I never used this before, but figured I will try it this year, as my accountant keeps raising his rates.
I usually have to pay federal but get money back from state.
Is it hard to do a joint return?
Is it 'stupid simple' easy? I really hope so! I am really bad at math!
I was thinking of sharing it with my friend too and we would split the cost.
Can two different people use it?
Anyone have any horror stories? Audits?
This is the one I was thinking of getting...

I'm sure your taxes are more difficult than mine, but I've used the free version for three years in a row. It's easy as shit. My father has been using it for many years religiously, and he has a pretty damn complicated portfolio.

I've been using turbo tax on line (http://turbotax.intuit.com/) for the past eight years. It's incredibly simple to use. Also, if you use the on line version, you can start out with the most basic version, and then upgrade to a more sophisticated version on the fly if your tax return is too complicated. Another advantage of the on line version is that you don't have to pay turbo tax until you get all the way to the end and you are actually ready to e-file or print out your return.

Where is the online version? Anyone have a link? Is it secure? I do not necessarily want to efile, as I want to just print and mail it in with my payment.
Edit: I am a dope, I did not see the link! Drrrrr!

Easy as pie. I've used the onlone version as well, for about three years. I already received both my state and federal returns this year.

I have used freetaxUSA.com for several years now... it's easy for joint or single returns, if you own a house or have medical and work related deductions, it really walks you through step by step. It's nearly impossible to do it wrong.
oh- and I e-file and get my direct deposit nearly 2 weeks after.

I did mine through the IRS web site.
It was free and I had my return within 10 days.

I find it funnier when it's spelled with an I...

we did turbotax for the first time this year.
even with child/job change/ etc, it was pretty mindless to do.
took about 2.5 hours, though.
they ask you shitloads of questions, but in commonfolk talk- not that fancy-pants language that only mikeyboy understands.
we go both our refunds in about 14 days.

the site I used does the same, walk you through by asking questions. It did not take that long though.
You can do both, federal and state there.
Federal e-filing they do for free, if you want to add the state they charge you 10 bucks. They also offer for an additional fee bound copies of the return, which I think is silly if you have a printer. I just save mine in PDF format.
If you want to do the free e-file for the state you can always take your numbers from the state forms from this online program and transfer them and file it directly on the state website.
Ad it's great to get your refund direct deposited. Also you can go on the IRS website and track your status of your refund and when you will receive it. You just need the amount of your refund and your social # and they give you an exact date when you should have your money deposited by.

UUUGHHH!!
I need help! Please, someone give me an idea. I am doing my taxes and on my W2 I have two dependents. I am filing married filing jointly. For some freaking reason, I will not allow me to declare myself or my wife as dependents! Why??? I need to, and the program keeps asking for the SS# of my dependents and their relation to me. I see no option for "spouse" or "self" and unless I can declare 2, I will get totally fucked on my taxes. The guy that did my taxes last year had "2" dependents listed, but with no information as to who they are. Has something changed that will not allow this this year? I tried submitting it anyway and just got an email that saying I cant...
I am not trying to cheat, I am trying to declare on my taxes what I declare at work! Anyone know a way around them asking specifically who my dependents are?

I think Im gonna get audited unless I figure this out quick folks! Can anyone help me?
I kind of forced the tax software to accept myself and my wife as dependents. I need to know really quick, do these programs automatically count you and your wife as a dependent?
The reason I assume not was because when I was doing my review, it listed zero as dependents.
Please, try and get me an answer soon. I cannot find any help online..
Thanks

It assumes you an your spouse can claim yourselves as dependents unless you tell it otherwise. There should be a question at some point where they ask you if anyone else can claim you as a dependent. As long as you answer "no", you're cool.

I had tried that initially and it went though okay, but as I neared the end and did the review, I saw in dependents, it had zero. Then, I noticed I had to pay like $2000 to the federal!
I looked at last years taxes and saw that in the dependents area, he had 2 down, but there was nothing filled in as far as names was concerned. I need to somehow get "2" in there, because my income has not changed since last year and I only had to pay like $150 last year.

In the beginning, did you check off "married" or "single" ... that should give you all the deductions and appropriate questions you need.
(I've been using TurboTax for years with no problems ... except that it crashed my video card this year.)
If you bought the box, I thought that it had a customer service line.
If you're doing yours online, I don't know what to tell you.

It asked me that, but I put married, filing jointly. Thats how the guy did it last year.
It does not make sense! I am looking at the tax forms from last year and it says dependents; 2
I had to pay like $150 last year.
It said with two dependents as I tried to force it this year that I would have to pay $150 as well.
Do you think that the tax preparer uses some kind of way around where it verifies who the dependents are? Could something have changed since last year?
Now, I just tried taking myself and my wife out as dependents, I made sure it did not say anyone else could declare me as a dependent, and it is saying I owe like $2000!!
If I had to pay this, I would be bankrupt and out on the street!!!!
I am tempted to try and bring it to that guy that did it last year. But I really wanted to save the money and do it myself.
