View Full Version : A question about cats
Today i was sick and i was half asleep watching tv, so I dont know if i acutally heard this or dreamt it:
Is it true that cats can hear electricity flowing thru appliances that are plugged in but turned off?
If thats the case then cats are officially the coolest animals alive.

No, no, no. Squirells are rodents which means they are cats sworn enemies. Didn't you ever see Pixie & Dixie with Jinxie the cat? What about Tom & Jerry? Sheesh! Pay attention!

Gwen, it wouldn't surprise
me!! Thunderlips has told me
that our cats huddle around
the door and coo/meow when I
enter the building (and we're
on the third floor!). That's
how he knows I'm "home"
because within a minute I
enter the door! They know my
"smell" apparently b/c they
don't do this with anyone else
who enters the building
(according to 'Lips). So it
wouldn't surprise me if they
could hear electricity flow
through appliances that are
plugged in but turned off.
But that could just be a cough
syrup w/codeine induced dream
on my part!

I can't stand cats, but I love kittens (for about 5 minutes, then I'm bored)

i don't know if they can hear it, as much as feel it. i have seen cats bundled up next to appliances that are plugged in but not on.
i think they feel the heat from it and are attracted to that

Cats hear different frequencies than humans. Many animals do. Even among humans, young people hear lower frequencies better than older people.
Cat's ears are shaped in a way to gather in sound and focus it into the ear channel. They use the ability to hear quiet sounds to catch mice and such.
Some electrical devices have a little microswitch that turn eletricity on and off (like a neon sign or christmas lights). The sound is usually audible to animals and very young children, but is not audible to most adults.
Most modern appliances like your TV ALWAYS have electricity running through it, even when off. Cat's may be able to sense this small amount of electricity.
Some animals like dogs can detect the electricity in the air prior to and during a storm. It is this auditory distress that makes many dogs freak out and hide under the bed.
Sharks win hands down for being able to detect electricity. They can detect the tiny electrical current generated by every living animal!

Horde King-
That was a great answer. Thank you. Once again you've come thru with solid information. I think the shark stuff was the most interesting though.
At least im not crazy!

Not that I approve but I just found this on web...
Fried Cat
Ingredients
1 cat, 2 to 3 pounds
1/2 GI canteen cup flour
2 GI mess kit spoons paprika
1-1/2 GI mess kit spoons salt
1/4 GI mess kit spoon pepper
1 GI canteen cup shortening
Method
Cut cat in serving pieces. Blend flour, paprika, salt and pepper in a clean container. Shake 2 or 3 pieces of the cat at a time until well coated with flour. Save any left over flour for gravy. Heat shortening in a heavy pan. Place cat pieces in pan and brown slowly on all sides. Cover and cook slowly until cat is tender. Uncover about 15 minutes to crisp cat.
