head shop."
Sole advantage to building downtown? Tax breaks ... and possibly UEZ benefits for consumers on taxed items. So ... you'd only pay 3.5% on your fancy shampoo and organic cleansers without having to brave Route 1 traffic to get to the Princeton store.
(Thinking about this made me remember that I was driving by the other day and could've sworn I saw a drug deal go down, but that may be my paranoia talking. I've been white-knuckling it down George Street since college.)

It definitely has its bad areas. And by the way, I'm not sure exactly where it's going to be... I have to say New Brunswick would be an amazing location for a WF because of the young crowd and the sheer amount of hipsters living there. I'm surprised there aren't more health food stores there already.

I wish the whole foods would open in paramus already, but the stupid idiots had to build a 77,000 square foot two floor store, second floor was supposed to be all alcohol but they got denied a license cause they already had too many in NJ. So who knows when it will open because they bit off more then they can chew now and their rent is high as hell.

nah its still smaller then their Austin, TX store (which is the home office) that one is amazing. Their home office is connected to the building and has a breezeway where you can walk across into the store, pretty damn nice.
I haven't heard about a new brunswick one opening or even in plans but I am a little behind in real estate for supermarkets since I switched positions. I do know they have one planned in Union. I will find out about the new brunswick one and let you know where it is planned for.

"Hipsters" ?
Not exactly.
It's still really ghetto and most of those alleged "hipsters" go back to Mumsy and Daddums's places during the summer...then you see the true face of New Brunswick. Having lived there year-round for 6 years (including summer sublets in college) and commuted in for alumni association meetings, summertime is probably the one time of year when it's stagnant and the contrast between those Riverwatch complexes down near 18 and the streets off of Livingston Avenue is sharpest.
Don't let those Riverwatch developments fool you; it's a clever facade.

just an update to what I posted before. Whole Foods is not looking at New Brunswick at all. The median income for the community is too small. They are looking at East Brusnwick though with a proposed deal and trying to get community support for it.

I wanted to chime in and say I totally dig Whole Foods. I happily drive the 30+ miles to White Plains to get there for their meats and their prepared foods/cheeses/breads all the time. I like Trader Joes as well, we have one in Danbury, it's smaller but it still has some good stuff like their rice selection and the frozen string beans that I love. There's also a Hannaford in Carmel, NY where I live that's pretty much brand new, been there for about a year now. It's like a Super Stop 'N Shop except you never need a Stop 'N Shop card or coupons which is pretty cool. The last store that I always love to talk about is Stew Leonards and the only people who can appreciate Stew Leonards are people are CT or Yonkers. It's like a glorified Whole Foods without being all preachy about liberal politics, and it's like a amusement park inside with singing cows and singing milk cartons. The one Stew's in Danbury even has a petting zoo outside!!!!
