Frequent Flyer Miles

Call me fancy, but we flew first class to Hawaii on our honeymoon and it was a glorious experience.

So much so that I'm now scheming and devising ways to do it again; this means exploiting as many frequent flyer miles as I possibly can.

In order to do this, it means taking advantage of as many promos, double miles, and other things as I possibly can.

My goal is 250,000 miles.

Am I crazy, or do other people do this too?

I have a United Airlines and flown three times in 8 years and have close to 100,000 miles.

Of course, I haven't cashed in any miles but it counts when you shop with a store that is attached to your program via a credit card.

I already did... I'm using Chase, so I got a checking account there + I'm going to get a credit card there.

That's 20K miles for the checking account + 20K miles for the credit card.

The big "get" I've found so far is that OnePass apparently has program with Realtors to give you 3000 miles for every 10K of your home's price at closing when you buy it. I have to look into it more to see how much more is attached to it, but that's VERY interesting.

There's also a separate deal where you get 1250 miles for every 10K you finance through Lending Tree.

And that's just for stuff I'm getting ANYWAY.

Another cool thing is that Best Buy and Circuit City offer big time miles, so you just buy at home and pick up at the store.

My wife and I got one of the frequent flyer credit cards when the kids where in day care and we were spending almost $1500 a month in day care expenses. We earned enough to fly all four of us to Switzerland though American made us go from New York to Dallas to Zurich even though they have a direct flight from JFK to Zurich.

We haven't used the miles in a while so now my wife is looking to use them this summer for a trip to Turkey.

By the way Matty, sign up for free e-mails from United. They offer a lot of specials and discount rates. I just got one the other day where I can earn 10,000 bonus miles if I book an overseas trip between 1 MAR and 31 MAY.

Thanks for the tip AJ - but as Continental's hub is out of EWR, I'm focusing mainly on generating CO miles. CO has the trip I want - EWR to HNL, direct.

See, the thing is to this crazy strategy is that I'm trying to generate these miles WITHOUT flying, and spending as little money out of pocket as possible. Since we're going to be buying a house, buying stuff for the house, and getting a mortgage, I'm trying to get miles in "non traditional ways".
