we took our son to get the dtap and hib vaccines this morning. he has developed pretty bad swelling of his leg where he was vaccinated and has been crying like never before for the past 2 hours (they say to wait 3 hours before it's a problem). i have a call in with the pediatrician and we will probably be bringing him back in, but i was just wondering if anyone had any similar experiences and what they did with this?

My kids had a little swelling, but nothing that would make them cry like that or for that long.

Would you know if the little guy is allergic to anything?
Swelling can sometimes indicate an allergy to one of the components in the vaccine.
(So can a rash; he hasn't got one of those, too, right? Pood kid.)

no known allergies. doctor said to give him infant's tylenol and ice pack it and if there's no change by tomorrow to bring him back.

How did you make out with your son? Everything O.K.?
I hate bringing my twins for shots, it is always a nightmare.

It happens. Give him the Tylenol and wait a few more hours. If it doesn't improve bring him in. Also, take his temperature. If it is too high he is having a reaction.

gave him tylenol and rocked him to sleep (kept that up for a few hours) and he was another creature when he woke up. just the two hours of solid cries of terror/pain were almost unbearable. he'd never cried like that for a second before. very heart wrenching.
all is well.

good news:clap:
My kids never had any problems with vaccinations- my son never cried, but looked at the nurse with a "I'm gonna cut you , bitch" look in his eye.

For the next shots you should give you kid the Tylenol a little before getting the shots or at least at the time the shots are given. Alot of pediatricians tell there parents to give the tylenol before coming in, or just give it at the office.
Don't let this reaction scare you away from the vaccines. Epiglottits from Hib would make this episode look like a walk in the park.

It could be some sort of allergic reaction to the vector used to culture the vaccine. the Flu vaccine is grown in chicken eggs, so if someone is allergic to eggs they will have a reaction when they get the vaccine
