Okay, I read a copy of Secret Invastion #1 last night. Putting aside that the copy I bought yesterday appears to be missing one page, and actually duplicates about 6 other pages out of order even), I thought it was pretty great.
The Skrulls have made their initial move, as we see several characters (two supporting characters and one classic hero) be revealed as Skrulls. Plus, we see a ship, coming from Skrull space, crash land in the Savage Land containing the '70's versions of a number of heroes. Are these heroes just Skrulls themselves meant to create confusion, are they the actual replaced heroes or are they a mixture of the two. Who knows.
I can't wait to read New Avengers during this series as they apparently will show in flashback form (or some similar device) how the Skrulls have replaced heroes and how they have been affecting things since at least Avengers Disassembled.
All in all, a very good start to the event (except for the printing errors in the copy I read).

Does anyone know if the Secret Invasion is taking place on Earth 616 for marvel? Or is it in another multiverse?
I bet it turns out that the Steve Rogers that got killed was a Skrull.
And every other hero they want to bring back to life.

OK, Secret Invasion #2 came out yesterday and I was a little underwhelmed. I'm hoping that the next issue picks up the pace somewhat. The big Skrull reveals, to me at least, were not so big.
A question:
Was anybody else trying to find some reason for the double panel of the Young Avengers towards the end of the book? Am I supposed to be reading into something there?
The Mockingbird reveal was OK but she always was a C-level character to me. And yes, the Sentry is a whackjob, we get it. And could the 70's Luke Cage say "Christmas" a few more times? Jeez.

The Marvel writers are pretty adamant this won't happen, and they point to the fact that when Steve Rogers was killed, his body didn't turn into a Skrull body like Eletrka did when she was killed.

If they cheapen my favorite Marvel book (and my vote for best Cap run of all time) for the sake of a summer crossover, I'm quitting. I have severe "Event" burnout right now, and the fact that SI is so far readable is the only reason I'm buying into the hype.

But some time limits should be in order. I pick up my books on Wednesday at 11 am. I'm sure most of the other readers here don't have that option so I wouldn't post right away. Do we need some sort of "gun law" waiting period? Say two days after a new release date?

Is anyone else as disappointed in the art of SI#2 as I am? I had a really hard time figuring out what exactly was going on from panel to panel. In particular, I'm thinking about the 'SQUISH' panel.
Had the same problem with ish #1 of Superpowers Project and Avengers/Invaders. The art was almost amateur-level in both books.

For example, I just read the first two issues of this and the Avengers tie-ins. It's interesting enough so far. Seems like they may be dragging it out a bit. There's over 60 books with all the tie-ins.

It seems to me that Marvel is leaving the meat of the story in all the cross over titles and using the main series to just wet an appetite for that Marvel get a big FU from me
And secondly Marvel should just kill the Sentry because it seems nobody can write him or know what to do with him

Um, i think the meat of the story is in the main series.
What series do you think features the "meat?"
Might Avengers and New Avengers are just showing background, i.e. how did the Skrulls set up the invasion. But the actual invasion (such as the attack of the Super Skrulls) is in the main series.

The Nick Fury stuff is definitely interesting, but it's just a great side story to the Invasion. Let's compare it to the DDay invasion. The actual invasion of Normandy is the meat, but seeing how intelligence was done prior to the invasion, while very interesting, is not the meat of the invasion.

on your first point, im still up in the air about this. who knows, maybe with skrull technology, they were able to completely wipe the skrulls mind as soon as he transformed into tony and then retrained him from there? but my initial thoughts were the exact same thing as yours.
and your second point, HELL YES!!! i loved that last page. i am really looking forward to the crazy shit that comes with the little kid, phobos, with him instilling fear into everyone.
im really looking forward to the next issue.
also, i was very unimpressed with the new avengers title that came out last week. it only dealt with spiderman and some of the inhabitants of the savageland. i was really looking forward to the issue because the new avengers title is one of my favorite ongoing series, but i was very disappointed.

Fuck. I can't remember the story with the speedster in the Howling Commandoes. Are you sure she's a mutant?
I don't think Marvel ever identified all of the 198 mutants left. This gives them the ability to introduce a new mutant, but say he was one of the 198.
And they haven't abandoned the story.

So, since the books have been out for over a week (not discussing today's books yet), let's recap so far.
The following characters were Skrulls:
Elektra
Black Bolt
Spider-Woman
Jarvis
Dum Dum Dugan
Henry Pym
A shitload of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents
From the Savage Land Ship, Wolverine, Beast, Phoenix, Spider-man, Vision
Some of the Initiative guys that I never knew
Captain Marvel
I forget anyone?
It appears Iron Man is not a Skrull. Reed Richards is getting tortured, Nick Fury and his Commandoes kicked some Super Skrull ass in Time Square, Thor's coming to kick Skrull ass. The Skrulls believe that Earth was promised to them in prophecy.
Anything else?

New Avengers. Bendis has been using the books New Avengers and Mighty Avengers to tell the story of how the Skrulls infiltrated the Avengers, society, etc. For instance, one issue was about how they replaced Hank Pym and what that Skrull did afterwards.
Another issue was about how they replaced Spider-Woman. Today's Might Avengers was about how they replaced Elektra.

The revolutionary is the head of one of teh 50 state initiative teams
He is actually a big deal, because the 3-D man has the power to see skrulls so after killing one he got sent to the initiative camp, where the revolutionary used his power to make the 3-D man see everyone as skrulls to cover his tracks

So the penultimate issue of Secret Invasion came out last week.
Any thoughts?
I'm still liking this event more than Final Crisis. Yes, it has problems, but I've liked it for being a fun slugfest of an event. I certainly like it more than I did Planet Hulk and maybe even Civil War.
But I am ready for it, and all of the Skrull crossovers to end.

The last issue of Secret Invasion comes out tomorrow. Whatever happens leads into "Dark Reign" storyline, including a "Dark Avengers."

Finally got Booster Gold Vol. 2 last weekend. Great Geoff Johns book. Loved how it tied into DC continuity so well.

I love the new Booster Gold. I have always thought they could do more with Booster and they finally are - Plus it has been a very well done series.
I really hope the new writing team is able to keep the same quality and momentum.

It's a really good book, and I think it didn't get worse after the second book. I stopped reading it simply because of $ decisions, but I enjoyed it.
Though this should be in the comic books thread.

Okay, I've read the conclusion of Secret Invasion, and it was okay to good. There are definite things I liked, but after thinking awhile I think the thing that bugged me is that half the issue is the conclusion to Secret Invasion and the other half is essentially Dark Reign #1. I wish they would have concluded the story with how the invasion was over, and left some of the after effects (including who is essentially taking over the Marvel universe until afterwards.

I think you are spot-on with your assessment. It seemed almost hurried to me, in a "Too bad - thank you for playing; our next contestant hails from..." kind of way. There were almost zero details about the final battle and the ramifications of finding the "the ship" that Iron Man found were glossed over.
It was almost like they knew there was no way to fit everything into one issue, so instead of doing it right thery said "F-it; here are a couple of pages of Cliffs Notes on what happened."

i thought the main series for secret invasion was decent. i liked the beginning of it and the concept behind it but really thought it the last issue was rushed like eli stated. i thought all of the tie ins were absolute crap esp. ms. marvel, fantastic four, and x men. the whole secret invasion event has really dropped my interest in marvel, the only monthly books i am still going to be picking up will be new avengers and wolverine and i will get the newest captain america hc when it comes out.
i have absolutely no interest in dark reign.

I really didn't dig this series. It was 99% generic mash-up hero Super Skrull battles. There was none of the subterfuge and distrust that was promised in the interviews leading up to it. The X-men, Thor, and Nova/GoTG tie-ins were pretty well excellent though. Dark Reign I could take or leave. It might just be event fatigue, but how are we supposed to care about a brand new universe-shaking-change-of-status-quo when they've changed the status quo every year for the last 3 or 4?

Having not read it yet, all I can say is your description mirrors how I felt after reading Earth X. After 12 issues, I gave an entire year to that series and the big ending is... To be continued in Universe X.

I wouldn't say it's exactly like that. There is an ending to the Secret Invasion, but Marvel has decided on a new status quo called Dark Reign that arises based on certain things that happen during the invasion. And half of the issue was spent showing that that new quo is. They should have just showed the end to the invasion and the things that lead to Dark Reign, and then show the new status Quo is Dark Reign #1.
The best way I can describe it is that in any regular series, you often have these huge story arcs that have big things happening, for instance Dark Phoenix where someone dies, leaves, the team, etc. Then the next issue shows how the hero or team are changed due to the events of the past arc, and the new way it's going forward.
Rather than doing Secret Invasion and Dark Reign like that, the conclusion to Secret Invasion feels like it has half of the "next issue."

So it's like the last episode of True Blood.
