first group i have my earliest memories of in the way early 80's would be culture club. kissing to be clever came out when i was about 4 years old, & then colour by numbers a year later. they really are the earliest memories i have of music.
if you're talking about the high school years, then for me it was all about the beastie boys & nin. nothing else.

When I was real young I listened to a lot what my parents lsitened too. Which meant, The Eagles, Cream, Peter Paul and Mary, The Beach Boys, Led Zep...
When I was able to formulate my own musical opinions it would have to be:
MxPx
Weezer
Rancid
The Clash

I forgot how I was in love with 'Monster' when REM put it out. So there's another one.
But all the bands I listed before are still being played regulary in my stereo. And Weezer (blue album) is still my number one favorite album ever followed closely by 'London Calling'.
It's odd how much I listen to the blue album when I'm experiencing something new in my life. Every first day of the school year I would fll asleep listening to that cd. When I had my first plane ride I was lsitening to it.
And another album that had a huge impact on me was Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros 'Global aGo-Go'. That's all I listened to when I was in the hospital when I was 13 when I had my first symptoms of MS. 'Johnny Applessed' is such an amazing song because it builds and it still calms. That whole album is great. Everything they put out was great.

When I was little (before pre-teen) I used to drive down to NC with my family to visit mu uncle, aunt and cousins. We drove for hours in a car with an 8-track tape. We had three tapes we listened to.
The best of Bread.
Meat Loaf- Bat out of hell
Billy Joel- The Stranger.
The one that reminds me of those trips was, shockingly...The Best of Bread.
Then, on Xmas of 1982. That all changed when I got my first stero set. It came with two albums that changed my life and childhood forever.
It was...http://www.vinylzart.com/images/AlbumCovers-ACDC-ForThose-About-To-Rock-(1981).jpg
and....
http://scienceblogs.com/worldsfair/upload/2007/08/Ghost_In_The_Machine_cover.jpg
a few months later I saw my first ever concert. It was the Police at the then Brendon Byrne Arena. (now....ich.....Izod center)
Amazing.
And both, conincidentally, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the same year.
And that honor was soiled the second that cum guzzling whore Madonna was inducted. But I digress.
I still have both albums on LP. (Some other classics like Queen: news of the world, The Game. Billy Joel: Glass Houses, The Police, every album, The Beatles: White Album)
as soon as college hit....it all changed again when my buddie told me to 'listen to this guy...he's brilliant'.
he turned on:http://nothing.nin.net/gif/halo2.gif
and I was hooked.
Shortly there-after I was no longer a 'youth'.

<img src="http://www.spirit-of-metal.com/les%20goupes/B/Bon%20Jovi/Slippery%20When%20Wet/Slippery%20When%20Wet.jpg">
Which is a little shocking to me because I am an enormous Def Leppard fan. Mostly closeted, now, of course!
However, my music-listening life changed with this....

My brother had a hat trick of albums that were a pretty kick ass intro to album rock, imho
Chuck Berry: Best Of [do nest ofs qualify/]
The Who [just the words...]: Tommy
Alice Cooper: Billion Dollar Babies
So it was hello hooray reeling and rockin and fiddling about for me. Good times.

First song I heard was "Don't Stand so Close to Me."
The first rock album I bought ever was:
http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o217/themarshal/GhostintheMachine.jpg
Even though that track is on "Zenyatta Mondatta." I got that second. It's amazing too.
When I got my first CD player (600 dollars back then!) "Ghost in the Machine" was also my very first CD purchase as well.
I used to listen to it over and over again all night. Could not get enough of it, and when "Synchronicity" was released, I just would listen to both from start to finish, just amazed.

Quadrophenia was one of the first "non Beatles" albums I ever had as a kid. One Christmas, my brother got me that, Get Yer Ya Ya's out, Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush Live, and another album that escapes my memory. Those four albums were the jumping point to my becoming a more "enlightened" kid.

I didnt get into music into about 8th grade and all I can think of is Bush, Soundgarden, Red Hot Chili Peppers, 311, and stuff like that.
Then in 9th grade I started getting into metal and stopped listening to half that stuff and replaced all those bands above with White Zombie, Pantera, Machine Head, Fear Factory, and stuff like that.
