what are they?
I have been using the steamer bags of frozen veggies for about a year now and they are great.

I bought some thinking they'd be great but I only used a few and decided it was easier to steam vegetables in a pot with a little water. In the pot I can test the doneness while they cook and can't with the microwave. Plus the vegetables do seem a little more rubbery done in the microwave.

I've only ever steamed vegetables in a pot or a rice cooker. The rice cooker is the best because you throw the rice in, the water, put a tray on top with broccoli and carrots, and there's your starch and veggies. Simple.

I really like the premade ones, that aren't zip and steam, they are steam in the bag from the frozen aisle.

I just saw some new microwave steam bags the other day, I think they were Birdseye brand. You don't vent them, you just throw them in sealed and they cook like that. That worries me, I don't want baby lima beans or sweat peas all over the inside of my microwave.

I have not tried the bags you're talking about yet Whistlepig. But I am always open to cooking suggestions.

my wife uses them all the time, with no problems.
quite yummy, actually.

although... im a lil bothered by the fact of microwaving plastic. some of the nasties in plastic must leech out into the food.

But im sure the FDA is right on top of it....

I won't use them for that reason. I've also stopped using plastic wrap in the microwave as well. It's not ver convenient, but the melted plastic thing worries me too much.

I wish we could wean ourselves from the idea that food needs to be quick and easy. Healthy and tasty food requires some effort (and art), and we seem to be losing that.

You can do salmon en papillote in the microwave with either the Zip'n'Steam bags (there's a recipe on the bag) or with parchment paper a la Alton Brown (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_24168,00.html) ... other than that, I've got a stack of them waiting to be used. (They were on sale at Target last month or the month before...)

Just because it's fast doesn't mean it can't be good for you.

(And getting things faster can help them fit into a busy lifestyle!)
