Great title right?
Ok, my team and I were sitting in the car, waiting for shit to happen, and one guy asks,
"In the history of mankind, has anyone ever thrown up from smelling their own farts (or feces)?"
My initial reaction was of course! When dealing with absolutes, I always go for the chance that there is an exception, so I said, and still say, YES. Although the cases would be few, There mustve been someone who, as a result of their own smell being so disgusting/disturbing, it caused them to vomit.
Everyone else in the car said NO. They believe that although people may have thrown up from OTHERS stench, everyone can handle whatever their own body can throw at them. Kindof along the lines of how you dont always smell your farts when others do I guess.
So, I bring it to you, my esteemed brethren in the health n fitness forum... what say you? Is it possible? Is it medically impossible? Do you know someone who has been so affected? I wouldve done this as a poll, but couldnt figure it out.
Keep in mind, the sole cause of the vomiting must be the scent; no mitigating factors, such as the flu, drinking, hangovers, etc...
Obviously, Id appreciate being proven right, but basically I just wanted to bring this disgusting question to a larger discussion group. Thanx.

I say yes. When sick w/ stomach flu I have come close to vomiting from the smell of my own foul sick crap. To the point of retching and nothing coming out.

go on a high protein diet. when its 85 outside, lock your car doors, turn up the heat, and let em rip.
you tell me then if you dont get the dry heaves.

I'd say yes, but the person would probably have to have a really sensative stomach.

I'd say it is nearly impossible for the scenario to be possible with this clause being true. My reasons are twofold:
1) If you are suffering from some sort of ailment, you are already disgusted, already in pain and already nauseas-- all a great combo for vomit
2) If you are sick you have a good chance of your farts smelling bad.
Otherwise, a healthy person would not have an awful enough smelling fart (#2) to make them self sick enough feeling (#1) to vomit from the smell.

Well, to clarify then...
You are not already sick enough where vomiting is already a probable symptom.

I've never made myself puke or dry-heave, I've come close, but no.
I am proud to say that I have made other poor souls dry-heave or puke.
Am I really proud?
Yes, I'm very proud of my farts and I always fess up to them.

I agree that it would probably have to be someone else's fart, not your own. I always seem to be far better at handling the nastiness of my own body as opposed to someone else's.

I would say yes, my friend's brother used to puke into the sink while he was taking a shit. I'm not sure if he was sick or not, but it wasn't just a one time thing, so I assume he wasn't sick and the puke was a direct result of his own shit stink.

My cat pooped on my bath towel this morning and I was gagging the whole time trying to flick it into the toilet. His faeces is the WORST!!! Totally ruined my morning shower experience.

I guess it would have happened at some point before the advent of modern plumbing. Think of how much worse human feces reeks when it is sitting open in the air instead of submerged in water.
I'm with you, Chris: I'd guess that at some point, when a human was exposed to his/her own non-submerged feces in a closed environment with limited ventilation, puking has occured. or, it happened on Jackass 2.

????????????
OK many things interest me and I study them, and some thingI've learned coz I had to teach them.
Whether flatus can induce vomitus, death, or simple aphasia is not something I have felt a strong need to research. Neither have I been asked to teach the subject.

You don't need to research beyond Mythbusters ... they did several episodes exploring flatus. (http://www.google.com/search?q=mythbusters+%2B+flatus&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a) (Link is the search results of a Google search using "mythbusters + flatus" as the search term.)
In one, they built a small room to test whether excessive flatus while sleeping would kill someone, as was told in an "urban legend." (It won't.)
In another, they tested whether certain foods (soda, beans, meat, etc.) would make your flatus stink worse. (That was an episode that I laughed through, actually. Meat and beans cause sulfrous compounds to form; it's pretty gross.)
They've also tested whether or not you could set flatus on fire. (I've forgotten what happened, but I knew a guy in high school who claimed he'd done it.)
