Somewhere in Washington they had to shut down political offices because of hunting week to control the population of deer. They shut down the office because of all of the senators who wanted to hunt.

You're kidding me.
I find that more offensive than when those cowards ran like little girls at the possibility of anthrax in their mail. At least that was a credible threat to their life.
This is just cause they want a vacation.

what are you talking about se7en, more deer die due to getting hit by a car, starvation, or disease than would be if hunted.

Nellie, your post about more deer dying of disease and starvation than would be killed by hunters seems to imply that hunters are doing deer a favor by killing them. That's peculiar, since dying of starvation or disease is not the fate of every deer that isn't shot by a hunter. If we were to accept that logic, couldn't someone then argue that all hunters be shot on site, since we would really be saving them from dying of a heart attack or cancer?

if ther was no hunting allowed, the population of deer would became overwelming. it would have an effect on the ecosystem, and there would not be enough food for all of them. more people would hit them while driving and the number of cases of limes disease would drastically increase. so when i say it's better to hunt, i'm thinking of what would happen if hunting was banned.

Nellie, the reality is that overpopulation is beneficial to the hunting industry as a tool for putting forth their propoganda. It allows them to
tout hunting as a viable means of population control. IF HUNTERS ARE TRULY CONCERNED ABOUT A PROBLEM, THE SIMPLEST SOLUTION IS NOT TO CREATE IT IN THE FIRST PLACE. Hunting is not the cure but the cause of overpopulation and starvation. It has long been proposed to state wildlife agencies that if they are serious about using hunting as a population control tool in areas where the sex ratio is already badly distorted, they should institute a doe season (taking no bucks but only does until the ratio is again stabilized at 50:50). The agencies have consistantly rejected that proposal. Completely giving up any pretense of ecologically motivated sound wildlife management. The New Jersey Division of Fish,Game and Wildlife stated that "the deer resource has been managed primarily for the purpose of sport hunting," (New Jersey Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife, An Assessment of Deer Hunting in New Jersey, 1990). The argument that without hunters, animals would overpopulate their habitats is ludicrous. Such nonsense begs the question; "What did all these animals do before hunters kept them in check?" Wildlife does not need humans to survive. That is abundanty clear. Therefore the myth had to be invented to justify the argument that humans must maintain "control" over nature.
