COULD NOT have asked for a better final season opener in Yankee Stadium.

Wang with 7 innings of 2-run ball, nice to see Girardi come out to the mound and let him finish the 7th (unlike Torre, who would've pulled him and put in Farnsworth to give up the go-ahead run). Got to see the Joba/Mariano tandem in action, and both looked great (gotta love Joba's enthusiasm on strike 3). Melky, A-Rod, and even Giambi flashed some leather. Bats are looking decent, pitching was solid. Picture perfect opening day.

Doctor Z
04-01-2008, 07:37 PM
One thing I DIDN'T feel good about tonight...

Since 2001, not a single player has worn #21... leading you to believe they're holding it to, oh I dunno... retire it? And maybe if they don't retire it, at least save it for someone worthy. But then I see during the player introductions... #21, LaTroy Hawkins.

Really? Are you SERIOUS?

Also, Kyle Farnsworth getting boo'ed on opening day was pretty rough. C'mon people... Opening day? As much as I've gotten on his ass, don't boo the guy before he's even made an appearance this season. That's kinda bogus.

From PA's blog (http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2008/04/01/2008-yankees-payroll/)

NEW YORK YANKEES
Alex Rodriguez $28,000,000
Jason Giambi $23,428,571
Derek Jeter $21,600,000
Bobby Abreu $16,000,000
dl-Andy Pettitte $16,000,000
Mariano Rivera $15,000,000
Jorge Posada $13,100,000
Johnny Damon $13,000,000
Hideki Matsui $13,000,000
Mike Mussina $11,071,030
dl-Carl Pavano $11,000,000
Kyle Farnsworth $5,916,667
Chien-Ming Wang $4,000,000
LaTroy Hawkins $3,750,000
Robinson Cano $3,000,000
Jose Molina $1,875,000
Morgan Ensberg $1,750,000
dl-Andrew Brackman $1,184,788
Wilson Betemit $1,165,000
Brian Bruney $725,000
Billy Traber $500,000
Melky Cabrera $461,200
Phil Hughes $406,350
Shelley Duncan $398,300
dl-Sean Henn $397,448
Ian Kennedy $394,275
dl-Jeff Karstens $393,300
Jonathan Albaladejo $393,225
Ross Ohlendorf $391,425
Joba Chamberlain $390,000
dl-Humberto Sanchez $390,000

Total is about 208 mil. Highlighted are the players whose contracts expire and are likely to be off the payroll next year. Pettitte's a maybe, so is Abreu. But the rest are fairly certain. That's about 85 mil coming off the books. They could sign 2 big ticket free agents (but I don't think they will) and still have 50 mil coming off the books next year. If Pettite and Abreu both stay, its still 20-25 mil coming off with both getting extensions at what you figure would be a lower rate considering their ages.

Source (http://www.replacementlevel.com/index.php/RLYW/comments/the_2008_diamond_mind_projection_blowout_pt_2)

Yankees
Projected W-L: 95-67
Playoff %: 76%
Best Average Projection: ZiPS (98-64)
Worst Average Projection: Chone (93-69)
The consensus is the Yankees are the best team in the American League. This doesn't seem unrealistic if their young pitchers perform as projected, but that's a really big if. Any projections of young pitchers based primarily on MLEs are probably going to have large error bars around them. I'm also a little worried about the bullpen , although Mo and Joba are a fine 1-2 punch. The bench looks to be as good as it's been in some time. On offense, the Yankees scored 1000 or more runs in 376 of the 6000 runs, so about 6% of the time. For comparison's sake, Boston did it 12 times, Detroit did it 13 times, Atlanta did it twice, Philadelphia did it 31 times, Milwaukee did it twice and Colorado did it 4 times. At least statistically, the conventional wisdom that Boston is the clear class of the division is just not true on virtual paper.

The projection systems used by the stat geeks (cairo, pecota, zips etc ) all like the Yanks to varying degrees. Baseball Prospectus' Pecota system loves them. This Yankee blog took an aggregate of the main systems and came up with this summary.

I know alot of the sportswriters are picking against the Yanks, which is fine by me. The Yanks do have uncertainties in their starting rotation going with 2 rookies (Hughes/Kennedy). But what bugs me is the same guys are picking the Red Sox. The Red Sox are in the exact same boat as the Yanks, they have 2 young unproven pitchers (Lester/Bucholtz) in their rotation as well. If anything, the Yank rookies project slightly higher than the RedSox ones, plus they have Joba (who projects very high) likely going into the rotation later this year. I like their chances, and I'm not alone. But if they take a step back this year, I'm fine with that as well. I think they're building the next dynasty.

Also, remember the Yanks made the playoffs last year with these guys starting for them

Pitcher - Games started
Matt DeSalvo - 6
Kei Igawa - 12
Chase Wright - 2
Darrell Rasner - 6
Jeff Karstens - 3
Tyler Clippard - 6

Absolutely a shitty play on Giambi's part, i dont doubt the error on him. But on a ball hit to first base a pitcher runs to cover. Moose half assed it over there. Plus, I just can't stand the guy and i didn't want the Yanks to re-up him 3 years ago. Any chance i get to tear him apart I will.

Jose Canseco fired another shot at Alex Rodriguez yesterday, saying he believes the Yankees star did more than just lust after his ex-wife, Jessica. "I believe they had an affair," Canseco said during a book-signing in Ridgewood, N.J. "I'm pretty sure of it. I spoke with Alex and he denied it, but the way he denied it, it wasn't reassuring. I spoke to my ex-wife last year about it and I'm not going to say she acknowledged that they did, but she did not say that they did not." Canseco wrote in his new book "Vindicated" that Rodriguez was smitten with his then-wife and constantly called her. Canseco has said this is the reason he hates Rodriguez and decided to include him in his new book, including allegations that he introduced the Yankees third baseman to a steroid dealer in the late 1990s.

Don't hate the player, hate the game, Jose.

It's the all-or-nothing Yankee offense typical of the last 3 years. Bases loaded, nobody out, heart of the order, and we only scored because of a wild pitch and a fly ball. That inning could've been huge.

Actually, McGowan handed them that entire inning. He couldn't throw strikes with his fastball, and barely with his other stuff. 2 runs was pretty good.

I liked the way the opening day game went, 2 great fielding plays by Melky and one by Giambi. A close, well pitched game that they won with a few hits and a shut down bullpen. Thats the type of game we'd lose in recent years. I feel like were on the right track.

Cashman said it best the other day, he knows they have talent but he said this year would be the year the team either pleasantly surprises him or they take one small step backward to take two giant steps forward. Dead? It's loaded with Yankee haters. Who as usual are more worried about our team than they are about their own.

Its April, some of us work saturdays, and lets be honest the bats haven't given us much to cheer about so far. They will eventually, and most of the pitchers aren't real sharp yet and don't have their full velocity. Mo was throwing 91 the other night, Joba 93, Hughes 90-92, Kennedy and Moose 86-88. They're just getting stretched out, they'll get stronger over the coming weeks.

BTW-Loving the bullpen so far outside of Farnsworth and Hawkins. Joba, Bruney, Traber, Albaladejo, Ohlendorf have been real good. Bruney's been the biggest surprise for me.

I agree with Flaherty there. I think that playoff performance had as much to do with Torre as it did Wang. Wang was bad on the road all year and had no track record of whether or not he could pitch on short rest. So what does Torre do? Pitch him game 1 on the road and decide to experiment with short rest during the playoffs.

He has also always used his 4 seamer, slider and changeup, he just usually doesn't feature them. You might remember his start late last year vs the Red Sox (who had killed him earlier in the year) he threw a ton of sliders and four seamers and pitched beautifully.

Unlike Torre (who wasn't into stats) Girardi tracks every pitch of every at bat, so I don't think making adjustments like that will be an issue anymore. They'll be making them in-game as opposed to between starts, if at all under Torre.

If there is something to worry about, it might be Jeter's throwing. Giambi saved him from at least 3 errors already this week, and that missed play at second today where Cano stabbed at the ball was 100% Jeters fault. He threw the ball to Cano's hand side instead of his glove side, which clearly crossed Cano up. I was sitting in the low 300s and had a perfect view of it.

Whatever the case, Kay asked if he needed to change the way he pitched. And clearly the answer was yes.. If it was usuing pitches that he already had more, then so be it. Thats why he had such a bad spring, he was working on his other pitches, which through Torre or Mel or Guidry, he never used. That was the point of the question. The pitches he had were poor because he never used them rather then because they were poor as far as his ability.. Maybe Flahrety misunderstood the question.

For anyone interested, this was posted on another fan site

Ticketmaster has singles: Red Sox @Stadium

Ppl who want to go to the April 16th (and 17th) Yanks-Red Sox game. Ticketmaster is showing tix availability (face) in 200 boxes and upstairs boxes in the $45-65 range. I don't know if the 17th is available b/c I haven't checked.

Single seats are still available for the Wednesday Red Sox game. Meaning that you can go to the Yankee website (http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/ticketing/index.jsp?c_id=nyy), click the game on the schedule and select "1" when they ask how many seats you want. You can do it twice, but chances are the seats won't be together if you want to go with someone. But Red Sox tickets are so hard to come by and so expensive on Stubhub, its worth it just to see the game live. I just checked, and a Loge Box seat was available. Good luck.

Girardi said he was considering several options for replacing Jeter. One is to move Alex Rodriguez from third base. The topic overshadowed the modest gains the Yankees made Monday.

"Considering" but I doubt he'll do it. Its the best team defensively, but its also a can of worms iin a few directions. Girardi would really show me some guts if he did it.

I like the A-rod at SS idea, it was done when Jeter crushed himself in the stands a few years back during the Sox game.

Is it just me or is 4:10pm the dumbest time to start a game. Make it a day game or a night game, I guess this was done for travel reasons but it still sucks.

P.S. I own A-Rod in fantasy this season, thats his first 4 k game since 2006 (the last time i owned him).

Geez, I hope its nothing serious with Kennedy. This is a fucking disaster for the bullpen. Bruney and whoever follows him will be shot for a few days. They better hope they get some length from Pettite tomorrow and Wang vs Boston.

Igawa had 2 really good outings in Scranton, try not to gag but he just might get Kennedy's next start.

Sounds conspiratorial, but then again I love me a good conspiracy. Peter Abraham posted today (http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2008/04/09/game-9-yankees-at-royals/) that Morgan Ensberg has a knee injury that even Ensberg himself was unaware of, and is headed to the DL as a result. So who knows.

We al remember BDC sayin it necessary that the Yankees get off to a 9-2 start to be in good shape this year. well as per the ESPN.com MLB standings as of 15 minutes ago, so i dont know the exact updates so far tonight, these are the teams remaining in the entire MLB who can still possibly go 9-2. I mean BDC was right on, look at these powerhouses, plus current records, and realize all the other teams are FUCKED:

Baltimore Orioles 6-1
Milwaukee Brewers 6-1
Arizona D Backs 7-2
St Louis Cardinals 6-2
Chicago White Sox 5-2
Kansas City Royals 5-2

THATS IT. No other teams in MLB can go 9-2. They must all be in terrible shape right now

Not sure how much I like Girardi using Joba as a 7th AND 8th inning pitcher. I've never been into "babying" pitchers, but... if he's using this guy for 2 innings every other day, you're kinda tempting fate.

Honestly, i fully believe that a pitcher of Joba's ability can handle 4 outs......considering they want him to be a starter anyway he should get used to possibly going two innings.

Doctor Z
04-10-2008, 06:57 PM
Yeah, but a starter pitches once every 5 days. Not every other day and occasionally 2 days in a row.

TheGameHHH
04-10-2008, 07:03 PM
but they throw 7 innings roughly around those 5 days. If Joba were older or on the decline i'd wholeheartedly agree with you. its just given his age and future plans, i see no problem with him going for 4 outs.

Okay, first Joe Girardi move I must officially take issue with...

He pitches Mariano in a non-save 6-1 ballgame, the night before heading into a series against the Red Sox. God knows Yankees/Red Sox games are always long, and are almost always decided by 1 or 2 runs. Let Mo sit one more night. It's a 5-run game. Someone else can get three Royals out, and have a fresh Mo going into the weekend. Doesn't take a genius...

Seriously, c'mon Joe.

its possible Mo warmed up with the lead still 4-1 and a save still a possibility. Maybe after he was warm he didnt want to not throw him. i have no idea, this is just a guess.

Luckily Paplebon threw 22 pitches tonight as well so its not as bad.
