It's an old scam, but when Mom brought out a "collectable" plate I mail-ordered with a cubic zarconia gem and a wizard, I almost fell over laughing. "Thanks for nothing" Parade section of the Sunday paper, and "way to hang on to stuff" Mom.

My wife's aunt has a house full of that crap, floor to ceiling. The creepiest thing is the Princess Diana tribute doll, about 2 feet tall with those dead smile eyes, that she insists is going to be "worth something". I don't know about that, but I won't be surprised if it comes to life one night, "Trilogy of Terror" style, and kills everyone in the house.
It's like I married Marilyn Munster.

My first mail-order lesson...out of a comic book...these came in a 4X2" box and were made of hard plastic so thin that they were almost two dimensional. (I can still feel my disappointment):

I ordered a Batman & Robin patch from the back of a comic book when I was about 6 years old.
The patch wasn't horrible, but WTF was up with 6-8 WEEKS for delivery?!?!?! For a kid that is an eternity.
And it's not like they were hand-stitching the damn patch - it was a mass produced POS.

I ordered a cheap plastic submarine and something else not important enough to spark my memory from the adveritising section of Boy's Life. I remember by the time it came I forgot I had even ordered it.

I order nothing I see on television.
There's nothing that interests me or that is foolish enough to make me giggle at my silly purchase every time I see it.

That pasteboard footlocker was quite a disappointment.
