Error message 50?

A friend of mine is having problems on her comp. She uses dial-up. She has to restart her computer every time she wants to log onto the internet. Even when she does get on, most of her programs such as AIM, AOL Explorer, Windows Messenger, etc come back with unresponsive messages.

I think she said she can use her kid's user name, but not her own. I've searched "error message 50" and most of it has to do with Ipods. BTW... Her son did recently install an Ipod. Anyone have any ideas of what the problem is? I haven't used dial up in ages, so I'm out of practice, and I've never had a computer with more than one user.

well, if other users work, it is probably some user-specific registry to library files. You could just make a new user and move over documents. Toss the old user.
I had a customer who had Geek Squad come by and fix a few spyware problems only to cause a similar problems. Unfortunately, none of the users could get on to most sites and AIM was useless. I had to reinstall the entire OS. For the better anyway, though. Improved performance and got rid of all that GS garbage.
