Anyone want to explain that whole "true ace" thing to me? Is it because Wang doesn't strike guys out? That was about as dominating a performance as you'll see. Ahead of every hitter, used his secondary pitches well, and kept his pitch count so low he was able to go the distance. He doesn't need to overpower, he sets them up and makes them get themselves out.

Nice to see Giambi finally get some results tonight. He's been tattooing the ball, he's just had zero luck.

.TOTAL WANGINATION!!!

So much for Wang being a question mark this season, based on his end to last season. Big Wanger's looking as regular-season good as ever. At 3-0 only 2 weeks into the season, could this be the year he finally breaks 20 wins? Here's to hoping he stays healthy.

Also, just a side note: Awesome job bunting for a hit with 2 outs and no one on in the bottom of the 9th when a guy's got a complete game 1-hitter going. Classic Red Sox douchebaggery.

Doctor Z
04-11-2008, 08:56 PM
Notwithstanding Cocoa's middle finger bunt single at the end, Wang could've pitched a perfect game, if not for A-Rod's high throw to first, and Abreu letting that HR go out. HIS DEFENSE LET HIM DOWN! HE COULD'VE MADE HISTORY!!!

How legendary would that footage be... Wang celebrating a perfect game on the mound at Fenway...

*sigh*

Oh yea, no doubt. But since he already had a hit i didn't want that 1 hit to be a hit that prob should had been caught.

Well thats the thing. What didn't make him a true ace last year was not really the K's it was the fact that for whatever reason, Managing or whatever, he did not use his other pitches well. If his sinker was not working, he was DEAD!. This year he isn't throwing as many sinkers and getting people out with a fb and a slider and keeps people guessing more. Now like tonight, if he didnt have his sinker he has other pitches. He is a different pitcher this year. And will go deeper into games because he wont throw as many pitchers and have that many runners on.. What he finish with, 93?

Kevin
04-11-2008, 09:05 PM
On another note.. You KNOW Torre was bringing in Joba in the 8th and Mo in the 9th, even with Wang's then i think 73 pitches.

In prep for a mod quote i'll get it out of the way now but, I love Wang. With that said, maybe the argument is a "true ace" wins in october and not just blaming torre for the short rest. i love everything he does during the regular season and ill take his 19 wins a year for the next decade. but he HAS to start pitching better in the playoffs, plain and simple.

Obviously he was awful last year, but he was great in 05 and acceptable in 06. Look at Pettite (http://www.baseball-reference.com/p/pettian01.shtml), Clemens (http://www.baseball-reference.com/c/clemero02.shtml), Mussina (http://www.baseball-reference.com/m/mussimi01.shtml)or even David Cone' (http://www.baseball-reference.com/c/coneda01.shtml)s post season records. So down by 3 runs with two outs in the 9th he should have been worried about Wang's 1 hitter and not trying to get on base any way possible in order to win? That's just dumb.

Doctor Z
04-12-2008, 05:09 AM
They obviously had no chance of winning. The game was over at that point (down by 3, no one on base, 2 outs, starter still in the game, Joba & Mo in the bullpen). And I have NO DOUBT they would've bunted even if it was 10-0 and he had a perfect game going, just for the sake of shitting on history.

They had just gotten embarrassed on their home field, so they bunted for a single. It was more of a gesture than a legitimate effort to win the game.

See, this what you aren't getting Boony.. Here are the 3 keys to winning and having a great season.

1 Start 9-2.

2 start with an avg of at LEAST 545

3 Have a manager thats a real man.

So I don't think Ortiz would have hit anything, he has started terrible so he can't bounce back. He is DONE!

I didn't say respect the 1-hitter. I said don't lay down a bunt and be a douche. If he gets a legitimate hit there, then good. Hell, knock Wang out of the complete game for all I care. But laying down a bunt single there is like stealing a base with a 10-0 lead. It's faggy.

Just got home, nice job on the first guess there. You, me, Sterling/Waldman and basically every Yankee fan on the planet was thinking the same thing. As it turned out Bruney gave up a hit to Youklis, so I'm not sure how much difference it would have made had you walked Manny and pulled Moose after that AB.

FOX said that it was Moose who insisted on staying in, and Girardi gave in. I don't think you'll see that happen again.

From LoHud (http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2008/04/12/game-12-yankees-at-red-sox/)

UPDATE, 4;19 p.m.: Mrs. A-Rod is due to have their second child sometime next week, so Alex will be getting a couple of days off. He and Cano are the only Yankees to have played every game so far.

Yikes. I know he hasn't done much so far, but this lineup is so anemic right now its scary to lose A-Rod for any amount of time. I just hope its not the middle of next week, Wed/Thu is the home Boston series. You have Tampa before and Baltimore after. This might be the first time in my life I find myself rooting for a cesarean. FRIDAY! FRIDAY!! COME ON FRIDAY!! WOOOO!!!!

Then again, who knows. You never know how stuff like this plays out. You could have said the same thing with Posada being hurt and Molina's been great.

Yankee broadcasts are above all this crass commercialism. Now let's get back to the pure beauty of the game of Baseball. That was the 15th out, and 15 minutes could get you quote from GEICO.

A pair of hardhats working at the new Yankee Stadium dropped a dime on the location of a buried Red Sox jersey.

Beantown-loving construction worker Gino Castignoli, who lives in The Bronx, confessed to The Post last week that he buried a Red Sox slugger David Ortiz jersey at the site last summer while working at the stadium.

Sorry theres no video of the guy, but Jesus Montero is absolutely destroying the league in Charleston, .959 OPS so far in the early going. 18 years old, was signed as a 16 year old out of Venezuela a few years back. Scouts rank player skills on a 20-80 scale, his power ranks an 80. He's hit at every level, the only real question is whether he'll outgrow his position (C) and end up at 1B. Baseball America puts him at #6 (http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/features/265405.html) (#4 if you don't count Joba and Kennedy) and that was before this year started. He could be turning into an absolute monster of a prospect by mid season. Stay tuned.

Yes. Lonn Trost denied the story completely, said "it was an April Fools day joke 5 days late." He said that a few days ago, he might have believed that at the time. According to this story a few of the construction workers who worked with the Sox fan came forward and they searched around and found it.

2. Edwar Ramirez’s Story isn’t over (http://mvn.com/milb-yankees/2008/04/13/five-things-that-we-learned-this-week/)

Strange flukes sometime happen in baseball. Sometimes players have some kind of ridiculously good (or bad) season that is uncharacteristic of their ability level. Edwar Ramirez was better in the minor leagues last year than any reliever in recent memory. He failed to make the team more because of better options ahead of him rather than his own spring failures. How has Edwar started the season? He has pitched 6 innings in 5 games, with 11 strikeouts, 1 walk, and 1 hit allowed. There might be three or four teams in the majors, including the Yankees, that are not clamoring to call up a reliever while being this dominant. His 16.5 K/9 is almost exactly the same rate that he struck batters out at last year, but this time he’s not walking any body. Its hard to believe that he would do a worse job than Kyle Farnsworth at the very least, and he could be just as dominant as Joba Chamberlain at his best.

I think he just needs a slight wrinkle to his fastball that will keep MLB hitters from crushing it. Maybe a 2 seamer or cutter, anything to make it just a little bit better. Or even just spotting the fastball slightly off the plate. Only problem with that is with that approach is that he'd never end up throwing a strike, and I think MLB hitters would catch on.

Carlos Gomez of the Hardball Times thinks he has one of the best changeups in all of baseball (http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/mechanics/discussion/edwar_ramirez_selling_the_changeup/), his strikeout rates are insane, he will be useful and possibly even great someday. Since the changeup is such a feel pitch he also needs steady work, which he didn't get under Torre. I still believe in Edwar, and having a swing and miss guy coming out of the pen like that could be invaluable.

It's true. I'm beginning to wonder if putting an Ortiz jersey in the cement didn't curse in reverse. Look at the slump Papi has been in all year.

Yea Yankees did it out of paranoia ill admit that. The notion that they didnt find something and pretended like they did is idiotic. It would have been better if they didnt find anything. It made the Yankees look stupid that it was actually found.

If anyone's been wondering how Shelly Duncan has been doing (http://riveraveblues.com/2008/04/14/scranton-does-its-best-charleston-impersonation-2559/#more-2559)

Shelley: 3 for 4, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB - hitting .500-.560-1.136-1.696 in 5 games since being sent down

My boy Betances has been doing well in Charleston as well (http://www.riverdogs.com/dogs/stats/index.html?autoload=teamstats_pitching&team_id=233)

2-0 15.1 IP 23 SO 11 H 10 BB 3 HR 3.50 ERA

Most of those walks (6) came in one outing where his mechanics went kablooey. The good thing is he corrected it and finished strong. Thats the type of pitcher he is, he's very tall and lanky and guys like that can get out of whack at times. Think early Randy Johnson. But unlike Randy at his age he's kept it together more often than not. He just turned 20 and is still a few years off, this season is just about him getting some innings under his belt.

A few interesting reads from a good site

The Deception of Scott Patterson (http://saberscouting.wordpress.com/2008/04/15/the-deception-of-scott-patterson/)

Breaks down his funky mechanics and delivery. He has only average to above average stuff, yet he does nothing but get guys out and hitters say he's very tough to pick up. The true "over the top" delivery is also rare and Mike Marshall swears that pitchers who use it have rubber arms and rarely get injured.

Phil Hughes’ Mechanics: What’s The Deal? (http://saberscouting.wordpress.com/2008/04/09/phil-hughes-mechanics-whats-the-deal/)

Sounds to me like he's trying too hard. I still think he needs another pitch.

Hawkins gives up #21 (http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080416&content_id=2533255&vkey=news_nyy&fext=.jsp&c_id=nyy)

ST. PETERSBURG -- Tired of receiving flak for wearing a number last used by Paul O'Neill, the Yankees' LaTroy Hawkins has decided to surrender his No. 21 before the club opens a two-game series against the Red Sox on Wednesday.
The right-hander declined comment after the Yankees' 5-3 victory over the Rays at Tropicana Field on Tuesday, but Yankees director of media relations Jason Zillo confirmed the change. Hawkins' decision was first reported by

Hawkins wore No. 22 with the Yankees during Spring Training, but switched to No. 21 when infielder Morgan Ensberg decided he no longer wanted to wear it. Ensberg was randomly assigned the number upon reporting to camp as a non-roster invitee and later revealed that he received numerous vulgar comments from Yankees fans during the Grapefruit League campaign.

Hawkins eagerly accepted No. 21 as a tribute to Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente but quickly learned that a pinstriped No. 21 has other meanings for Yankees fans. Unaware he was donning a number that had not been worn since O'Neill retired following the 2001 World Series, Hawkins was booed when introduced on Opening Day at Yankee Stadium. Fans chanted "Paul O'Neill" during one of his appearances in the Bronx.
According to CBSSports.com, Hawkins made the decision after discussions with Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and other Yankees veterans, who told Hawkins that the number is not worth the headache it's causing.

"I figure if it's important enough for Jeter and Mariano and some other veterans to ask me about it, it's not worth it to keep wearing the number," Hawkins told the Web site.

Hawkins will wear No. 22, last worn by Roger Clemens, when the Yankees take the field on Wednesday. He had said that he would be interested in wearing No. 42 on Tuesday as a tribute to Jackie Robinson, but declined to change his number for the game against the Rays. Hawkins, who is African-American, wore No. 42 last year for the Rockies, the lone player wearing that number for Colorado.

Gay, all around. The fans and him.

Seriously, I love Pauly, but when the hell did he become Mickey or Babe or Yogi? No one can''t wear 21? I guess its really the fact that awful Hawkins had it. If a Brackman r Bettencies or Austin Jackson wear it, the fans will take it better.

At least it didn't lead to anything bad.

And whats worse is this guy takes 45 extra seconds to make the hand motion so after to no-call i kept waiting for him to gesture strike 3. he's a decent ump though, my only grip with him is his delay on calls. he didnt give clay that outside pitch tonight, so at least he's consistent.

NY Yankees

Look at that linescore. There's about 5 final scores of reasonably well pitched games in there. 3-1, 1-0, 4-1, 6-4, 4-0. But those were just innings. I left in the 7th, it was past my bedtime and I'd already seen a weeks worth of baseball.

Got home to see Bruney, and shit was he dealing. I was very impressed when Girardi left him in during his last outing against Tampa after giving up two bombs. That's the kind of thing Torre used to do when he gave a shit about developing players he could rely on later. I like Bruney's new aggressiveness. I'd rather see him give up some HR's here and there than walk the ballpark like he used to. I think he's our 7th inning guy.

Ohlendorf wasn't awful either, he was just put in an lousy spot. Relievers are going to let up base hits and runs here and there. He just did it on a night when he came in with the bases loaded. He struck out the side though, and that shows what kind of stuff he has. 97 MPH plus a nasty slider. He's just still learning the ropes as a reliever.

Between Bruney, Ohlendorf and Joba the Yanks have some vicious arms coming out of the pen. Top it off with Mo and this is the best bullpen we've had in years. Look at last night's game, innings 6, 7, 8, 9 for the Red Sox were all zeros.

Yanks looking at Piazza? (http://gothambaseballmagazine.com/yankees/piazza-coming-to-the-bronx.html)

Up until the last few days, Yankees' GM Brian Cashman has often resisted the temptation of putting Mike Piazza in pinstripes. But with his current catching situation (and don't forget prospect Francisco Cervelli is still out with a broken wrist) and the very aggressive Reds trying to sign Piazza to a contract, Cashman and his advisors -- we're told by a team insider -- are meeting to discuss whether a Piazza move is the right way "to address the current situation."

Dusty Baker is telling friends that he's "confident" that Piazza will sign with the Reds because "Tommy (Lasorda) will want him to play for me". Though most of the people that are monitoring the Cincy backstop search say the Reds want a "throw and catch" guy, Baker is saying that he thinks "Piazza could hit 25 homers in the GAB.".

One NL scout we spoke to said that "Piazza's defense isn't what either team needs right now, but (he) does know how to call a game and both teams seem to feel that he would be a good influence on their young pitchers."

An AL scout, who followed Piazza closely last season for his club said that "any team that adds Piazza will be getting a player who is obsessed with winning a World Series."

Righty off the bench with pop, could be a fit. But they have Duncan for that and he has been destroying AAA. Piazza's better off in the AL than the NL these days but I still doubt he'll end up here. That's crazy money for a 3rd string catcher.
