No this thread is no joke, I just heard from a co-worker that someone on a bike planted a bomb in the early AM in Times Square and I ran to CNN.com.

Here is the link, it still is not known if this is an act of a terrorist or just some nut who has something against the military. This is insane. (http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/03/06/times.square/index.html)

The blast, around 3:45 a.m., caused no injuries, officials said.

WHO THE FUCK WOULD BE AT A MILITARY RECRUITING FACILITY AT THAT TIME

This was just nonsense to get attention i think

It was basically black powder in a can that blew up the window of a building at a military (I believe recruiting) office. Media is blowing things up (no pun) again because something happened around a gov't office.

There is still a lot of news coverage out there right now.

I think it is some sort of military protest. Yea good..protest a war by blowing shit up...ass. And the news always over plays it. Actually stop calling it news..it's that tv show with anchors.

The world is a weird fucked up place. It is going to be one hell of a downward ride...

I dunno Snoogs....with it being Times Square there is always someone walking around at any hour. And at 4am-ish the odds it being a cop is alot higher then a civilian.

I think that the fact that is simply HAPPENED is the scary part. Whose to say that the next time this will not happen at an early hour but in the middle of rush hour.

This guy/these guys are dangerous. Most people who want attention like that just send letters or make threats through the media or internet. This was something that was carried out. IMHO

 Sorry WJ, I don't listen to to the news when I wake up or when I'm in the car, I just turn on my Zune. I heard my co-worker talking about it, checked CNN then checked the board. I am a little surprised this was not posted in the Current events thread.

But as Futherman said, it's apparently all over the todays listening thread.

I'm surprised I haven't heard more about this, just a small mention on the radio this morning. It's a pretty balsy thing to do in the middle of time square...

im reading this as protest. 4am on a wed nite sounds like minimal chance of hurting passer-byers.

if it was terrorism, they would have pulled this on a fri or sat nite when TS is full of tourists.

somebody's got beef with the military. probably over that stupid puppy video.

Not to burst your bubble, dude, but this isn't just ANY "government office."

This is THE Army/Navy/Marines recruiting center in TIMES FUCKING SQUARE. It recruits something like 10,000 new servicepersons per year and has been in the area since the 1940's. It's kind of a landmark and it's kind of important.

This station is right near several nice hotels, the place where they set up the stage for the acts to perform on New Year's Eve and the ABC Studios, among other things.

Traffic was all kinds of FUBAR-ed this morning while the investigation was happening and they diverted the subways until the NYPD declared the area OK.

Let me put this in perspective, because, while I do appreciate the fact that it's not a huge explosion and doesn't necessarily merit an outpouring of media coverage on the scale of a September 11th or anything, this is kind of a big deal in a couple of respects.

Not only did this incident target THE top military recruiting station in the USA, but it is also located in Times Square.

Times Square isn't just a place where streets converge; it's also been nicknamed "the Crossroads of the World."

Add to this that there are still two huge fucking holes in the ground Downtown, and you get a media feeding frenzy.

Since it's a military recruitment station, it's now National news, but the media got their knickers in the same twist here when the steam pipe exploded over by Grand Central Terminal last July.

Media outlets are just that "media outlets" ... they don't report the news; they manufacture it. I agree with you 100% ... and that's why I only get my news from the radio and the internets, so I pre-screen any shit like this.

I wasn't trying to be mean, I was just a little put off by your attitude...but I realized you probably didn't know exactly how much of an issue it could have been if this had taken place with a bigger bomb at a different time of day.

You know, I was just there a couple of months ago, so I had a mental image of the area in my head as soon as I heard it on the radio, as part of the traffic report (closed streets & diverted subways going into the AM rush hour is NEVER fun) but it's hard for me to remember not everyone has a mental map of Midtown the way I do.

And there's no comparing Times Square to Indiana. Good, bad or indifferent, although, you probably have fewer pigeons.

jauble
03-06-2008, 11:43 AM
Fewer pigeons for sure but they are there. I really understand what you are saying about if it had been a bigger bomb as I have a bunch of military friends/pride for our nation and about the location in general. My post was more about the media then the event. The guy that did this should have a closed room tune up session with CSK and then do a bit of time.

This one seems domestic. The government better start taking care of the people who feel isolated and unheard. If the recent school shootings showed us anything, we should realize that America's kids have an anger in them that is foreign to most of us. A terrorist threat that comes from within is so much harder to defend against. If they don't find this kid there will be others trying it I fear.

'We Did It' letters eyed in NY bombing (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080307/ap_on_go_co/times_square_blast_letters_22)

The manila envelopes contained a photo of a man standing in front of the recruiting station before it was bombed. The photo was the kind commonly sent as a holiday greeting card, according to a Democratic aide who spoke on condition of anonymity because the matter is under investigation.
The message on the card: "Happy New Year, We Did It."
The envelope also contained a packet of approximately 10 sheets of paper that seemed to be a political manifesto railing against the Iraq war and a booklet. The aide didn't know what the booklet was. A second aide, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said similar letters arrived in as many as 10 offices.

And the steam pipe explosion certainly did do far more damage but that was an accident. This was on purpose.

I walk right by the recruiting station every morning. But I had forgotten it was a recruiting station because it is usually closed in the morning and it's more of a pigeon coop. Every morning there are a few hundred pigeons right at its front door.

I figured the bomber might be someone who really hates pigeons.
